When Was The Last Time You Wrote A Handwritten Letter To Someone?

My printer has no ink in it and I have no money to replace the cartridges so - when a letter arrived recently from my penfiend, Thaddeus, I had to resort to hand-writing it.
At first I thought this might be a bit of a pain but in actual fact it seemed more personal being a hand-written rather than a printed letter. I used to write letters to relatives and friends many years ago and it brought back memories of that too, I suppose.
The one advantage of typing a letter is that it is quicker but my next one to Thaddeus will be hand-written too as I haven't sorted my printer cartridges out yet!

Hi Janey,
The last time i wrote a handwritten letter for my husband was almost three years ago. i was in the US then for and my husband was here in the philippines with our kids. i wrote him a letter and inserted some of my pictures. now, i only make simple notes to him as we are happily living together. i wrote him a note during his birthday. i bough him a pair of shoes and i wrote a note on the inside part of the box cover. i love surprising my husband with a note!

it's nice that you keep a diary of your childhood experiences. i can imagine the evolution of your penmanship and how you express yourself there--the innocent one coming our of her box and writing happy and exciting moments of her life. how i wish i was able to do it. i had lots of happy childhood memories.
i keep a scrap book of all my friends and suitors cards and loveletters since i was in elementary, until i reached highschool and college. it was a lot and had 3 volumes hehehehehehe. my husband even saw some of them.

That is lovely that you still write notes to your husband. I still keep a diary and have done so since I was 11 years old. It helps me to remember stuff from the past as I do have happy memories of going to rock concerts and the like.

Good for you! I know what you mean about some handwriting being easier to read than others. I have gone from doing joined up writing to printed writing. It is quicker for a start!

This is a great topic for discussion. I like the convenience of email and typing out a letter. I can seem to reach more people this way and love sending e- cards which I will be doing this year to about 90% of my friends and family. It is nice because it saves on paper, the environment, and the high cost of postage. but..........I do remember receiving the letters from my aunt and holding the pages in my hand while reading her message. She was a good writer and looked forward to getting those letters. After I would read them I would gently tuck the pages back into the envelope and pull out again when I was ready to respond a few days later. I love technology but it is nice to have something you can hold in your hand too and perhaps tuck away and save forever. I am more likely to send a message, card, letter by email than I am by regular mail so that allows me to keep in touch with people more often than I normally would.

Thank you for your great comment as you have touched upon how good it is to both write letters AND communicate via the internet. The latter is much faster isn't it and you can communicate with many people all at the same time whereas if you wrote letters to everyone it could get a bit expensive!

I often write a handwritten letter to my boyfriend this year...haha.. He is in France and i'm in China.. A long distance isn't it? I know letter is not as immediate as email, but that's waht I like about it..I like the surprise of finding a letter in the mailbox and the anxious anticipation I feel when I'm getting ready to open it.. I like the fact that I can take it with me to read at my leisure...hahahaha ..I like to imagine the way he looked when he wrote it: what he were waring, the surroundings...It's so much more romantic than reading sth on the same machine...

Awww, that's lovely! I know what you mean about the anticipation of waiting for a letter to arrive, especially from somewhere far away. How romantic, I love it :-)

In all my years of living in this life, I have never written a letter to someone, besides the letters that I wrote in school to improve language and what not. I think it because that since I'm quite young (19), I was born in the "Modern" age where, by the time I had learned about computers, they already had the "e-mail" system, which I use very frequently. The cartridges of the printer are very expensive indeed, that's why I don't type any letters, because I would just be wasting ink and money. Bad things about hand written letters would be the money cost of the ink, the postage cost, the time it takes for your friend to recieve it, the envelope and so on, where as a regular e-mail would be very easy to work with and free! (except if your inclusding the money that you pay for your internet bill).

You make a very good point about age. I'd not thought about that until your comment. We all have to save on paper too don't we so emailing seems the sensible option as far as that goes.

I tend to write business and functional letters on my printer but prefer to write letters to my family by hand, especially at Christmas it seems more personal, the disadvantage is not having an auto corrector and ability to add images etc (e-mails don't count right ;-) ). Though I have to admit I write a lot less now and phone more it is more instant and lost the habit I suppose.

That's one advantage with technology isn't it? So instant. You can send an email to the other side of the world in a blink of an eye whereas a letter can take way, way longer than that.

It's been a long time since I last wrote a hand written letter. As a matter of fact, I think it's been at least thirteen years. I tried writing a relative close to my age who I was close to as a kid a few times but I kind of gave up after a while.

Not everyone has the knack of writing letters. I have this annoying habit of rambling on but letters I have sent to people have usually resulted in making them feel happier, so I can't be that bad at it I suppose.

Well I have not sent a handwritten letter in about 3 years. Now when my boyfriend was in prison we sent handwritten letters all the time. I could not visit him as he was too far away. Our only real commucation was via letter and phone calls once in a blue moon really. I actually kinda of miss writing. I use to love to write and I always got compliments on my handwriting as I am pretty good at it as well. Also I thought about starting a business where I would hand write cards and such for people but it never came through. For me the lost of handwritten letters is a shame and most of the kids growing up now I feel may never even learn to write as we have. Take care nice topic and happy mylotting to you

Thank you so much for your lovely comment! It is much appreciated. I feel exactly the way you do. Younger people, especially, have lost the art of creative writing, whatever you wanna call it. Even Valentine's Day messages are sent online now. Such a shame.

When I was a kid I had lots of penpals and I would hand write letters almost everydays! My handwritting is a little hard to read, but even so, I enjoyed it a lot, and anso enjoyed receiving letters as well.
Since I got internet at home I found that the electronic way is quicker and cheaper, and you don't need to go to buy stamps or envelopes.
Even so, I would like to try to write something sometime.

Writing can be a good way of expressing yourself although there is nothing wrong with the electronic version either. Saving on paper for a start :-)

I actually write a lot of letters by hand because I think it makes them more genuine, and more sentimental. Whenever I have a boyfriend I always write him handwritten love notes or letters, whenever I have random thoughts in my head or just want to tell them how much I like/love them. Whenever I write my Grandparents I also always write by hand because it shows them I take the time to sit down and write, and of course I want to show off my good penmanship! Haha, I like to look at all of my different letters, notes from when I was little to now and see how much my writing changed.

Telephones are more personal than messages though, don't you agree? Mum lives 100 miles away from me and I ring her 3 times a week. There is no way I could get her to use a computer although she does miss me sat there next to her typing away on this very machine in fact..it's moved house lol :-)

This discussion remmend me that i have not written a letter for many years, but I still think if you want to say something, the handwritten letter is a more sincere manner, especially a love letter,it is so romantic! so i will consider writing some letters as gifts of this new year to my darling and my friends.

I do not remember the last time I had handwritten a letter to anyone. I do not have a habit of writing letters. With telephone and now the internet, I did not feel the need to write a letter to anyone.

yesterday! well not exactly a letter to a friend or someone but a notice of explanation. two of my subordinates got terminated from our company and I had top explain my side. Since they were my responsibilities. I didnt want to type it instead I made it handwritten so its more personal. =)

You notice that journalists still do shorthand at press conferences and the like? I really wish I had carried on with that after leaving school, it is an amazing skill to learn but so easy to forget.

Huh! I think most will feel guilty about it. Computer, text messages and other modern technologies created for communication took the place of the old days.
Sometimes it is nice to look back and worth a try doing what has been done before like hand written love letters and messages. Its good this post reminded me to do it one time.

I am pleased that this post has helped you in that regard. Hand-written letters seem to have more thought gone into them, especially if you stick hearts on them, decorate them, etc. :-)
