I am getting my tonsils out next week because I have been experiencing sore throats and swollen glands for over a year now and I do not know what to expect? Have you gotten your tonsils out? Did it hurt? Do you know someone who got them out? How long were they out for?
I am pretty nervous and I dont know what to expect?

Hi jota. I have sent you a friend request so you can add me to your friends.
I am a nurse and I can tell you not to worry about the tonsils. They are probably better out in your case, because we dont normally take tonsils out of people who have no real problems. You will be out for about an hour maximum. Your throat will be sore, but you will be given pain relief (they used to have some lovely chewing gum with Aspirin in at one time that was great for sore throats but not sure if they still use that now). Anyway, you will get pain relief and the pain will go quite quickly (about 12-24 hours). Eating will be a bit sore, but it is best if you can eat some rough things, like toast, to help clean the back of the throat. I had mine out a long time ago when I was a child and I was off-colour for about 24 hours and then I was fine. Hope all goes well. Contact me if you have more questions. Good luck

I had mine out when I was 6. I do remember it hurting when i woke up, but the nurse gave me ice cream and it felt good. I think i only missed a few days of school. It felt like I was sick with a cold. It didn't last long. Good luck, let me know how you feel after its done.

I know the older you get the worse it is.. Take your pain meds, eat lots of cold things you'll be fine

I had mine removed & I was pretty sore after the surgery. I was very tried b/c of the anistesia (sp?) and somehow I fell asleep on my back. I don't recommend this b/c the blood pooled at the back of my throat & I woke up choking & almost ripped my stiches.
One cool part was I had a black light, and when I had the black light on (& my room was otherwise completely dark) I could see where my tonsils were removed was glowing if I was looking in a mirror. I know, completely from left field, but it's true.

I had them out when I was 12. Try not to be scared. You will feel nothing. When you wake up, you will just have a sore throat, and each day it will get better. Hey, you get to eat lots of ice cream too. Good luck.

I know someone that had them taken out and you have nothing to worry about. We have outstanding technology and it will hurt a bit for a little while, just concentrate on all the ice cream you'll be eating!! :)

Well, since I have never had this operation, I think you should consult your doctor first.
