First real snow of the season! Six inches and counting!

We're getting the first really good snow of the season today. Well, actually, it's the first really good snow since we moved to the mountains about 2 1/2 years ago. There's about six inches out there right now and it's still snowing! I'll be out there very soon, throwing snowballs, making snow angels and maybe even building a snowman.
Have you had snow this year yet? Do you normally get snow? If you do, do you play in it? There's a saying that I hold near and dear to my heart: "You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing." I'll play as long as I can. How about you?
Here's my snow:

Hi there my dear friend. Looking at the picture made me remember how real snow looks like. We don't get to much snow in the winter nowadays at least not in the city i live in. I did see snow like that and more when i went last year at the mountains but that's about it.
Yes both me and my girlfriend love playing in and with the snow ;)

Hi elitess! With the crazy weather we've had all over the globe, it wouldn't surprise me if you see snow soon. We moved to the mountains because my husband loves snow even more than I do but this is our third winter here and this is the most snow we've seen so far. Global warming, HA!
Here's another photo I took. That's my husband's truck being buried in the snow.

A couple of days ago we got nearly a foot of snow and the other night before I went to be it began to snow again. So I cast a spell and sent it to you. Enjoy it! lol And yes, I still play in it, but it's more fun to share it!

So cute and you're welcome. Have the dogs got their winter coats yet? My Spunky hasn't got hers yet so I can't leave her out for long yet. She loves the snow though once she gets used to her feet being wet! LOL

Good heavens if I tried to put a coat and boots on Spunky she'd turn into an ankle biter. LOL She's rather big you know.
Your pups sound adorable and one day I'm going to convince my hubs to get me a smaller dog I can keep upstairs all the time and who will be company for Spunky too.

Oh! Thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH, Sparks! I'm loving it!!! We've had practically nothing but ice storms the past two winters here so I was very pleasantly surprised to see all this snow.
My dogs are loving it, too. As small as they are, they adore the snow. They went out on the deck and back in the house so many times, of course leaving little clumps of snow that had balled up in their hair all along the way, that I had to close the doggie door. Poor things, they're sulking now. LOL
Here they are enjoying the snow:

Hey MW! We are getting our first snow too! Yipee! But, it's a
very wet snow and is barely sticking! It is sticking just a
little on the cars and barely on the grass and pavement! But,
it was really coming down for a little while and it was so
beautiful! My neighbors have put up their Christmas lights
and it looked so like Christmas! We didn't get any accumulation,
but it was a start to the Winter finally! I know I will be sorry
I am saying this, since I can't take the very cold weather and
we haven't had any yet, but know now that it is coming! But, it
was so exciting to see our "first snow" coming down! It has
been extremely warm for NYS this time of year so now I think
we will finally get the weather that is meant for this time of year!

Hi Opal. It's been the same here in northern Virginia. Much warmer than usual. Our snow is very wet snow, although it did stick and accumulate. It has stopped now but I'd say we got around 7 or 8 inches, total. It's supposed to go up to 39 tomorrow so it'll probably all melt, especially if the sun comes out. I was very surprised to see this much snow so early in the season!
I was TOLD I'd have help putting up lights outside today but that didn't happen. I didn't really expect it to because it's Saturday and my husband considers Saturdays his day to sleep... all day. So, I didn't even bother with the lights today. It would have been nice, though.
Isn't it funny how we're so excited by the first snow but, by the end of the season we're screaming for summer?
Hmmm, I wonder if that means we have a memory like a fish. I've heard that they have only a 3-second memory which is why they don't get bored stiff swimming around in a fishtank. ("Oh, look at the pretty rock!" "Oh, look at the pretty rock!" "Oh, look at the pretty rock!") Maybe our memories are a year long. ("Oh, look at the pretty snow!")

I am not allergic to snow but snow is allergic to me!! I have travelled quite a bit where snow is a normal phenomena but whenever I visited that place it never snowed. Once I was in New Jersey and the next day I had to leave for Denver where I was told it was snowing almost one foot. I was excited that atlast I would get to play in snow but the day I arrived there it vanished. I hope one day I would get to see snow, real snow where I could just enjoy.

