Do you chat? Why is it that you chat? What is the best chat client in your view?

Hi,
Its my guess actually, that almost all members I've met so far are aware of the chat stuffs. I used to chat on heavy doses and suddenly found that it has turned into an addiction. What is it in chatting that makes it so popular?
I wrote an article once, giving in details all the chat clients (especially multiprotocol) that are available over internet for free. I will be obliged if members review this article and send me some feedback.
http://selflearners.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/free-yahoo-chat-clients-download/
I'd also like to know if someone think chatting is a complete wastage of time. And please specify, a few reasons for that. I would also ask members to list the best chat clients they have used so far. It would definitely help regular chatters to choose more wisely.
Take care... and God bless you all...

Hello :)
I used to chat often when I first had the internet, about 10 years ago now. These days, I still do so once in a great while...I don't think it a waste of time, but I no longer have as much time to do so. It is a good way to keep in touch with others or exchange information, and is much less costly than making a long distance phone call to do so.
My favorite instant messaging service is AOL and next would be Yahoo. The others I've used seem very slow and unreliable in comparison, including the one on Facebook.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for the response. I am too comfortable with only a few clients. Actually, I was writing a review on those free chat clients on my blog (have you read it?). That is why I had to download several clients and use them (pity me!). I still find yahoo adorable especially the latest version. Its nice to know that you chat on Yahoo. May be someday I will impress you enough to have me added in your friend list over there.LOL.
Take care.
God bless you

Hi, when I am working, I always keep my MSN open, even I don't chat with others, I will keep it open, actually I like chatting with friends online, after graduated, we live in different city, and we don't call each other a lot, we always choose to connect each other from the internet, and chatting online is a best way to keep the relationship between each other, so I like that.

Internet is not only the easiest but the cheapest way to communicate with people. This is the beauty of chat system. The most important and the cheapest is I think the international calls we make without practically paying the ISD bill.
Thanks for participating in this discussion

I got hooked on IRC chat when I first came on the internet about 14 years ago. It was the only thing I knew about the internet! I think it fills a need for some people for a time, but it's easy to become addicted to it.
mIRC was the greatest client back when I was chatting, but I don't know if it's even available any more.

Yes, I think I know exactly what you are talking about. I've been addicted to chatting for a long time too. It may be because I had a bitter break up that time, and I was seeking comfort in lots of things. But to be perfectly honest, Chatting wasn't among the things that helped me get through.
Thanks for the sincere response. I really appreciate it.
Take care

okay i can't provide you with the best chat client i ever used cause i only use msn and yahoo's.
people like to chat cause we are created in that way which is to link / communicate / interact with others. we were given a mind to think of great ideas and solutions. once we have such ideas the next thing we normally would do is - share with others. there is so much joy when you share what you know with others.
i think people like to chat it becomes an addiction is that they enjoy chatting with people so much but they have to remember that they have things to be done

I completely agree with you. Just like we interact with our friends, make new friends, loose them, make new ones, the same thing happens in virtual world too. We share stuffs. And if you have a standard chat client and a high speed connection, you can share lots of other things too. Whenever I finish downloading a new music album, I first play it over internet to share it with friends. They also play stuffs for me. Just before this semester started, I had to stay online for the whole day. Lots of new ideas show up at those moments you know. lol...
Take care...

I chat in order to keep in touch with friends that are far away or just people I don't tend to see around in person. It can get addicting if you have a lot of friends that you want to talk to. I personally like to use AIM and SKYPE for chatting. AIM, because I'm most familiar with the client and because I've been using it ever since I was in elementary school. SKYPE because I can call my friends and talk to them through mics and webcam. Chatting is just more convenient sometimes that calling on the phone. Though calling on the phone is definitely popular, you can talk to a lot more people at once through chatting online.

Hi,
Dear I've used Skype too. I think its a wonderful thing. Just like other clients you have to have a skype account. Skype has an interface which I think is slightly unmanageable sometimes. You know, I used to switch from yahoo to skype when I was about having a voice chat. The sound quality is excellent in Skype. Thank you so much for the response.
Take care...
God bless you

hi getbiswaa... i just wanted to answer your posted questions. Yes i do chat. The reason i chat is to keep in touch with my family and friends. In the same manner i can also meet other people from the different parts of the world by sharing new ideas with them. the best client is those who use this as descent as they are and not for making fun out of other people.

Chatting cuts down on time. When you chat, more often then not its instant. Its like holding a conversation over the computer which it is. For me chatting is important because I can talk to my friends without worrying about running down the battery in my cell phone or disturbing either George, or their family members.
I however, stick mostly to instent messaging between myself and rarely go into a chat room. If I do, its because I have to talk to more than one person about the same subject and its faster then going back and forth between tabs.
I have gone between several chat clients over the years. The one I use the most often is AIM. I'll sometimes use windows live, but I like aim a lot better.
I like Aim because it works with my screan reader a lot better then other chat clients including Windows live. I used to use Windows live for the same reasons, but my scripts need some serious updating and I'm broke.

I too believe AIM is lot better than other clients and networks. Do you chat on Yahoo Messenger? If you have multiple accounts in several networks, you can consider trying some multiprotocol Chat Clients. They will let you log on to all your accounts at the same time. We chat because its free. I mean, telephone bills are going to be a huge burden if you want to contact all your friends frequently. If you have a broadband connection you can have voice chat for free. You only have to pay a fixed amount of money for your internet. Its easy.
