This phot shows my updated tree decorated with some art work my grand daughter, Emma, made this weekend. It brought back some childhood memories. Next year I am thinking of having the grandkids decorate our tree the old fashioned way. I want to have them make some loop strings from construction paper like the ones in this photo. Have them string popcorn and whole fresh cranberries on strings. Have you ever made these type of tree decorations as an adult or in your childhood?

Oh yes. My grandmother was really in to making homemade ornaments and every year I would go over to her house and we would make home made ornaments. I don't have any of them though, any those that are still in existence are at my mom's house. I was a Girl Scout Leader and we did make some ornaments with the troop. Here is a picture of a reindeer ornament we made in Girl Scouts.

hi grandpa Bob oh yes we used to always decorate our tree with garlands of popcorn and cranberries and paper loops too. and we had an angel that went on top the tree ever year. and of course w always hung our stockings the night before too. and of course we got nuts and apples and oranges and little toys in our stockings that was about the only time I ever saw delicious apples as a kid. we had a huge apple orchard but our apples were not the delicious variety. winesaps, and jonathons and other red varities and granny green apples and some huge apples with rusty ridges around them called russets. We had a set of fruit shaped ornaments that were made in chezlavakia cannot spell it but anyways it always intrigued me as a kid to know they came from so far away. Now here at Gold Crest we have a huge imitation tree with a lot of doodads on it but somehow it lacks something we never used false trees we got the real thing and they always smelled so good. I used to love Christmas but not like this here at gold crest, maybe i am being scrougeish but its not home to me. guess I must try harder.

As a child we had a large fireplace and it was awesome this time of year. Stockings hung on the cement mantle and fires burning each night as well. Christmass was always a Catholic midnight mass then a huge fire with hot chocolate then gift openong. I miss the old times a lot. Just cheer up and do not worry about things as the Holiday is all about cheer be it you recieveing or giving. Mostly giving is my thoughts of this Holiday. Cheers and happy holidays to you and yours.

Yes I use to make those ring loop strings out of construction paper. I also made santa clause and frosty the snowman with construction paper and we hung them on the tree. We also made the popcorn string which was not to long because us kids use to eat the popcorn as we were stringing it. Sorry I do not have any pictures.

For years, I had childrens home made decorations on my Christmas tree. They were usually made by my daughter, but sometimes my step daughter. We have done the paper chain thing, had it hanging everywhere, not just on the tree.
Cant say we tried popcorn or cran berries. A lot of individual decorations were made; stars, trees, Father Christmass, bells etc.
It is lovely for the kids to see their decorations on the tree. I still have a few remaining that didnt eventually break.

I think that is a great idea. I misss the good old fashioned Christmas's. I used to string popcorn on a string also. I used to make the paper loops also for our tree when I was a little girl. I miss those days.

We never did homemade decorations as a kid, but now as an adult I try to do some. We have a wreath that the kids and I made last year, and this year I'm sewing simple felt owls for them. Plus they color and paint trees, candles, and stockings that AI hang up around the house.

The Christmas just before we were married, we made paper chains to fill out the tree decorations.

We take our daughter(her name is Emma, too by the way) to a place called YOUR FIRED! where she can hand paint her own ornament. Then the pottery piece is of course fired. We have ornaments on the tree that she made in preschool and kindergarten. We intend to do the same with our son when he is a bit older.

That sounds like a whole lot of fun. Maybe I should get my kids to do some of that this year! My mom used to make ornaments (from kits) - I think I still have one or two of them. And we used to make paper ones to sell at her women's club Christmas bazaar.

I remember doing all of that when I was a kid. I even remember the "cookie" ornaments. We'd make the dough and then roll and cut it out, and then either paint then bake or bake then paint, can't really remember which order that part was in. I miss those days.
I've been trying to find the recipe for those ornaments but haven't been able to find it yet, so if anyone has it, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks:)
I think the homemade ornaments kids make are the best.
All of them on this discussion are very cute.
Merry Christmas.

Aw that tree is cute. We haven't done anything like that, but it does sound like a good idea and a good way to save money. Although when I was younger we made some christmas ornaments from school and my mom always hung it up on our Christmas tree every year and she still does to this day

when I was a kid we always had an animal that would eat things like popcorn
Now, one year we had a party and made decorations to decorate the kitchen, that was a LONG time ago - before I had so many cats! but we made lots of the paper chains and hung them around the kitchen!

What a wonderful way to spend time with Emma....my kids and I made homemade ornaments every year when they were little...one ornament a year...when they left home they got to take them with and start their own trees....I love the popcorn and cranberry trees....I have a little four foot tree my youngest granddaughter gets to decorate herself....we call it Ali's tree!

We never had a tree when I was young that didn't have the chains made from construction paper on our trees. AND all our trees were real. I have strung popcorn at one time, too. I think my kids also made the chains for our trees when they were very little. It was fun.

What a beautiful tree! The idea of the grandkiddos making paper chains and popcorn/cranberry garlands is a beautiful one. :))
Homemade snowflakes are also fun and pretty.

every christmas, I love making do it yourself decorations using long forgotten and kept things. As you have said it brings back old memories and you got to spend less on your christmas decors

Hi Grandpabob,
That's very creative. You made use of some indigenous materials to make a great christmas tree. very practical and economical. you gave me an idea to make the same for next year. there are so many things that i can use to make such an ornament like yours! Congratulations for a job well done and power hug to your grand daughter, emma!
