How do you dump a friend?

As time goes by, we will see a friend clearer, so the friend list would be shorter and shorter. But how, how do you dump a friend? For me I would reduce the frequence of contact, find some excuse to avoid go out or talk with that person, just let time water this friendship down, what would you do to dump a friend?
