We had to put our dog down 2 years ago because she could no longer stand. This was the third dog in my life that I had to put down. It is so painful. Now the family feels ready to get a new dog, but I don't know if I could handle that again, when they die it is so hard. Should we get a puppy?

The facts are that dogs live shorter lives than humans, but that doesn't help the hurt. It's been 7 years since we lost our last dog and we have had the one we have now about 5 years, we didn't get her as a puppy but she was about 9 months old and she was a rescue. We just didn't want to go through the puppy stage again. Just remember the joy of having a dog far out weighs the pain of loosing one.

I think you should get another pup for your family. For me,if anything happened to my dog I would replace him.Probably not right away though.I would miss having a dog around. They become part of the family, and it is sad when they die.I would get another one.Good luck with your decision!

Beleive me it is the right time, if you r telling yourself u need a puppy, the time is right. Get the kind you want and enjoy a new present into your house and life. It will be one of the best presents ever...The hard parts r always worth it in the end, u will see for your selves... REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV / CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET,THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U.....EVEN THROUGH THE HARD TIMES..

I am always going to say yes because there are so many that need rescue. There are alot of dogs that need rescue. I know it was painful for you , I have had to do it too but wasn't it a reward to have sucha a wonderful thing as a pet? Maybe you should wait a little while until you have had time to grieve. However I do think you should get a dog. As long as you are a responsable pet owner, willing to pay for vet bills if they get sick, excercise them and feed them quality food. You have had dogs before so I hope this was what you were doing and It sounds like you are compassionate towards animals so when you are ready, you should adopt again.:)

Dogs are man's best friend. No wonder the loss of a dog is almost as painful as the loss of a human being. In many instances, dogs can be more faithful and loyal than even family or friends. If you like having a puppy, you should not think of losing it even before getting one. All living beings have a life which they cannot exceed and this is a fact that needs to be accepted. Once you accept this fact then the pain and sorrow will lessen.

I know how you feel--I've already outlived three dogs and really physically felt my heart breaking every time. The last one--about four years ago--was especially hard; he had cancer and the last few months of his life it was pretty much 24/7 care betwwen him and me, and when we made the decision to let him go I was a mess for a long time. But as a few other people have already said here--it's nature's way that we outlive our dogs; their life spans are shorter than ours. Losing them is so, so hard--but having lived without them altogether would have been so much harder and emptier. About a year after our last poor sick guy passed on, we got another puppy. She's three now, and while I was the last one in the house on the fence ( like you)--I'm the one she follows around the house, plops her ball in my lap to play a hundred times a day, and steals the blankets from me in bed at night. I wouldn't have it any other way--even if, God forbid, something were to happen to her tomorrow. Can't imagine never having had her in the family. So--it's your call to make, but if you open your heart again there are rewards---again.

I guess a puppy would help ease the pain of losing a loved one. You'll remember your previous dog but at least you're coping with it. I suggest you get one.

I think it is a very personal decision. Dogs can bring so much joy! They love you unconditionally. But, they are a lot of work. And, you can't just leave for a trip somewhere. You have to make sure they are cared for. It is so painful when they pass away. I am dreading the day I lose my doggy. But, I think he brings me a lot of happiness. I think the happiness he brings and the memories he will give me are worth the sadness in the end. I don't know if I helped you or not!