I might call you to come and visit me by the end of winter, then. I'll probably be pretty sick of the snow by then!
That's terrible! Denver almost always has snow! Par for the course, I suppose. When you really want something, invariably it won't happen. Isn't life grand?
Snow is great fun, as long as there isn't too much of it and as long as you're quite well bundled up! It's COLD!!! I can remember playing in the snow until I was literally turning blue. My mother grabbed me and yanked me all the way home. What a party pooper! (I was sick the next day so I guess my mother knew what she was doing.)
I have a photo somewhere around here of my oldest son when he was 18 months old. He got his first real taste of snow. He touched it, then looked at his hand with such disgust on his face! It was so funny! I'll have to find that photo and post it here.
I hope you do get to experience snow one day. As long as you're all bundled up and don't let that snow get down the back of your boots, it's such fun!

Now THAT is scary! It snowed in southernmost Texas and I've been told it's snowing in New Mexico right now! These are places that typically never see snow and here you are, way up near Vermont with no snow. Geez, snow is one of the things that makes it so beautiful in New England! I think we've been flipped upside down somehow. It looks like the farther south you are, the more snow you're getting, this year anyway.
I'm sure the snow machines could produce enough snow for the ski resorts but I'd say it's a safe bet that the cost of producing all the snow would be way too high considering the economy. I'm sure there won't be as many people skiing this year as there normally is. If I were a skier, I would not be going this year because we just couldn't afford it.
Well, I certainly hope you get more snow as the season progresses, espeonz. Oh, by the way, welcome to myLot!

Hi! Where do you live? America is it? I live in Carlisle, England and we do not get as much snow as we used to. London got some last winter and the way they were going on about in on the news (they got about 2 inches of the stuff) the place came to a standstill and loads of people took the Monday off work! Apparently, the buses didn't even run...they did in the Blitz!
There is a bit of a "north/south" divide when it comes to the weather. The Scots (about 9 miles over the border from us) laugh at how soft the "southerners" are which could be anyone south of Newcastle! The softest of them all are the Londoners, simply because they are not used to cold weather. We had floods in Carlisle in 2005 and recently nearby in Cockermouth and Workington and I dread to think how Londoners would cope if that Thames Barrier was breached....not very well I don't think.
Love London though, fabulous place.

Dog, are you one of those southern softies? Come on, fess up!
Hi Janey. Welcome to myLot! You'd be amazed at the softies we have right here, where it snows every year! The roads are all but deserted until the plows and/or salt trucks go by.
For me, a foot of snow would make me hesitate; more than that and I'd think seriously about staying in... as far as driving goes, anyway. I'd be out there playing, for sure!
I like the snow but not because I'm a hardened off northerner. Nope. It's because our freezing Winters make Spring even more awesome. There's nothing like seeing the new plants poking their heads out of the dirt, sometimes they poke through the snow if there's been a late snowfall. There's something about seeing this that touches and warms my heart.
Technically, I'm one of those southern softies. LOL I was born and raised in Maryland here in the US which, if you look at it on a map, appears to be a northern state but, in actuality, is considered a southern state. So....
Still, I love the snow. Okay, I love the snow WE get. I couldn't survive up in Canada with the snow they get. I doubt I'd be happy in the farthest northern states here in the US!
One of these days I'd love to visit England. My surname is English (Ward). I probably have relatives around there somewhere. Hey! A few decades ago, I had a very good friend who lived in London. John O'Toole. Okay, yes, he was Irish but living in London. I wonder if he's still there? Heck, I wonder if he's still alive! Of course, finding a "John O'Toole" there is probably equivalent to trying to find a "John Smith" here.

