I have noticed that now-a-days people just don't offer up the respect that was once given to the elderly population. I know that some adults do bad things and they do NOT deserve respect..I am not talking about elderly who are corrupt or do evil things. I am talking about everyday, common respect for one's elders. What do you think? Do you respect your elders?

I have little to no patience with elderly people who refuse to change with the world around them. My own grandmother is one of them. I love her dearly and she was one person who I relied on to raise me when my parents went to jail and I was passed on to family. I respect her, yes, but I wont hesitate to argue when she talks about something like she knows what it is. I don't deal with elderly people much but I show them the respect that they deserve. Its only those that I know well that I will argue with and try to show them where they are wrong.

Uh..gee..The honest answer to your question is.. NO, I don't respect my elders!..Because I don't believe that 1. Anyone DESERVES respect and 2. Never for a categorical reason..
As for #1, to say that someone deserves means that someone has earned it and I don't believe that respect is something that is taken. It is something given..
and #2, the problems I see with defining people by categories is that by doing so it immediately sets up for conflict as in old/young, black/white, male/female, educated/uneducated, as so forth..
I prefer to think that in recognizing the individual, as opposed to the category, one then respects the uniqueness of the individual.
You state that..'..some adults do bad things and do NOT deserve respect..'..and why not? If we devalue an individual because of inappropriate actions the we're all screwed because we all do bad things..I'm not saying that we should condone inappropriate actions/activities but you don't throw the baby out with the bath water...Yourself, for instance..have you ever been shunned because of something you did wrong? Did the folks who shunned you focus only on that 'bad' thing and disregard all the positives of your life? If so, do you feel you were treated fairly?
Everyone has my respect, tho they don't always have my support for every silly thing they do..And, YES, they are two seperate values!..Each one has my respect in that I support them for the individual they are and for the individual that they may become, but I don't always support the path they use..
ENJOY!

Yes, i agree with you, some guys does funny things with elder, some of them feels proud to insult them. Their behavior shows their family background. But i am not from those guys who teases them. Because i belongs to well educated family. I always respect my seniors. I think we should respect them, they have more experience than us, when they turn into old, we should not take advantage from this weakness.
