Travelling with your dog

At Christmas time, I'll be driving up north for about 8 hours with my dog "Roo" who is a Yellow Lab. Do dogs get car sick? If so how do I know that he is car sick (before he gets sick) and what can I do to prevent his car sickness? How often should I stop and let him out for a break? Should I give him snacks throughout the day?

Every dog can be different when traveling. I think that you could try to get your dog used to traveling by car. Then she how he gets of traveling by car for one hour. On your journey you should stop as often as is necessary for him to go to the toilet and to eat his dinner. He should have a food bowl, a water bowl and some doggy bags. I suggest you make a short stop every one and a half top two hours.
I have traveled with my miniature poodle dog. He is called Secret. He prefers to go by train than by car. He makes a noise a bit like a helicopter. I think he hated going on the ferry even more. I stopped every hour to let him have a rest. He was nervous about eating. Once we arrived he was fine again.
Good luck on your 8 hour journey with Roo. I suggest he wears a car safety harness and can see out so he won't get travel sick.

Yes dogs can get car sick. I have a walker hound that can not go more than a 1/2 mile in a car before you see her starting to get sick. She starts foaming at the mouth and dry heaving to start with. I would recommend that you put Roo in the car and take him for a small local ride before you try an 8 hour trip with him. If he does show signs of car sickness then there are thing that he can be given to help with that. My vet told me to give our hound Dramamine, the kind that humans take for motion sickness; but I would recommend you call your vet before doing so. As far as stopping if he is being quiet and riding fine I would not stop but once or twice as you would probably have to do for yourself anyway. As far as giving him snacks I would not do so. Eating may bring on motion sickness. Feed him well the night before and then feed him as soon as you get to your destination.
Good Luck and safe travels.

It all depends on the dog. I take it you don't take him car riding very often.
How old is he?
My dogs took to it very well. Only my first dog got car sick in may car once not to long after I got him. After that he went with me every where- And I do mean everywhere I went. Him and my other little one lived in my car, just about. For the trip I guess I would watch how he is behaving. If he's resting comfortably- I'd say you would only need to let him out a few times. Try to offer him water at every stop.
Snacks are certainly good or one of those toys that you can hide snacks in so he doesn't get bored. Like a Kong with peanut butter in it - or if a rubber toy has a whole put little treats or kibble in it so he can try and work it out.
I probably wouldn't feed him too much before or after the trip in case he is the type to get sick.. * hours is not too long- make sure he eats well when you get to your destination.
ps. if he was going to get sick in the car. You would see him drooling alot and putting his head down and breathing a little abnormally before he starts his heaving.. you may have only a minute or so to stop and get him out to "toss his cookies" so you might want to keep a leash on him or very handy to lead him out of the car. I don't know of anything to prevent doggie car sickness. not sure if there is a doggie dramamine. :)
Good luck!