Hi Mentalward
You are so lucky, we rarely see Snow now when we do it is just a little bit , not enough for snowballs and all that I would love to see snow like that again it has been many years since we have had snow like that
You enjoy it Girl and have a snowball on me to

You got it, Gabs! I think my dogs loved it even more than I did. They were adorable, running all over the deck, almost inhaling the snow. They must have gone out there half a dozen times, coming inside long enough to warm up before heading out again.
This was the perfect snowball snow, too. Really wet. It'll probably be gone by tomorrow night, though. It was one degree above freezing today and is supposed to be six degrees warmer tomorrow, with the sun shining. So, I doubt this snow will stick around. But, with it being so early in the season, I'm hoping we'll get more like this.
We haven't had much snow here in the past few years, either. We got one snowstorm right before we moved here where 18 inches fell on my husband's birthday. He said he wanted snow for his birthday so I told him I had ordered it ahead of time. But, since then, we've only had about an inch or so at a time and, even then, not very often. We've had way more ice storms here than snow storms. I don't like ice at all.
With the weather being so very strange these days, you may see snow again, maybe even more than you'd like! It was snowing in southernmost Texas today, down at the very bottom of the U.S. and that has to be incredibly rare.
Here are my gals enjoying the snow:

Wouldn't we have fun!!! Unfortunately, right now, it's melting. There's still plenty of snow out there but it's very, very wet snow. A few minutes ago, I heard a very loud WHUMP right outside the window. The snow had slid off the roof. Glad I wasn't under it!
If this early snow is any indication, we should be getting a lot of snow this year. You're more than welcome to come play in it with me! My husband is such a party pooper he doesn't even like to shovel it off the sidewalk, which reminds me I have to go light a fire under his butt so he'll shovel the walk before it all freezes over tonight and turns to solid ice!

I don't know if you prefer the cold and the snow but, i think you're one of the fortunate ones, wow how is it living in the mountains? We never get snow where i live, but a couple of surrounding states got a little bit of snow. I see people in our area wearing heavy coats, i just wear my light jackets or my sweatshirts because i'm from the north and i'm use to it and am loving the cold wheather, i sure do miss the snow.

I'm not too fond of cold weather but it's okay when it snows. I love the snow! It's so beautiful and makes everything seem so clean and fresh right after it falls.
Living in the mountains is probably as nice as you think it is. I LOVE it here! Cleaner, quieter, less traffic, less crowds, less trash, fresh air, all that good stuff. We live about 10 miles outside of the nearest town, in the country surrounded by farms. We also live on a private lake. It couldn't get more peaceful. I've wanted a home like this almost my entire life and, although it took me 55 years to get here, it was worth the wait.
I wish I could send you some of this snow! I've missed it myself until today. We moved here because my husband loves snow more than I do and we thought, well, of course it snows in the mountains. But, until today, we've only had an inch or two of snow but we've also had plenty of ice storms. I thought we were doomed to a life of winter ice but it looks like there's hope that we'll get more snow now.

Ice scares everyone, I think. You simply cannot have control on ice, walking or driving. I remember, when I was MUCH younger, there were tires you could buy for your car with metal spikes on them. I believe they helped driving on ice but they were made illegal because they were tearing up the roads.
It usually only rains near the ocean. My husband grew up on Maryland's Eastern Shore. I think that's why he loves snow so much. He missed it. His family moved there from Baltimore when he was about 9 years old. It snowed a lot in Baltimore.
I like snow, just not a lot of it. I love it when it snows deep and covers everything. Well, almost everything. In 1979, we had 3 snowstorms in two weeks' time that put around 5 feet of snow on everything. The 4 foot fence around our yard disappeared. The cars were white humps in the vast whiteness. I had the job of shoveling the sidewalk. We lived in a corner house and I was shoveling out front and shoveled halfway out into the street before I realized the sidewalk wasn't there anymore! We were stuck in the house for four days until an ambulance with a plow on the front of it came down our street. At least we knew where the road was after that! LOL
Yeah, it can snow as much as it likes as long as it melts the next day.

