Should Parents educate their kids more on the "true" meaning of Christmas?

Today, most children associate Christmas with "toys", "playstations", "shoes", etc...Whose responsibility is it to teach kids this is "not" what Christmas is about? Voice how you feel. Thanks!

The "true" meaning of Christmas is how people interpret it. It doesn't have to be religious, just because it originally was. If the parents feel strongly about their Christian heritage, then they should teach their children, but it's far from necessary, in my opinion.

I respect your opinion. But when you saying the "true" meaning is how people interpret it...I'm lost there. So are you saying the "TRUTH" in any situation, is just what you think? I always thought the TRUTH in any situation is comprised of FACTS. So the True meaning of Christmas means what?

Not all things are how you interpret it, but emotional things are. Isn't religion supposed to move you emotionally, and therefore it's how you interpret it. If you think that Christmas is merely just Jesus's birthday, then I think you are overlooking it's true value. I'm personally not religious, but I think that Christmas has a more metaphorical, for lack of a better word, meaning than just the birth of Jesus. That's just my two cents though.

I consider you two cents very informative, and in facts means more than 2 cents to me! Thanks! I am just concerned with all my nieces and cousins who only associate Christmas with how many presents they get...this is starting to really get to me. Whether or not religion pays a part...I just thinks children should understand that Christmas is not about what they get. Aside from religion, how about GIVING BACK!!! They just don't understand it! Which leads back to parenting...Right?

How one wants to interpret the meaning of a holiday is entirely up to them. But if we want to look for the "true" meaning then there has to be only one, the religious one. Anyway, whatever we interpret it, certainly the spirit of giving is prefered over associating Christmas with getting more gifts.

It is the parent's responsibility to teach their kids what Christmas is about and that includes the religious side of it. Without Jesus there would be no Christmas. Yes, there would probably be other holidays like Hannuka (not sure how it's spelled) and others but if you celebrate Christmas, you should know what it is about. Personally, I believe if your not going to look at the religious side of it, then you shouldn't celebrate Christmas because that is part of Christmas.
