Have You Ever Gotten A Call From a Creditor About Your Neighbor's Account?

I came in today after picking up my children from school and as usual I go over and check my answering machine. I was shocked to have a message from a woman that said she worked for Captial One and she was trying to get in touch with my neighbor. She said that if I knew him could I please tell him to give her a call. I tell ya, I could not believe this!! I was outraged!! I could not believe that a credit card company was calling me to ask ME to tell my neighbor to give them a call about his delinquent account. So, I called this number back and told them that I was highly pissed that they called ME! And I asked them where did they get my number from? That the status of my neighbor's account was none of my business and futhermore why were they calling me and disturbing me! I asked her to never call me again and if they did I would take this matter to another level. Can you believe that this kind of thing is happening? Is nothing private anymore? Your debt is your own and absolutely none of anybody's business, especially your neighbors. I would have been horrified if this call had been about myself. Have you ever gotten a call like this before? It's my first and I hope it is my last!!!

Hi canesfan, that sort of practice would be totally illegal in the UK. The data protection act there means that one is not allowed ever to discuss another persons debt even with a relative living at the same address. Many spouses find this very hard to accept when they try to give or obtain information but it is illegal to discuss with any third party.

Yes, that is true, thea09. Even if a spouse has the utility lights on in his name, the wife is not allowed to have access to his account. She has to sign up as having second authorization so that she can ask questions when she calls in about her husband's account. The laws are very strict about giving out others peoples information to someone that is not authorized on another persons account. I don't know how this company was allowed to call, canesfan.. I wonder why is her neighbor giving out her number anyway??

This practice is illegal in the US as well. Just because people don't follow the rules doesn't mean what they do is legal.

Good on ya M! To give them a piece of your mind! That is indeed scary. Makes you think. If this sort of thing happens, then how would I know if companies are calling my neighbors about my debts. (So, is that the reason why my neighbors duck everytime I wave hi to them?) Yeah, the big question is, how did they manage to get your number? I never got that kind of call. Hopefully I never will, and hopefully none of my neighbors too.

I don't know how they got my number but I'm gonna find out. I'm on this like a dog on a bone!! I will be glad when I get to 200 chats and I can use the smiley faces that everyone else uses. I feel so left out!! :(

Did your neighbor put you down as a reference when they applied for the card, without telling you or asking your permission? When any account goes delinquent, creditors call the references given by the account holder.

this happened to my mother in the past. She got a call about her next door neighbor's bills. She just told steve about the call and that was that. I would not want this to happen to me.

I agree with Sharon Johnson, I would not want this to happen to me either. If so, someone has some explaining to do!

Wow. I think that is rediculous. I also think that if they called you and you asked them how they got your number that you have a right to know how they got it. Maybe you don't need to know all of the information about their account but if they are going to call you about it then you should know where they got you're number. I also think it's crazy to get calls about your NEIGHBOR's account.

Hi, canesfan1964. I have never received any phone calls like this, ever. If I did I would probably would have handled this matter the same way that you have. I wonder if your neighbor gave them your phone number?? Does your neighbor even have your phone number? Are you by chance your neighbor's reference? These are the questions that you will have to ask yourself so that this can determine if this neighbor has gotten your permission to use your personal information for his credit card. If he does not have any permission, he can be in pure hot water! In the past people would call for a woman named Sandra H. They would be all kinds of creditors calling for her. She must have owed many people because they would call constantly. I would tell them that they had the wrong number and I would even hang up on them too. It was very annoying. Mu suggestion to you is to have a talk with your neighbor about this. Tell him that you don't want his creditors calling your home for him. Does your neighbor have his own phone? If so, he needs to let them call him at his home instead of yours. My guess is that you did not gave him your number to begin with. I hope that you can get this matter taken care of. The last thing you need is for someone to be using you like you are their last straw. Fix this matter before it gets out of hand. I am also curious, if you did not give your neighbor your phone number, then who did? Is your phone number listed in the phone book? If these questions answered a, no. Then you really have some investigating to do. And the first person that should be on your list is your next door neighbor.

These situations are so weird to be in. I had a sort-of similar thing happen earlier this week, actually, that I was about to post a discussion about (when i saw yours). . A collection agency's repo-man came to our door looking for a 'Robert'. In my household, we have a Paul, a Ben, a Carla, and an Alyssa (me) - and two cats - Missy and Dainty, but NO Robert. The collection dude said that this address, MY address, was the one that he provided. And then he didn't pay his car loan bill for a few months. I was shocked to think that people could get away with giving out the WRONG address to creditors. How can this happen?! Don't they check into this kind of stuff?! Don't they have a verification process of some sort?! Anyway, the repo man was pretty mad that "Robert" didn't live at my address (nothing I can do about that), and actually seemed like he doubted what I was telling him. Which was kind of annoying. This Robert guy definitely made the creditor dude's job a little bit harder. But, anyway, point being? I got WAY too much information about some Robert Doe that I don't even know. Creditors should probably be a little more careful, right?

yeah, and i am pissed because they kept calling about that damn bill and it happened that the guy put our phone number so that they wouldn't be bothered by it.