Hahahahaha! You sound like my oldest son. We've always said he was born an old man. When he first touched snow, he was 18 months old. I'll never forget the look on his face right after he touched it. There was such disgust in that look! LOL
He hasn't gotten any better with age, either. He still hates the snow. Me? I just take what comes and try to enjoy it. We don't get really severe weather here so there's usually not much snow. I can't handle excessive rain. We had such a rainy Spring this year that my first veggie garden was totally destroyed. But, I had to think, "What if this was snow?" If it was snow, we probably wouldn't be able to find our cars or even our house! So, I was thankful it wasn't snow. (Gotta try to find the bright side, huh? LOL)
Now, I was planning on sending you ALL this snow but now that I know you don't want it, I'll just keep it here.

Hey Marti,
Well as far as I know, it's only snowed only 2x's here in Orlando. It melted alsmost as fast as it hit the ground but it was still exciting.
But when I lived in the Mountains of California, the snow would sometimes keep us in the house for days. I even drove one of those mini school buses up in the Mts.That was a little scary. I'd have to put chains on and off 2 or 3 times every morning and afternoon. We had some very scary roads in the Mts. But I have to say, I had the most exciting times of my life there.
Have fun in the snow sweetie. Wish I was there to make angels with you. Hugsss

That would be such fun, Leenie! You and me making snow angels! Of course, we'd have some big, strong men to hoist us back up out of the snow. LOL
I used to have a videoclip of me making a snow angel on one of my Geocities websites but they went belly up last October. I did copy all my photos and videos to my computer before they closed down, but lost them all when I got a trojan and a worm at the same time. Guess I'll have to get out there and make another instructional video of how to make a snow angel, huh?
I think I'll wait until we get some snow that isn't this wet, though. It was 33 degrees all day so the snow is very wet and tomorrow it's supposed to go up to 39 degrees so it will be melting. I don't mind being covered in snow but I hate being wet and cold at the same time!
Our mountains aren't nearly as tall or as trecherous as the Rockies! Compared to those, we have baby mountains. LOL Our elevation here is just under 1,000 feet above sea level. I've used chains before and hated it. That was when I had a tiny little car with no weight to it. My SUV, even though it's one of the smallest ones out there, has enough weight to keep me from sliding... on snow, anyway. Ice is a different story. There's no way I'll venture out when there's ice on the roads!
Back in '79, we had 3 snowstorms hit us in 2 weeks, leaving about 5 feet of snow on the ground. We were housebound for maybe 4 days before an ambulance with a plow came down the street we lived on, giving us a path to use. After that, the neighbors all got together and shoveled enough snow off the road so we could all get out. Hmmm, somewhere around this house I have photos of that snow. I'll try to find them.
I could handle having no snow. I'd miss it, I guess, but to live in a place where I could grow my tropical fruits would be absolute heaven to me!

I've wanted to visit the California coast for years now. One of these days I hope I do get to see it.
I've often thought of buying a home just east of the San Andreas Fault. Once the big earthquake hits and everything west of the fault line plunges into the water, I'd have waterfront property!

Marti,
When I lived in California, I lived in the Southern Sierra Mountains. At first I lived at an elevation of about 3000 and then moved higher to 7000. We got plenty of snow at the lower level and lots at the higher level. I loved the snow but hated to drive in it. I owned a VW Bug that would go just about anywhere with studded tires. I could plow through a burm of snow about 3 feet high. I love my yellow bug. Then I moved from the mountains to the ocean. I totally am in love with the California coast line. If you ever get the chance to go across country and sight seeing, take a drive along the California Coastline.

We here in Toronto (Canada) usually see our first snowfall in early November. However, according to the news report a few days ago...Toronto has since past it's old record. It was 137 years ago, that we didn't have ANY snow by this time in DECEMBER! Not that I'm complaining mind you. I like snow...just as long as it doesn't fall near or on me. Nope. I'm a "heat baby". Heck, I even hate having to sometimes poke around in the refrigerator freezer. Brrrrr!
But...you're statement about growing old vs playing, is absolutely correct.
I'm with you on that one.

