I was walking around town and I ventured into some shopping malls to say hi to some of my colleagues who work there , and I noticed the many new red and white paintings of Christmas colors which is cool , given that "ti's the season to be jolly".
What really caught my eye was the many displays of Joseph and Mary holding a "white baby Jesus" on their manger with some folks (the wise men) looking at them with what resembled gold and frankincense.
So I asked one of my buddies jokingly , "Why does the baby have to be white? after all Mary had an immaculate birth , who decided the baby was to be white? , was it God , genetics etc?" Then for the first time I saw my buddy stop to think for a while ..lol which rareley happens and then with a seious look on his face he looked back at me and said "I have no idea , what does it say in the bible lol" , I left the conversation at that having no satisfactory answer , but now I decided to ask here.
How many people have ever seen a black baby Jesus during Christmas and who decided that baby Jesus was white to begin with?

Jesus probably did have dark skin but the artists that have painted him have always painted him as light skinned. They also portray him as a very handsome man, but the bible tells us that he was not comely. Isaiah 53:2 says For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. Those that painted his portrait did not study their bible before they painted him.
We usually surround ourselves with what is familiar and that is probably why you din't see dark skinned baby Jesus. But since he was born in the middle east He should be much darker than he he is in the Nativity scenes.

I have seen this before, and it is really a disgrace...I am not saying that Jesus is white. I think the Bible says somewhere that his skin was more of a tanned tone...I would think that since Jesus was born and grew up in the Middle Eastern region of the world, He would have looked similar to the other people of the region...

I cant say I have ever seen a black baby Jesus. I suspect that the "white" baby Jesus originates from the fact that Jesus came from Mary and Joseph, or wer Jews, and Jews were kind of white, well olive skinned I think.Over the centuries a lot of rasicm is involved.
Many years ago, when my step daughter was around 5 or 6, we found out that she had rejected a child in her class to be on her sports team because she was black. I was furious. My daughter would never have done that. So we told her that we would get her a lovely black doll for Christmas. She was adamant she didnt want one.
The irony if it, is that even though we are considerd "white", in fact both our families have Aboriginal heritage, and it shows in my step daughter.
