Do you believe asking questions in schools should be encouraged?

Hi friends, I remember when I was in school many a times the teacher used to get angry if some question was asked by the student, which really had created a impression in my mind that asking questions is not right but this conception changed when i entered college where all the students were encouraged to ask question as much as possible. I think that since childhood they should be trained to ask questions and they should get answered till the time they are not convinced so to develop a logical thinking in them. What are your thoughts?

asking questions is smart because you appear to be interested and want to learn all you can about a subject. if a teacher gets angry for questions being asked, i don't think that is a very good teacher.

i think that we should encourage students to ask questions.i find that abilty of understanding from students is very limited,so they need teacher's help and gain correct answer.as schools, their duty is to communicate knowlege and science to students and let them accept real knowlege,so i believe asking qestions in schools should be encouraged.

I think that teachers that don't like questions being directed at them, well, they are incompetent teachers in my view! It's important to ask questions in order to learn any particular subject. I'm studying right now and I sometimes get the impression that our lecturer does not like to be bothered with questions, he just wants to get through the material as quickly as possible! I was a little irritated by this and I actually had a word with my lecturer after class and told him that if I wasn't sure about something I would direct questions at him! There are a lot of really good teachers in the world but I think that teachers that don't like questions being directed at them well, they should be put in their place! Andrew

Sure, asking queasions should be encouraged! students who aks questions means he understood the meaning of what the teacher said. This doing should be credit. and as you say, if they were encourage from childhood, they will develop a logical thinking and maybe can do better than now.

When you are in school, questions should always be encouraged. When we ask questions as students, it is part of the learning process. We should never discourage the opportunity to learn. It may be something that will guide our lives.

I think asking questions is a positive thing. That demonstrates interest from the student's part, and can help the teacher to conduct the class, as he/she knows which are the points that the students understand less, for example. In my current school we're encouraged to ask questions, and I'm really glad we are. I think that it should be encouraged in all schools.

I've learned that Catholic elementary schools in Canada do not allow questions in religious studies. The reason being that the kids would ask embarrassing questions of the teacher which no one but a priest is qualified to answer. In Other words the students are being brain-washed by the Catholic Church which begins an indoctrination at age five that the Church intends to last forever.

It's what they encourage at school already, well at least for me anyways. There are some teachers nowadays that get angry at you if you don't ask until near exam time. It seems to have changed now from your time but it's the other way round for me.

Yes questions should be encouraged but they need to be relevent to whats being discussed. Where I went to school growing up, they insisted that we asked questions because its a normal part of learning. I remembe some teachers getting mad and inquries from students but it was always because they kids asked stuff that had nothing to do with school like "Mrs. Teacher, where did you buy your shoes?"

There is nothing wrong with asking questions in schools. You are there to learn and if you do not understand something then you should be able to ask more about that subject.

I think that all children should be encouraged to ask questions even while in college. Why not? If you don't understand something, then it is best to ask about it so that you can understand the assignment. Cause if you were to not ask a question then you fail, how do you know what have you done wrong and also you learn things from asking. When I was in school, I always scared and too shy to ask questions, but I think that maybe if I did I would have done alot better in school.

It is advisable that every students must encourage to ask questions and be confident with that. It is the only way they will learn the right thing. If one is suppressed to ask a question, he is deprived of the chance to clear his doubts or validate his facts. Asking questions is one way for the student to develop their logical reasoning and intuitive skills.:-) Hey, no offense meant with that teacher, but I often have this mind set that if a teacher stops you from throwing a question her way, she is either not knowledgeable and equipped enough to teach or she doesn't care about her students at all... Have a great day:-)

Hi there, maybe that teacher that you are referring is not competitive enough and doesn't know the subject that she was teaching, or lets just say no mastery of the subjects. There are two kinds of teacher, the teacher with the heart of a real teacher and a teacher with the heart of money. The teacher who teach because of his/her passion in teaching, that is the one who have the heart of a real teacher, and the teacher who teach only for salary, then that is the teacher who have the heart of money. Competitiveness, Quality, Commitment, Capability, efficiency and Effectiveness is a must for teachers and i think, the teacher that you were referring on this topic, doesn't have those. Before teaching in schools, a teacher needs to be a master of the subjects that he will teach, so that in the future, there will be no questions in his/her credibility. Asking questions is one effective way of educating students, not only students but also the teacher. We people need to remember that in classrooms the teacher and the students are the ones who are learning and exchanging of their thoughts and ideas. Not only the students, but of course the teacher also. I am a psychologist and at the same time, development education major, and it is one of the rules that i remember my mentors thought me, to have an effective learning, both teachers and students must have conversations and questioning, is one way of educational conversations. Also, seeing a student asking question means, the student is focused on the topic and willing to learn and that question must be answered all the time. If the teacher happens to be, doesn't have an idea of the subject, well she/he can give it as an assignment, so that the next morning, there will be an exchange of knowledge and intelligence. That is all i can share to you, have a great day!

yes, getting smarter is not a bad thing, asking questions usually gets you an answer. getting answers and learning makes things easier. thats what I think.

hi hireshd. i was once an instructor of a computer subject. honestly, there was one time when a student asked a question that i really dont know what the answer is. so to escaped embarrasment, i just told the class that that question is actually your assignment for tomorrow.and never did i got mad because the students are the ones paying to learn and its my duty to educate them correctly rather than getting mad and forgetting about the issue and it could even marked failure on my evalution.

Well the main reason why we go to school is of course to learn. So obviously if we have some doubts or questions then we should bring it up. I really do not see the logic why teachers should get angry if we ask a question. I do have encountered some teachers who do that. But most of the teachers that I had were all good and have always encouraged us to ask if we have doubts or if we want to clarify.

Asking questions in school by the students should be encouraged. Modern school is focused on cooperation and communication to connect students between them and the students with the teachers. It is like a network of a two-way communication. The purpose is to create a constructive environment in order to develop new abilities. This means that by free talk the purpose of education is achieved. And the teachers are really surprised sometimes at what their students are thinking or what question they are asking. But the teachers must be prepared for that!

asking question should be encouraged... i worked as a clinical instructor in one of our college here in our place and i really appreciate students who asked questions since it shows that the students are listening and are using their brains trying to analyze the things that are discussed. teachers or instructors who often/usually got angry when students ask questions are those teachers who come in class not prepared or does not have any idea about that certain subject....:)

I think it should be encouraged. First, you will know that the child is not asleep in class. Second, the child can develop confident in speaking out (When I was young, I always avoid asking questions and now, I always felt that I am still timid when doing presentation no matter how BIG or small the group is). However, I think it would be better for us to decide whether we would want to ask questions or not when we get much older. Because when I was in university, one of my lecturer kept forcing us to ask him questions and no one understand what his answer is. And thus, his lectures are most of the time, half filled.

Yes, I suppose so. Anyways, if you think about it, don't you think that parents are sending their children to school because they want them to learn and have a brighter future? And haven't you ever had your teacher tell you that you learn most by solving mistakes and asking questions? Yes. So in this case, I think all students, young or old, can learn things by asking questions. Me, personally, I find asking questions about things that I don't know or am not sure of helps me a lot in my studies as well as in life.