You're a "heat baby" and live in Canada????
I prefer warm days myself. Winters, even here, last too long for my liking. I've thought about moving farther south but, this year, I'm glad I didn't. They got snow in southernmost Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico! Only about two inches but, still....
I don't usually mind poking around in the freezer but don't like walking through the frozen section of the grocery store, especially in the summer when I'm there in shorts and a thin cotton top. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
Hmmm, I'm curious about something. When winter hits up there, do you ever use outside as a freezer? I've done that here a few times. Well, not as a freezer but as a refrigerator, especially near the holidays when I have a ton of food around for when company comes by. As long as it stays below 40F, it's as good as a refrigerator; that is, as long as I can keep the wild critters from stealing what I put outside!
It has stopped snowing here but, today, the sun is shining brightly. That means SNOW BLINDNESS!! I hate it when it's so bright outside you can't see from the glare. It's still very pretty out there (still 3 degrees below freezing) but I can't look at it too long because it's so bright. It gives me a headache!

You are so kind..thank you for your warm wishes.
Eee-yuh, this dear old (er, young) boy logged in his 58th B-day, on November 26th.
I can hardly believe it myself. Seems like only yesterday I was 57. Hmmm...how time does fly.
Say, wha-d-ya mean, "heat baby", and you live in Canada???? I'll have you know, we here in Toronto usually have record breaking temperatures in summer. Temperatures that can reach well into the high 90's. I just love it, but many Torontonians get goofy. When it's 20 below zero, they scream for heat; can't wait for the summer months to arrive. Similarly, when it's 98F degrees, they cry for winter. Nutso!
I say; "Bring on the heat baby, all year round!" My problem is that I was born in the wrong place....should have been more like Hawaii or Florida. Oh well.
No; can't say I've ever used the winter outdoors as a refrigerator. Around here, we have too many critters as well, such as foxes, raccoons, and coyotes. Yup, you read that correctly. But from what I hear, they still prefer McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's. Still I 'spose, it might be a good idea to bury a frozen pizza in the snow once in a while; or something else sealed like that, would probably be O.K. All I'd have to do then is wait for that summer heat, and presto...instant bar-b-qued pizza!
Great idea Marti!

Now that's weird! You're living on the western side of the mountains. Most of the worst weather gets stopped from reaching us from the taller mountains to our west. We're in the mountains, but on the eastern side. Of course, you are more southern than we are here. Still, 2 to 3 inches isn't bad for this time of year. I didn't expect any snow at all until at least the end of December! February is usually when we get the most of our snow. January usually brings ice.
We got about 7 or 8 inches, total. It's very wet snow, though. Great snowball snow but I worry about what's on the trees because it's this heavy snow that brings down the branches. We have a LOT of trees around here!
Yeah, I'd say it's high time you made another snow angel! As long as I can get down in it and have someone nearby to pull me back up, I'll be making snow angels. LOL I hope you get more snow soon!

But since I grew up in IL even though I enjoy the site of Snow last yr. was definately enough to last a couple of yrs. for me as well.

Snow is beautiful but it sure can be a pain, especially for those who must go out to work or shopping. As long as I can stay home, I'll enjoy every single flake that falls. I love watching it fall because it's so peaceful and calming. It always seems so quiet when it's snowing and the air is so fresh.
But, after the first day it's just a nuisance, except for kids. Well, except for kids and my dogs. LOL They ADORE the snow! They were in and out of it all day today... oops, I mean yesterday. (I just noticed it's 12:34 a.m. Guess I should get to bed! LOL)
I hope you don't see much snow. I know that rain is much more common in Seattle than snow but the weather has been so crazy all over the world recently, you just never know. But, whatever you get, stay safe!

We had our first snow in the middle of November and it was very cold during that time. Now it is not so cold as it was as we are having fine weather most of the days.
Yeah, when it snowed, I saw a lot of children playing with the snow, making snowmen and having snow fight. But I don't play with it. I only love to see it. Maybe it is because I don't have the mood to play with it like the time when I was young.

