Though I haven't a child yet, I think I will buy a laptop for him/her. It's useful for children to learn to how to use computer in my opinion.

My cousins are using laptops(modified for children) at school already it is part of their curriculum, they get them when they enrol in school in their second or third year not sure (between ages 8 and 10) it is subsidized and they are specially adapted for children, with limited software and capability with strict nanny programs and internet access limitations. The problem in today's world is not so much if a child should get a computer but when.

My kids who are 10 and 12 have their own laptops already. My husband and I felt that it was best to get them their own so that they will be familiar with the programs and applications. They were also instructed to take care of their laptops. Indeed, surfing on the internet has become a problem but they are not allowed to use it until their homework is done and no more than an hour a day. Otherwise, their laptops will be confiscated which I have done already on occasions when my rules were broken.

If it will be used to assist them in their studies, like for doing research, I will. The use must be regulated, 'though. The child must be guided.
