My boyfriend and I are getting two baby girl sugar gliders at the end of the week. For a lot of people they see cute little squirrels that could be great companions. And thats all they see, I was on a website the other day and a bunch of uninformed people were talking about how they were going to get a sugar glider for someone for Christmas. This is a huge mistake. Most people who want a sugar glider don't see how much time and care these creatures need. These little guys have a life span of up to 18 years. That's A LOT of time, also they don't see the care needed for them. First off there aren't that many vets that see sugar gliders and the ones that due make you pay a fortune. It's just really frustrating when people take in animals not thinking of the consequences...good or bad. What's your opinion on people who buy animals for the here and now?

Great discusion. I share similar thoughtslike this with reptiiles. Someone will get a lizard or snake and then treat it like an animated decoration. they think you toss it in a tank ans throw food at it. Like your sugar glider case, they don;t realize the detailed care involved. and the larger the retile species, the longer they live. Some larger pythons or boas, and monitor lizards can live 30 years or more. Large turtles can outlive YOU.
Each species has it's own range of temperature and humidity levels nessesary for long life. Diet can be a night mare sometimes, you have to provide a variety to simulate what it gets in nature, a very complex variety.
A lot of folks don't realize the danger with some species. They will get a baby monitor which can evetualy grow to over 7 feet and ar4e capable of taking your hand off or a Tegu that can get to 6 feet and is also very dangerous. Some pythons can get over 18 feet and weigh 600 pounds or more. And people will handle these larger snakes by themselves.
Anyway, again, awesome discusion! cheers!