It's only just gone over the freezing point here but the sun has been out all morning so it's melting here already. It should go up to the mid-30's so I don't expect much of it to be around tonight. I just hope it doesn't make the roads and sidewalks all wet today, then have it all freeze tonight (the low is supposed to be around 27) making traveling trecherous. Actually, this is when the tree branches start breaking off and we have a LOT of trees around here!
We've had winters where we've had snow almost constantly but we've also had winters with barely any snow at all. Last year, we got a lot of ice storms. I'd much rather have constant snow than even one ice storm. If this snow is any indication of what's to come, since it came so early in the season, I'm afraid we're going to get a lot of snow this year!

Nope! No snow here! We are in Perth Western Australia and we are on the coast so it never snows here which is a darn shame. We are in summer at the moment and it is a rather hot day today so the thought of snow is hard to fathom. When I lived in Italy we were also on the coast but we occasionally got snow and of course everybody would run outside and we had a ball doing the usual snow ball fights, built snowmen and went sleight riding. We could never ski where we were because it didn’t snow enough, we had to go over the border for that at holiday time.

I'm glad you liked that quote, paula. It makes you think, huh? I guess I'll never grow old. I like to play too much. LOL
I like living here because we get a bit of all kinds of weather, including an occasional hurricane. Well, usually just the outer part of a hurricane since we're about 120 miles from the coastline, but enough to know it's a hurricane. Still, we don't get so much of anything that it gets old.
I like the different seasons. I could handle living in a climate that was warm year-round, though. Gardening is my passion and I always get sad when I have to put my gardening equipment away for the winter. But, once Spring rolls around, I'm as giddy as a kid on Christmas morning, thinking about and planning my garden. I'd probably miss that excitement if it was always warm. Well, plus I'd miss snow.
As for skiing, I've never tried it. I've always been kind of clutzy so I thought it best not to chance breaking a leg or even worse on a ski slope.

Hi smartjack. (Did you choose the "jack" part of your name in place of that other word that is usually associated with a donkey? If so, I LOVE it! LOL)
Snow is cold. Very cold. It's also very slippery so driving or walking on it must be done with caution. But, it really is a lot of fun. We've had snow just about every year since I was born. I guess I really am lucky to have been born where I was because we get a little bit of everything. It usually snows enough to have fun in but not so much that we get sick of seeing it. Some years, we've had too much snow, though. One year, way back in 1979, we had three snowstorms hit us in a two-week period, dumping about five feet of snow on us. I'm going to find some photos I have of that snow and post them here because it really was unbelievable. It also was NOT fun at all because I got the job of shoveling the snow off the sidewalk.
I hope you get to witness snow at least one time in your life, smartjack. It is something that everyone should see at least once.
Oh, you know, there is now something called "canned snow", a fake snow that you add water to, making it expand quite a lot and, apparently, it acts just like real snow and lasts about four weeks, or so they claim. I've never bought any but did think about it since my husband LOVES snow and we have not had much in the past few years.

Hi hairyplums. Quite an unusual name you have there! Is there a story behind it? I'd LOVE to hear it! Welcome to myLot!
I remember it snowing only once on Christmas Eve. I was a teenager and my boyfriend and my sister's boyfriend were both at our house. They got snowbound and spent the night, under my mother's watchful eye, of course. LOL It snowed about two feet that day. Well, that day and into Christmas morning. It was so awesome!
Sadly, I can't remember another snowy Christmas. As a matter of fact, one year on Christmas day, I had the doors and windows open because it got so hot in the house from cooking all morning, especially with it being 70 deg. outside! I couldn't believe how warm it was for late December. But, that, also was quite awhile ago. It's been pretty normal, temperature-wise, for the past couple of decades.
I'd love to see it snow again on Christmas Eve, though. With this snow so early in the season, there's hope!
