Is it really important to have nicknames?

I just wonder who's started using nicknames?Just pop out from my mind if it really necessary to be called by our nicknames.Would you rather choose to be called by your real names or your nickname?Well,its not very important but it's kinda interesting to me,especially that the first syllable of our real names is our nicknames.am I right?
