SMS Hoax

Philippines

This is so old school. I received an SMS this morning from an individual naming himself to be a Secretary of some department (I wont mention the name since it's obviously fake), declaring that my mobile number has won PhP950,000.00 (that's about USD20,000.00). Ugh! Such a tasteless hoax. I hope this person doesn't find another victim. When you win on raffle draws, the company would call you to officially inform, not the other way around. Swindlers usually ask you to call them instead. I wish we have a system here in the Philippines to track these people down. =(

Hi, pillow Welcome to Mylot. I have received a lot of text messages like that. Usually, they claim to be lawyers. What's funny is that there are a lot of grammatical errors or wrongly spelled words in their text message. I get exasperated and want to text back pointing out the funny things in their message but, on second thought, I do not want to waste my money nor my time. Have a nice day!

Thank you, Raine. I agree. You should see the exact message I received. It was badly composed, text-talk, wrong grammar, lots of misplaced commas -- obviously unprofessional.

Oh that is a very old modus done via text. There are many that do that in many varied ways like winning a car but it is mostly in cash prize they try to lure many texters. I just hope that many won't catch the bait as sometimes the text are just very convincing to those that are in need of money. I almost receive one almopst every other week or so and I just have to ignore them as its no use to catch them since it's really hard to catch them unless they would personally meet you which I think won't come to that situation.

I saw a T.V. show where they set up an entrapment to capture these people, but that's just like cutting down the tree but not the roots. I wanna play secret agent, yeah! Seriously, it is hard but that is not reason enough for the government to ignore the problem.

It would be hard to catch these men since they operate via texting only. They would not agree on meeting you face to face and if they feel that they are being tracked they would justy not respond to you anymore. They only prey on either putting a load on their cellphone or if you can be duped upong sending them money electronically. And when they got what they want they could just disappear.

Yeah people have been doing this for soooo, so long. I don't understand how people could still actually fall for it, but someone must be because they haven't stopped trying.

Probably because it's a very enticing proposition? For instance, they'd ask you to give them $5.00 to make your winnings valid because of the joining/entry fee,tax or whatever crazy reason, but upon payment they will release your $5,000.00 winning. It's human nature to want to grab at a chance like that. Most of the time though, those who are in real need of money fall for that. Just sad.

Hi, Ronny! It's been going on for so long now, well, as Blablablu and Ybong mentioned, it happens in other countries too. I do receive a lot of misleading messages like these, too. I just posted it here now so people would be aware and not be too quick to grab at a chance to earn easy money. Anyway, you'll only realize the real value of money if you earned it, worked hard for it.

What you did is right and i think, if you haven't remember joining any raffle then don;t believe it. That is one modus operandi in our country, if they will not swindle you, they will rob you when they met you and sometimes if you ar really unlucky, kill you or rape you. It often times happen in our country. I wish this things stops in the near future.

I really hope so, too. Not just in our country. Sometimes, you just want to laugh at the situation but it is too pungent to ignore. Although, my sister did win from a contest which she doesn't remember joining. An unregistered number kept calling her for two days, so she ignored it. I told her that she won't get charged if she answered the call, and that the caller pays for it. I suggested that it may be an emergency. What she did was call the Company (Benefactor) to confirm the validity of the contest. It is wise to take precautions, besides, she was asked to claim her prize at the office. (Sorry for the slight grammatical errors, it's 1AM. Got to get some sleep)

Hmm... but they can't really filter all those messages people are sending, besides, they might cross the subscribers' privacy privileges. =(

Same here. Fake SMS have been a long time trickery since cell phone started to used in Indonesia. And if we watch carefully, their SMS actually pretty stupid. Some of their SMS said like this "Congratulation, you have won Rp. 15.000.000,- from PT INDOSAT Tbk. Please contact bla bla bla" and if we check through the sender number, they send it via Telkomsel number (another provider), then who would believe that?? Ironically, many Indonesian people still fall that. Nowadays, they are more and more extreme. Not only sending message, they actually call us and lead us into trickery thing via phone. Always check the official source (calling center line, web site, etc) upon something like this. Be careful. Regards.

Yes, that is very good suggestion. Always contact the official call center to verify the validity of the said contest. That is quite alarming, if went so far as calling you via phone in Indonesia. Really disappointing how far these swindlers will go. What is so distressing about this is because most of the victims that fall for this are the ones who really needed the money. Poverty will make people believe in anything, easy money would sound so tempting to pass up. Anything at all to change their condition.

There's no way you tract these type of people as long as you can purchase a sim card just about everywhere. The only solution to this problem is for NTC to require all those who purchase a sim card to register to them. That way NTC will be able to track who purchased that sim and corresponding charges will be filed if found that his or her sim was used to send messages for the purpose of hoaxing someone. This problem is actually not limited in one country, i recall a fellow member here who resides in India posted about a similar problem. I think almost everyone who has a cellphones has received these type of messages. Lucky are those who are intelligent enough to know that when you won, the company contacts you by calling you and sending a registered mail instead of the other way around. But still there are people who fall victim to these type of modus operandi and it's a pity that the government can't don anything about it. Cheers!

*nods* We have customers who purchase a new sim cards almost every week. Even until now, we sell bulks of sim cards. It is too much hard work for NTC to do that, really sad but there must be some other way. May be they could regulate the quantity of mobile numbers assigned to a person? Would you really need to keep 5 mobile numbers? Technology is supposed to make life easier not complicated. Anyway, I think the best solution is Public awareness, educate the people so they don't fall victim to these hoaxes. Educate the people - Instead of wasting our taxes and putting it into their own pockets. =(
