Do you bite your finger nails?

I started like many when I was a lil kid biting my nails. I had broken the habit to a degree when I was in high school. Then by the time I was in my early 20's I had super long nails, natural ones too! But then I had kids and my oldest was a gagger and I always feared having to fish something out of her mouth w/o being able to feel it w/ having nails. So I've been biting again the past several years. And now that my girls love painting nails I'd love to quit biting again... but ya know it's such a bad habit especially during cold & flu season.
How bout you? ever bite them? Quit? Never a nail biter?

I'll only bite my nails when one breaks or is crooked, I bite it to straighten it out. Other than that I've never bitten my nails. But they're very brittle so they break easily.
My husband is a chronic nail biter. It drives me crazy too. He always does it without really thinking, usually when driving. Whenever I catch him I slap his hand and make him stop, at least for the moment. I'll never force him to break the habit though, and he doesn't care about it so he won't break the habit himself.

*LOL* Yeah my hubby would think I was nuts if I smacked his hand for doing that. He doesn't bite his though. Just to be gross while he's driving he'll pluck out a nose hair...

I've been a nail biter for a long time. When I was younger I was hopeless and my nails were always messed up it seemed. Then I started wearing nail polish almost all the time and I noticed if my nails were painted I didn't bite them.
I use colors that stand out and I'll see I'm about to bite my nails so I'll stop myself. My nails are now fairly long, plus I use a strengthener so I don't break them as much anymore either.

That stopped me too as far as painting beautiful colors & such on my nails. At one point I had a whole shoe box full of polish, stripers, gems ect.

This is one of the most interesting questions I've ever heard. Suprisingly, most of my friends do bite their nails and whenever I look at them, they are short, misplacesd, ugly fingernails. What's also a coinsidance is that no one in my family have ever bitten their nails, and they all look nice and "Normal". As for me, I have never bitten my nails,(not even my tonails, which I know some people do). And therefore today, I have nice long fingernails, not that I go and do my nails at a clinic, but they are all nice and symmetrical. Unfortunately, when my sister was young she used to bite both fingernails and toenails, but because I forced her, everytime I caught her, to stop biting them. Eventually after 10 months. she stopped and her fingernails are fine now.

Yeah isn't that gross with the toe nails? I knew a girl growing up who did that. But then my hubby's step nephew who is a few months younger than me as an adult is still limber enough to bite his toes! Hubby said when he lived w/ SIL that seeing his step-nephew do that just wigged him out cause it's so gross.

Well they do have some yucky tasting nail polish you can apply to your fingers, I believe it's clear. Perhaps that would help you?

i hate to admit to this bad habit. I just bit off all my nails. I never grew nails long in my life. After my surgery my nails just started growing so long. I am not use to feeling them. So I just bit the last one a few nights ago. My daughter (15) loves to paint my nails with designs. She gets hers done at the Chinese peoples places and comes home to do my nails. LOL she is so funny.

Enjoy that lil bit of Mommy & Daughter time even if you don't keep your nails long. I loved doing my nails when they were long. Except when I was pg cause the smell was just too intense for me and I was really sensitive to smells then.

Thank God I don't.
I was always told by my mom not to do it cuz its a bad habit but I never really did it much anyway. If you want to quit, I suggest just think of all bacteria on your fingers and nails (one of the best places for germs to hide) and then how sloppy people look when they do it.

I agree about the bacteria thing too. That's why I tell my oldest to refrain & especially refrain while she's in school. As she doesn't have the opportunity to wash her hands like I do and I'd rather her not bring a cold or virus home from the germ factory aka school ;0)

I never did that.... My mom made it a point that we didn't have that habit. I have just done it a few times, but it was never a regular habit. I just did it out of curiosity, since I watched other classmates do it sometimes. I just wanted to know how it feels...Ha ha ha.. It was so strenuous, I was wondering how do they enjoy it.
A couple of times, I had forgotten to cut my nails, and it was our inspection day, and I was very nervous as in what I should do. If they would see it, they would make me stand in front of the assembly or outside the class. So, very quickly out of fear, I just chewed on my nails as quickly as possible, and I did it to so much perfection that the teacher couldn't make out I had bitten on them. But she did make out with a couple of students they had bitten on their nails. Was just lucky a couple of times. But otherwise I never have this habit.

When I was very young I bit my fingernails but my teeth are aligned in such a way as it was difficult and now it's nearly impossible so I never developed a dedicated habit. I had my jaw realigned when I was 17 but over the years my bite has gone back to being misaligned enough that I can't bit my nails. See, there is a positive side to everything!

Nope... also, it's annoying as hell to hear people biting their nails then spitting them out.
And you can get all sorts of germs in your mouth by doing that. I've even heard you can get worms in your stomach for biting your nails.

yes, sometimes, but only if they are too annoying, maybe after cut them, they remain a bit strange and sharp, so i beat them to reduce this sharp edge and to make them round and smooth. Sometimes i beat them if i am nervous, maybe when i'm waiting for something. My friends beat his nails continuesly and thay started to be too much short and they hurt him.

I used to. I, as you, started as a really little kid. Even when I was a germ-o-phobic. I eventually made it a New Years resolution or something and I then finally stopped. It was really hard at first but, like most habits, as soon as I practiced a little self control - by taking my fingers out of my mouth as soon as I'd caught myself doing it - then it was easy. I've been over it for about a ten years now. lol

I used to do it when I was a child. I think most of us when we were children have certain habits and one of them is nail biting. But as we grow, we tend to outgrow them. Though there are other that still bring it with them up until now.

I never had that habit of biting my nails and I will never do it. I was brought up really well and never had so much of a bad habit thus never had a problem with those little things. My hubby though thus it all the time and since he is accustomed to it I get so mad because he keeps doing it over and over again.

I used to bite my nails all of the time when i was younger. Now I still bite my nails from time to time. I usuallly only do that now when I am nervous or anxious about something. It is a bad habit and worth breaking.

Very funny and quit interesting topic you have started. good to see this i really feel like answering to this topic.
usually i do not keep the nails but i dont eat them because i am very fussy about and i do care for hygne part. i dont like to put my nails in mouth because i accept the fact that the nails are full of germs.
