Do You Have Your Priorities Straight?

My husband and I are going to Toronto on Christmas day, and staying till December 26th. We decided we need a vacation, and the recent family drama has made us feel that Christmas would be the ideal day to take that vacation.
Anyway, tonight on TV we saw an advertisement for a theatratrical production of Fiddler On The Roof, that we would have liked to have seen. Not knowing where the theatre was, I called the hotel where we'd be staying, and asked them about it. It was only a 5 minute cab ride.
My husband looked up the price of the tickets, and realized that the expensive seats would be over $120 a piece, and the cheap seats would be $75 a piece. I can not see the stage well unless I am in the front row, but since I like the music well enough and know the story well, the cheap seats would have been OK.
HOWEVER, the cost of two of the cheap seats is about $20 more than a night at the hotel would have cost, and the timing of the play would have cut us a little late for the bus home, since the last one goes home at 12:45 AM on the morning of the 27th, and we woudln't know how late the play was going to run. Probably not that late, but still. Who wants to rush it, and schedule every second of a vacation?
So we decided that if we were to spend the extra $150 we'd rather spend it on an extra night in a luxary hotel, than on a two hour theatre production.
So, if you were in our shoes, what would you have done?
And in other situations, do you have your priorities straight?
I'd love to hear about similar situations, and decisions that you have made.

Yes Danishcanadian, you have taken a correct decision. Though we enjoy the programme, since the last bus is at 12.45 AM, half of your mind will be in catching the bus and when the play will get over. Enjoyment is for relaxation and it is not advisable to invite tension. I too would have taken the same decision, if I were in your place. Well, the same situation arose to me some time back. Some cultural association has arranged for couple of concerts here. I wanted to attend a fusion programme involving Best Drummer, violinist, ganjira, ghatam, veena etc. But it will get over at 11.00 Pm or so. The last bus is at 9.45 Pm. I am not sure whether I will get autorikshaw or taxi at that time as many will rush for it as soon as the programme gets over. Two ladies alone struggling for transport at that time on the road, I did not feel it is worth taking risk. So I dropped the idea of attending that programme. Thanks for the discussion.

It al depends on how much I wanted to see the play. I always wanted to see Chicago. If there were a choice between seeing it and staying at a hotel Iwould choose seeing the play. But then again I could sit and see it in the cheap seats And I don't have a romantic interest so a luxary hotel would be lost on me.So the best thing to do is to sit down and think what you want mostand go for it. ps. did get to see chicago back in 2002! It was a dream come true.

Last July I almost flew down to LA to see Fiddler on the Roof. It was Topol's farewell tour and I wanted to go really badly. Anyway, I didn't go because it was on a work night and I just didn't think I could swing it. But if I were going to be down there anyway, I would have gone, $120 tickets or no. In the case of your trip, if it were THAT Fiddler on the Roof, ie with Topol or somebody else I would want to see, yeah I would have paid the money. If it were with nobody I had ever heard of, I might pass.

Woah! I wonder how you people can write somuch lengthy discussions. going just by the heading, I would like to add something about my priorities.
Normally, I have my priorities straight. I prefer to stay on track not getting influenced by others suggestions and try to be as original as possible.
I don't let others to change me or take me into wrong deeds which people normally do.
Happy mylotting!

That sounds like a good idea to me. My husband and I may do something like this when we get our daughter raised. We need a vacation anyway and why not take one around Christmastime when the kids are raised? We can still celebrate if we want to, when we get back.

How nice to be able to take a break! Personally, I do feel if it is worth spending the money over a 2-hr theatre production, it is worth spending. At least you will not regret it later. An extra night stay in a luxury hotel can be done anytime but the play? I would have chosen what I will not regret. go for the theatre production if it will make my day.

I would choose the extra night in the hotel too!
If and when I get any kind of real vacation it will be of my own doing....should be on my goal list for saving money that I earn online.

hi danishcanadian oh the Fiddler on the Roof I dont blame you
'for wanting to see it, but those prices are really steep.I
think I would probably have done just as you did as staying
in a luxury hotel would be special for me too. and maybe you
could get a dvd or cd of Fiddler but of course it wouldnt be
the same as seeing the real Play at all. I ca nnot really
think of any similar situations that I have been in recently'
where I had to think of the priorities. Maybe you will find
another chance one day soon to see the Fiddler, I loved that when we saw it on television and the music, that was so good.

You did the right thing. We travel a lot and when people start pulling this way and that we just cut them loose. We don't cater to anybody, especially father time. We prioritize and if you can't see us, we'll see you on the flip side. You didn't have to cram your holiday down time into a rush. Its good you had a choice to do something for yourselves.

When I had my vacation somewhere in asia I chose to spend more in to having the the asian experience, viewing places and actually spending on packages that are more costly than my hotel stay.
I'm not so much of the hotel rest-type of person so I'd say go and spend on what matters during your vacation. If you are going on a vacation to see and experience the place then go spend things other than the hotel.
