Hey mylotters. I am a college student and my friends asked me this questions which I was not able to answer.
I know that cow's farts, as silly as it might sound, have something to do with the polluting of the environment. If so, cows are very important animals as from them we get milk, cheese and meat. Now, if cows were a serious threat to the environment, we humans cannot just remove them all from earth because we have a high demand for meat, especially with the on growing population.
Therefore my question for you is, Do cow farts really pollute a lot? Are they the reason behind such things as global warming and air pollution?

Cow farts produce methane gas, which is way more polluting then carbon dioxide. They went and cut down the rain forest, which are the lungs of the earth and then replaced it with these cows that produce this very pollutant gas. So yes I do think their farts pollute, unfortunately. They are in high demand, but if it's in between being able to have a nice steak or saving the earth, I'm pretty sure people would choose saving the earth, at least I hope! We don't need these animals to survive we can get dairy from other animals that don't produce this gas, and we can live off other kinds of meat, like Venison which is a lot leaner and better for you then beef is, and in my opinion way tastier!

hey cows fart can be made pollution free by fixing a gadget on there as s which can convert methane gas into some usefull gas..we cant lose cow as they give us meat and milk and other dairy products..

Very funny you mention this actually, as in scientific terms, apart from being 'beneficial' offering us such resources, yes unfortunately, they do pollute. However i don't really think that they pollute by farting. However, their faeces does indeed contain a high amount of Methane (CH4) which is quite a harmful pollutant to the enviornment. They are a part of the cause for global warming, but it is not as harmful as Carbon Dioxide is. Carbon Dioxide is the main factor for global warming.
NB: Mind you, when methane is used as a 'fuel' it releases carbon dioxide anyway.
So basically yes, cow's do indeed pollute . The picture made me rofl :).

man cow farts may be a pollutant but tell me is it half as dangerous as a exasuts of a slightly old vehical. this is human nature we do every thing bad then try to blame every thing aruond u. there wouldent have a word called pollution if not for human activity. and not we blame cows for farting.

But how can we not blame them if they produces that much harmful gas from their farts and dung? How can you not believe this if it has already been proven? I know humans do pollute really bad but since cows produce a lot of the harmful methane gas, it makes it harder. Especially since carbon dioxide is less harmful than the methane gas.

Hollo! I think that on this Earth, the real source of pollution are human beings, our humanity. From ancient times to the present, from the abundant natural resources to the present scarcity of natural resources;with this process is that for the Earth's injuries, and serious pollution of the environment for human survival. The result of all our people themselves.

Cow farts are more responsible for greenhouse gas pollution than humans. Just more evidence that our presence isn't so much to blame for climate change.

Cow farts contain methane gas, just as human or pretty much any other animal farts do. If there are large overcrowded pastures of cows then there may be some reason for concern but in general it is not nearly as much fact as it is fiction. I think there should be much greater concerns in regards to global warming and air pollution that should be considered before we look at the cow.

Of course! If cow's farts contains methane, and methans being one of the most harmful gasses to the environment, then it would be defenetly bad for us. Imagine all those cows on earth, certainly outpopulating humans, producing that much methane all together.. terrible!

cows dont pollute in fact in past there were more cows compared to now then we would have perished in cow fart

No dude, your answer is incorrect. As well as reading all your responses (other users), I also researched a litte bit myself and found that the gas produces from cow farts and doung, being methane, is 2 times more pollutive than all the world itself. It's pretty strange alright, but methane is one of the most harmful gasses to our environment, here on earth.

I remember when the theory of cows' farts being responsible for global warming and pollution etc. was first bandied around as at the time, I worked with scientists who were being criticised for supporting industry. When verbally attacked for their inventions etc. being the greater cause by far of pollution, they argued back that it's all down to cows' farts. What they blinked and missed the plot of though, was that the western world has only been industrialised since the 17th century and cows have been around farting like crazy on the planet for a lot longer than industrialisation, and the air was fine until we invented the car, opened the factories belching soot & chemicals into the atmosphere, fine until we began to rape the earth of its natural resources, fine until the aeroplane, and on and on etc. I somehow think that using cows' farts as a reason for the cause of pollution is a cop-out, because industrialisation has made a lot of people rich and they want to keep reaping the profits from it - so, the easiest thing for them to do and hold onto their way of life is to blame it on the cows and hope that the public believe them.

I do no think so as cow fart maybe too strong but not enough to pollute the environment as their are many contributing factors which could contribute to the air pollution which affect the surrounding such as fumes from factories, drivers smoke, garbage and other dirty stuffs.
