Gheez! I haven't heard or thought of 'yester year' since the Lone Ranger. So, anyway, I was daydreaming as nearly everyday and I was thinking back to when my cousins and I would go around with the church group singing christmas carols. I also recall my cousin, Carol, in the senior chior at school and going to the capitol building to hear the chior sing as it came down the grand stairway in the beautiful old capitol building. Each was in a lovely chior gown and holding a candle. It was fantastic and so very beautiful! It was an augh inspired moment from my past. No days I rarely hear or see groups of carolers. What happened?

Think it startred happening when..... They started saying ahppy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.
And its a shame the family next door comes over every year and sings to us. but I don think they go through the neighbor hood singing like we used too. The neighborhood now have to many differnt eithnic groups of people.
And dont appreciate carolers any more!

Sounds about right! I want to go back to how it was when I was younger. When my grams was here and all was so much simpler then. Now it is money, money money and heaven forebid you should do anything off the written list of can do's for 2009!

Up until a few years ago, we would have a Christmas caroling party every year, inviting friends and family. Usually this would be the Saturday before Christmas. After caroling around the neighborhood for about an hour or so, we would come home to warm up and eat all the goodies everyone brought over. (We always do an appetizer potluck.)
We haven't done this for a few years now, but my newest neighbors do, so now I'm home when the carolers come by our house! :)

The world has become simply too dangerous for caroling. In addition, Christianity has declined, falling to the 4th most popular religion world-wide. Lastely, many Christians now realize that the celebration of Christmas is very un-Christiany as most traditions (including the month celebrated) are firmly Pagan in origin and nature.
Though, there is nothing stopping you, celticeagle, from gathering friends and going caroling. If someone tells you to go away, simply wish them happy holidays and move on. Their loss of some music and tradition.

I used to hear lots of people singing Christmas Carols when I was growing up. I use to enjoy after joining the girl scouts going around and singing Christmas Carols. I have not seen anyone out for many many years I think that Christmas has just become to commericialize. Lots of people have forgotten why we celebrate Christmas.

That is how it gets revived. Just like you there will be many more who will be thinking of bygones. May be you could start in your area. We still have it here when youngsters come serenading with a box for collection which they use to have fun in the evening.

Bygones? Youngsters only with parents along. What 'fun' in the evening?

I do not know about caroling at the state house, but in my community we have lots of carolers, even one get together downtown at a bank on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Our church carols on a Wednesday night in Dec. then gets together for a chili and soup supper. They must sing to the cooks and serving crew before they can eat. When I was Social Services at a nursing home we had carolers every Wednesday in December as well as some other nights.

That sounds nice. Might have that here for the nursing homes too that I am not aware of. I am curious as to your area.

What do you mean what happened? Political correctness, that's "what happened". People don't want to offend anybody by singing about Jesus because that would hurt another sinners feelings. I'm with you, I don't hear the happy sounds of Christmas anymore just gimmie gimmie gimmie, I want I want I want. I think its time that carolers started warming up their hearts and voices.

I have been caroling as a kid a few times and up until a few years ago used to still see very few people out doing it still but I haven't seen any in a little while. I am not quite sure why they may of stopped doing this. I know that with our schools at least they still do have the high school choir go to a few different places and sing and then they have a Christmas get together for the parents where the kids can go and sing for all of the parents in fact our is coming up here in a few days. I really enjoy that and I make sure I video tape it every year just for my own keepsake. It would be nice to go back to those yester years when caroling was almost a Christmas must....I think even though everyone claims that it is not and "tries" not to Christmas is becoming more about the materials and the dollar amount and not about the nice sentiments like caroling..
