Is this the Wave of the Future? 98-year old Woman Kills Roommate.

When I did not like the behavior of my college roomies, I just moved out. It never occurred to me to whack anybody. But check out this article: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/12/woman_98_charge.html Look at the picture of that attractive teddy bear in the arms of a 98-year old...murderer? The victim was 100! Do you think we will be seeing more of this kind of crime as the baby-boomers continue to mature and age? Apparently it was all over who got to live closer to the window. What would you do if you were 98 and your 100 year old roommate got the window?

I actually heard it was about the 98 year old being annoyed because the 100 year old got a lot of visitors. Apparently, the victim was very popular. The family of the 100 year old tried to get her moved to another room because of the 98 year old, but was told that the two were getting along fine.

How sad. Usually I prefer to promote happier stories, but I thought this one was rather unusual...at least I hope so.

I think the real problem is the shortage of trained staff in many, if not most, nursing homes. I doubt this was the first problem these two women had so it should have been addressed and one of them should have been reassigned. Unfortunately, the problems associated with caring for the elderly may get worse as budget cuts impact on the care the residents receive.

Yes, in fact the victim had called the staff about an irregularity the night before this happened, and the 98-year old lashed out at the staff member at that time, which should have put them on alert.

I would pray she be smitten by a cool breeze, catch pneumony and die. I do not know. I think age just accentuates whatever is there already. Reasonable people will continue to be reasonable, and the unreasonable may just chuck out all inhibitions and do whatever comes the handiest.

It would be awful if they opened the windows this time of year! The problem, I guess, is that some of the really old people do not have a choice of moving to a better place. They are sort of at everyone's mercy.

That is true, and I was being facetious. I have worked in many nursing homes, in many capacities. For what residents pay, they could live on a cruise ship and have a lot more fun.

Age will also make reasonable people unreasonable sometimes. For that matter, how much punishment can you really dole out on someone who simply doesn't have that long to live?

Hi drannhh OH WOW..That is crazy. I know if I lived with someone when I reach that age then to me it's not worth it to fight with anyone at that age. Shoot that window wouldn't mean that much to me. I just give it up and hope that I could get a peak every now and then. Thanks for sharing this story with us. I for one hadn't heard about it and now it is just mind blowing to me. Have a nice day and keep smiling.

What I'm wondering is what good does it do to convict any 98 year old of murder? "Listen lady, you're sentenced to 40 years in prison!" I don't think you can really punish any one at that age - they don't have much further to go, they've lived out their life, and even the victims family feels sorry for the lady.

cscushman, welcome to myLot! Apparently the wife's intention was to end her husband's suffering, but it seems she made it worse by trying to "play God."

Uggh, I don't know how anyone could do that to the one they've spent their entire life with! There's so many sad things that occur in this world, I can't even imagine how many there are that we don't hear about!

This story is kind of sad, really. I mean to whack someone, especially because of that particular reason, ewww.. If I were in that situation, I'd just keep quiet. Or worst off, if I'm really in a cranky mood, I would nag. Being old and naggy, that's permissible, isn't it..

I don't know. I sort of look forward to being old and cheerful, but I would not want to have to have a roommate. I've worked really hard all my life to try to avoid ever being in that situation, but you know what they say about what sometimes happens to the best-laid plans. It just seems to be there should be more value put on life than for people to end up like either of those women. And truly, they probably had it a lot better than most of the elderly people in the world today.

You are so right, drannhh. Sometimes being safe and grateful are more better. In most cases, that is. I always feel safe with my family around. But just in case they aren't around anymore, I'll be brave to live alone.

Hey drannhh! This story really disturbs me! This woman was sane enough to plan a pre-meditated murder and will get away with it because she is 98 years old! If this was someone younger they would be charged with murder! So the fact that she is 98, and probably not in her right mind she will get away with murder! Sorry, still doesn't sit right with me! Didn't someone know at this facility that something was severely wrong and these two women should be separated! I do blame the facility!

Isn't this just terrible?! It's hard to believe that a 98 year old woman would have the strength to kill anybody. She was definitely out of her mind in my opinion. She needs to be in a mental institution, not prison, because of her age, I would think. I go to sing for patients in a nursing home once a month and I see so many whose minds are bad. The article said that her mind would go and come so there's no telling what was going on in her mind at the time. I'm sure the 100 year old got on her nerves a lot but she didn't have to strangle her! I sure hope we won't see any more crimes like this! Kathy.

It seems likely that is where she will end up, and life will be much worse for here there, I suspect. Yes, such a shame.

I am afraid drannhh that on the next morning you will come to know from your concerned neighbors or the same article or the news paper that it is not because of the window but because of the fact "to be in the limelight" and get his or her name in the genius book of records BUT ALL FOR WRONG REASON at this juncture of life......and this is what is more terrifying. The last part of your question......If I would have been there I would have love to sit beside the 100 year old roommate and enjoy the sight from the window and would have take pride off the fact that we have crossed the age of 98 and 100. Keep smiling.

If I ever had to have a room mate I would surely want one like you and not one like her. Still it is sad to think we have elderly people who live in rooms so small they do not have enough windows for everyone.

LOL these days every one takes every thing so seriously that they would end up killing them and i am shocked to read that article what made her to kill a Elder roommate about a small issue she must be really sick or the other reason beind this must have molested her .instead of helping others and guiding younger ones with her experience she commits a crime at 98.Now the main news would be "for how many years this old Grand ma would be sentenced for" ? gud day.

It just makes me wonder sometimes what direction our world is headed. Elderly people are the last people you would suspect to do something like this. But, just like our younger folk they are people. As humans we are capable of a lot of things even murder despite our age. Of course I question how much the story was over-exaurated. Rememinds me of when I saw a news report about an elderly woman being arrested because her car was "blocking" trafic. When in reality it wasn't, apparently the cop that arrested her must have been in one serious bad mood. I mean who really is "that" stupid? Nevermind.... human kind is....
