I have a hard time keeping my laptop free of spyware. Does anyone have any good and cheap recommendations for software I can use. I keep having to reboot, and I have had to use my recovery cd twice over the last 6 months.

Same here! I use avira too. First free edition, then I switch to Premium Suite. Never use additional firewall or spyware remover as they are not bothering me too much.

You can try purchasing McAfee or Kaspersky as an antivirus/antispyware. For a more radical route, you can completely reinstall windows. First, you should back up all of your personal information and insert your recovery cd to erase everything on your hard drive and start anew.

The first thing you need to do is back up any files that you want to save on a flash drive or some other portiable storage device. If your computer's that bad off its going to need a clean install of windows. Chances are you got a worm or something and the only way to remove it is to reinstall windows.
Once you've backed up your files that you want to keep. Reinstall windows. This can generally be done through a CD, (or if its sony, a link in the control panel) and just go ahead and chose clean install. This will remove not only the spyware and all your files and such. So.... please remember to do that.
Once you've reinstalled windows run windows update and reinstall the safeguards. Your computer should provide you with links for anti-virous programs and anti-spywhere problems. However none of those will do you any good untill you reformat your hard drive. Remember you'll need at least a day to devote to this because it can take a very long time.
