I feel that i am doing my self a favor being active online. my mind is active when i read and browse websites and specially when i participate on this site. and also i get to learn so many things online. like i got interested on learning how to start a blog and how to use html and so forth. And so in the span of 2 years being active online it has been more like a mental exercise for me everyday. like my mind is not idle any more, and i don't get bored any more. And i feel that this is a way to train my mind to remember things and not to be forgetful which usually happens as we get older and are not any more learning new things. At first i find it hard to be active online, cause i already stopped schooling long time ago. and not having a job and just being at home, doing the job at home, that my mind was not that active any more. but gradually i get used to learning things again. at first i felt like i was overwhelmed by the massive information and things i have to learn online. and i felt the need to learn a lot of things. now it is not that hard. thank God, i have learned so many things online. How about you, is being active online a mental exercise to you?

hi hotsummer, Oh yes it does! I think it helped me to be more alert and active during the day. It helped me to have a good memory and be updated on a lot things. I was able to grasp new knowledge in less time and I got to store some important facts/information in my mind and share it with others. Being online gives me a wide opportunity to grow as an individual, it was like a place to learn and to have fun at the same time!

I truly believe that keeping our mind active, whether online or not, keeps the mind busy and working. Every medical article I've read about it strongly supports the idea of an active mind being healthier with memory, learning, etc. I too believe in the 'use it or lose it' theory. So, as I rapidly get older, I do spend a lot of time on the internet reading articles (and researching things for others) and I do think it helps keep the mind more focused. I love to learn new things too, and believe a person is never too old to learn something new. Online activities provide good mental exercizes in a lot of ways. Whether it's an online group such as this, or even doing online crosswords or other puzzles, it's all good for keeping the mind thinking and growing:-)

i do a lot of things online. i play games like chess, i do learn how to build a website though i have no background on it. and i do try to learn how to do so many things online, how to cook international food. and how to do so many things. and so i think that my whole life is not enough to learn them all the things i wanna learn in life. but i think that it is good to make sure that i will have a very functional brain till old age.

It is understandable when we use our mind regularly we stay alert and make the mind ageless as we keep getting inputs from the net but the beating is harsh on the body as sitting glued in front of the computer does more harm than good to the surfers. What good is there to have an alert mind when the body is crying of being neglected?

yeah i get your point but of course we should not neglect our body .i don't. internet is a great source for me of information on how to take care of my body. i actually learned what kind of foods to eat and avoid. and there are lots of things i don't know before and lots of surprising knowledge or information that i have gained online. but i am planning to add more exercise to my routine daily. but i don't sit in front of the computer all day though. cause i have lots of things to do at home. but i still have to give time for physical exercise though.

Being active online is indeed very stimulating for the mind. I write articles online for which I really need to use my mind to the fullest in order to bring forth the best content. I also have my own blogs and I rack my brains to think of ways to bring in the much needed traffic for my articles because just writing them may not be enough. I get tired at the end of the day due to spending some hours online but I do enjoy it thoroughly.

yeah that is what i am trying to do right now. i started this week to write articles and trying to learn how to drive traffic to my articles and also to my blogs. hope that i can learn them all. i find writing articles is fun though not always easy. and it is time consuming. wish that i can write thousands of articles soon. but it is hard.

Yes, being online may be a good way to stimulate your brain in your old age, I agree with that, but you must also realise that only going on the internet isn't going to help anything about your body. You have to excercise both your body and your brain as well, my friend, so I suggest you to do some excercise if all you do is to go on the internet each day. :) But keep up the good work~ Nameless

Hi there! I also feel the same way that working on-line will help keep our mind active in old age too. You see when we do any activity either on-line or off line our minds keeps working and if our minds is in active stage, we can always feel healthy inside our body. Involvement in one thing or the other is very important and one should not sit idle.

Hi hotsummer,Yes, I feel that being active online has really helped me and continues to help me feel more alert. When I retired I knew nothing about the Internet, in fact didn't have a computer. When my eldest son bought a new computer, he gave me his old one, and shortly after that I was online. There is still a lot that I don't know and I'm learning something new everyday, but it keeps me thinking and mentally alert. Blessings.

Hi, Summer! I feel better if I can balance things out by being active online as well as offline. I think we also need to grasp the real world and communicate with other people outside. However, I agree with you that I have learned so many things online and it's a really great for our brain stimulation.

Computers - Seniors using computers will keep them young
I am saling in the same boat as you. I have never feared the pc and picked up the art of getting into it quite well. I too surf, participate here, create my own video clips, adding sound, music, upload them on youtube, have my own blog, edit my video clips that I capture as also edit images .I am also on facebook though not quite active there. I create my own xmas cards too. I truly believe that this medium will keep us mentally active which is not the case of many who have not been here.
