I wouldn't be offended, but I think it's stupid to correct somebody's English, unless they are asking you to correct it. It's okay to politely say it, I guess, but I think, especially online, people are just trying to write what they mean and don't want to spend to much time going over every detail.
Sometimes, though, if somebody is saying something that doesn't mean what they think it does, it would be okay to correct them. I would want to know if I was saying something that doesn't make sense. But, people shouldn't correct simple grammar mistakes, you should just let it go.

I think it makes sense in that it is only when one does not understand what is written that one should go about seeking clarification.

Yeah, I think people who see errors would be embarrassed at correcting them. I always admire anyone who masters another language, especially English - no way am I gonna teach my grandmother to suck eggs!

hi,allknowing, may i ask a question:do you know all the things in the world?lol~~
well,as to your discussion,my answer is NO,for i would rather welcome it.
to take it or not,is another question.but i wouldn;t feel offended.i have reason as follows:
first,i do need improvement on english.second, people who corrected me here just spoke out what they think were right.and i should be grateful, for that they don't have the responsibility to do that.third, there is no absolute right or wrong in the case of language.we are here to communicate.so just be more tolerant~~

What you have said that there is no absolute right or wrong in a language is not correct. It is either right or wrong. Anyway if you approach any of your friends here who write well he/she will surely help you.

i have had people comment on different ways i write here and it doesnt bother me. i dont always put upper case when i should and dont spell that well at times. anyway, i dont chatise anyone for their english as i feel they are still learning. i know english only and still mess up i dont want anyone to be offended so i usually just answer what i can understand.

Not all like being corrected. And as long as one understands what is written it seems fair that one does not bother about pointing out ones spellings and grammar!

It would be grateful if someone correct my grammar mistake here. Since my English is not so good, this is the best way to improve my English by MyLotting. Is better we learn from mistake, and correct it. If someone try to mention about my mistake, it will remind me not to repeat again. I totally agree with this activity. Have a nice day :)

I would be very thankful. English is not my native language and I make many mistakes. But of course, a comment to a post´s answer can´t just be about how a word is spelled. Take care!

Hi, Allknowing! I won't be offended if my English is corrected here because I am here to learn and earn . However, the person who is correcting my English must be someone who has wide knowledge in this language and does not based on slang or someone who thinks s/he is right, but since members are not allowed to comment on other members' English as stipulated in the guidelines, so, I don't think it will happen in a discussion.

I did not quite notice this guideline. I also agree with you that accepting corrections from someone you think knows the subject well is reasonable.

There is a number of things you have to consider;
1. Is it a typo error, and hasn't been noticed..
2. Maybe, someone prefers to speak in Text speak on the internet or, on these forums, as its easier and quicker.
3. Or, they may have , made a general mistake, but
personally, Im not a fan of being corrected, even though, not so much on the internet as a whole, Idont correct, normally its when people speak. Eitherway, it should in some cases be encouraged.

Learning is a very good habbit and there is no age bar for that. I want to learn and like to learn till my last day. You can get corrected in this way and it is good for your pogress in language. So I do not at all feel offended by corrections and in fact thank the person for correcting me.

I wouldn't be offended. I'm always willing to learn.
Having said that, mmy English is usually pretty good; though sometimes, I slip on the grammar! I know that there are many MyLotters form whom English is not their first language...
I don't "correct" people, as I think it's unfair (knowing how awful my foreign language skills are!) - but would people actually appreciate an opinion?

It would be nice if people took it in the right spirit but not many would like them being corrected!

Hi. English is not my mother tongue. So I would be thankful to anybody who could help me improve my written English. I would not be offended because I know that I'm prone to committing mistakes as English is a foreign language to me.
But of course, it would depend on how the other person corrected my mistake. If it was done by way of "bad/sarcastic criticism," I may not voice out my disappointment but I will surely be hurt. Based on my nature, however, it would still encourage me to do better. I'll show that person that I could improve...that I could do better.

Being corrected is not an issue for me. I can take any corrections with my English or other skills as long as it is stated nicely, not to humiliate me as if I'm dumb. I'm thankful whenever I get corrected that way, so I could improve on where I'm weak at and not be an embarassment to myself and to other people.

Trying to prove that you are 'dumb' would surely be a mean thing to do. But I doubt if anyone would do that!
