What is the best course in college?

How can a student really choose the right course for him/her? Do we need to follow the advice of our parents or do we just stick with our own decision? How do we know if such course will help advance our career? (It is suggested that deciding on what course to take up in college would be very decisive on what we will become in the future)

It really depends on your situation. In my case, because I wasn't really sure what to take as a course in college applications, I took out a list of courses and made a process of elimination for every course. For example, I didn't take engineering cause I didn't like math, I didn't take up teaching because I wasn't very fond of doing so, and ended up with the only course that remained: medicine, because I loved science. Of course, you should also consider future prospects in what course you're planning to take. Don't look at the trend of the day if you want to be very happy with your job in the long term, but rather, try looking for a course that would be sustainable in most economic situations.
As for parents, all you have to do is do your research on the course you want and convince them that you are responsible enough to make this decision and make a lucrative career out of your course. Usually parents would give consent if they see you are responsible enough, they just want to make sure that you'll get a good living when they're gone.

That is a good suggestion. To reconcile what our parents want and what we want, we must discover first our strengths and weaknesses. We should have a strong idea of what subjects we are good at. At least from this vantage point we could ask our parents that we can do it and responsible enough to finish such course.
Although, we cannot generalize this situation, because there are still some parents who thinks they know what is best for their children by insisting what they want. Still there is no harm in trying to convince them otherwise.
Thanks for the post

a geniusly advice!!! Everything boils down to our decision, at least in the end we cannot regret if our decision turned our to be not so good. Also, remembering our parents advice may also be decisive on the outcome of our future. thanx

The best course would be what a person thinks he/she could excel in. In my case, I excelled on English and Social Science subjects during my high school years, so my college and post-college courses are related with these fields. Although parents know what's best for us, it is only our own self who could determine what we want to study and to do for the rest of our life.

This is just a query, is there any way we could determine if we can excel in a certain field of study? or do we just need to follow through what our heart commands us?
Another point of mine is that, our parents were the ones who tuaght us and reared us most of our current life, shouldnt they be given at least the privilege to choose what is best for us as a sign of respect and appreciation for all the things they have done to us (the downfall is it might be contrary to what we desire or like).
