I seem to have a permanent coughing problem. And oddly it only happpens in India. when I visit my parents in South Africa, I'm fine. But here I cannot seem to shake this off. I take medicines, and it improves, but after a while, I'm back to square one. Will you all believe I got sick in October, and have had this coughing since. I am still coughing. Twice in between i almost recovered too, but it came back again. It's not TB, or anything serious, because then it wouldn't happen just every time after I flu or a cold. Does any of you ever experience this? I am sick of it, literally, and I really want to get rid of this permanently... please help!!

Well everyone has already suggested going to the doctor...which is very important that you do if you haven't already. It certainly could be an allergy to almost anything.. One thing and the first thing that came to my mind was Mold. You should check your living quarters and where you work to see if you can see any signs of it.
Black Mold
Researchers once believed that black mold (Stachybotrys) only occurred in 1 to 3% of homes, and that the spores were rarely airborne because the mold colonies are so slimy. However, in 1997 while working as an environmental health specialist in the Allergy Section at Children’s Mercy Hospital, MOLDetect's Susan Flappan found that Stachybotrys mold was present in 30 to 40% of the asthmatic/allergic patients’ homes she investigated. "We were surprised," Flappan said. "This mold was supposed to be very infrequent, very rare. We found it was a lot more common problem than we ever thought it would be." In Flappan's mold study, 69% of the Stachybotrys-positive homes had airborne spores, with concentrations ranging from 84 to 8,400 spores per m3. While "black mold" spores are slimy when wet, they become powdery when dry and therefore can easily become airborne.

Allergens in the Home
Although all interior structures harbor allergens, the private home has been shown to have higher allergen content than public places. Thus, it is prudent to make the home a primary target for allergen avoidance measures. Many areas of the home are prone to allergen accumulation. For example, the bedroom can be a favorite habitat for dust mites, which flourish in mattresses, pillows, carpets, draperies and/or upholstered furniture. Cockroach antigen is frequently found in kitchens or bathrooms. Animal dander from cats and dogs can be found in the soft furnishings throughout a home, even when a pet is not present. Fungi are prone to inhabit areas with high moisture content and low light levels. These areas include bathrooms, crawl spaces, basements, improperly maintained humidifiers or air conditioning units, and damp fabrics. The interior building shell itself can support fungal growth if moisture is permitted to leak between walls.

Have you checked your blood for alergy? You said that you only cough in India. It means something related to your environment in India might trigger it. Don't know for sure. I am not a doctor. So best suggestion for now is to check your health and blood.
Good luck and tell us the result!

It is surely an annoying cough.First consult a doctor and make some tests to discover the cause of the coughimg. It might be anything, but taking into consideration it happens only when you are in India, it might be due to pollution or something that triggers a king of allergy, as other posters said, that irritates the lungs. There are special tests for discovering the allergen, the substance or thing that trigger the allergy. I know that echinacea works very well on the respiratory system, including coughing. It is an herb with immunostimulating properties. Take care of yourself!

Your problem is really no problem at all. Your body is trying to tell you something. "Stay away from India!" don't take medicines and antibiotics because these are poisons to your system. Listen to your body, look within and recognize the truth of it. Stay away from India and you will be healthy!

Please use ZECUF
I never heard about the problem of permenent cough. I live in India. You have to go to a doctor immediately, if you have the issue and make sure that it is not TB. You are saying that it is not TB, but please check with one more doctor to confirm it. I had the problem of cough many times and once it became very worse because I ignored it during the initial stages.
Doctor gave me some medicine, but it didn't cure. I had a horrible time at work coughing and disturbing others. One of my friends suggested the the medicine ZECUF, which is ayurvedic and has no side effects. It helped me much. I also get cought once in a while and I have this syrup as soon as I get it. It works well and you can get it from any medical store in India. I live in Chennai and we have it in all local medical stores here.

I'm also have cough right now because of the weather I noticed that during December I always have a cough and it happens every year. I think I need to take more vitamin C because I hate when I'm have a cough I can't function well.

You might want to go to the doctor and see what is going on. You never know, it could be something serious. But then again, it might not. Either way, you need to know so if there is a problem, you can take measures to help it. And with the swine flu and cold/flu season, and all of these factors, it is best to get a check-up.

You must have definitely consulted a doctor on this as he/she will be the best adviser. My suggestion would be if you have not consulted so far please do so. It could be something to do with the air that you are breathing.

It seems India doesnt suit you somehow, it could be the pollutants in the atmosphere and the smog that covers most Indian cities starting from autumn end till the onset of spring...winter is particularly bad for respiratory problems so I think you should avoid this place.

This is not normal it could be anything. Its strange how things manifest in our bodies and sometimes shocking to find out the cause ,being there are so many possibilities .I have to agree with the poster above in seeking medical attention for this problem. It could be simple as a allergy or it could be very serious but suggestions here will not help you.Finding the right doctor will.I have seen patients with this problem and the range of complications it brings. Its nothing to sluff off .Good Luck to you!

there also could be pollutants in your drinking water you may want to get the water checked or maybe you can get a water purifier. and as the others said you may want to see your doctor and have a allergy test done your coughing could be triggered by the different pollutants in the air that's in India and not in Africa. also do you smoke that can be a result to permanent coughing that could be affecting your lungs and respiratory system.

My suggestion to you would be go to see your doctor. You could have injested something that could have manafested itself into a resptory infection. You might even have slight fluid in your lungs. So you need a chest x-ray to determine weather or not there isn't something in your lungs. If your doctor doesn't find anything keep pushing, ask for a high-resluition CT or something more defenitive. Most medical personal often wave things off as simple case of this or that so be pushy.
