getting started with internet marketing

ive played around with this for awhile but without a lot of success so like many others i begin to wonder how do you do this successfully do you need a website even if you have a website still have to get traffic & to keep people there would think it needs to be a very good one just wondering if theres any one here who can point me in the right direction as i really want to get involved in internet marketing
