OK. My daughter is really passionate about animals. She has come to realize that she wants to help animals somehow for a living, but I dont know if being a vet or anything like that would be good for her because she gets so emotional about it.Do you know any careers that deal with animals that would be good for her maybe??NO circuses, pet stores, or zoos!!!

That is a career that involves animals where it is ok and maybe a good thing to be an emotional person.

She could be an ASPCA officer or work in a humane society shelter or something like that, although that may be too emotional too. :/ I'm sure there's lots of careers that have to do with animals out there other than vets. I'd check at my local library for books on this, or maybe even ask a local vet about other animal careers.

Yeah, I think even working with animal charities would be a little emotional for her.I know how she feels about the ASPCA after the dog Oreo as well and that wouldn't go okay. Good idea about checking the local library though!! Thanks for your help!! It's appreciated!!:)

How about a "Naturalist" for the Park system? They get to handle the animals, talk to visitors about their habitats and preservation, and go on nature walks, go to schools (alot of elementary) to lecture and visit, etc. I think it's a wonderful career and can take her to into different fields also, even marine life if she'd like.

I am looking for similar work myself and I can relate to the emotional side of becoming a vet. I recently had to have my beautiful 13 year old cat put to sleep because he was very sick and the vet there told my husband that sometimes she has to do up to ten euthanasias in one day! That would emotionally kill me and I know I couldn’t watch a pet die with detachment. I am considering opening a cattery where cat owners can bring their beloved feline when they go on holidays etc, you know like a cat hotel. We have a few in my city and they seem to be doing quite well. I can’t afford to open one from scratch so I may have to wait until one comes up for sale and that could unfortunately be a while. If I win the lottery I will build a cattery and an animal shelter...No harm in dreaming... I hope your daughter finds something, if I come up with anything else I will let you know.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. My daughter had to put her cat down when she was little. He had feline leukemia. No way my daughter could do ten euthanasias, let alone one!! I don't think I could either. There are people who can numb themselves, but my daughter is not one of them! She is the type of person who will have to take a hurt duck home if it can't fly or a bird that is sick or a cat that's suffering outside.A cattery? I've never heard that word before, but it sounds like a good idea :) No there is no harm in dreaming. ALl realities were built on dreams!!!

In a lot of careers it's helpful to have some emotional feelings towards your work it can keep you motivated. I think if your daughter wants to be a vet. Support her with it. If she does become a vet she will eventually know how to handle and channel those emotions so it doesn't hurt her work.

I would definitely support her if that's what she wanted, but she herself is afraid of getting too emotional to be a vet. She never wants to have to euthanize any animal or anything. She is the type of person who even if you tell her to calm down, she probably won't. It's not a bad thing!! She just will never stop worrying about the animals; there is no teaching her to stop worrying. (According to her she agrees with that).
