Yes America is sick. And the disease is called "Congress". I found this online. It is not my original writing, It is also not original to the blog I found it on. I guess the idea is to spread it around. I figured myLot is a good way to promote ideas. So leave your comments and then email it to everyone you know. Or even better, send them a link and have them leave a comment.
Zacko-
THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!*
*I am sending this to virtually everybody on my e-mail list and that includes conservatives, liberals, and everybody in between. Even though we disagree on a number of issues, I count all of you as friends. The proposal is to promote a “Congressional Reform Act of 2009.”
It would contain eight provisions, all of which would probably be strongly endorsed by those who drafted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
I know many of you will say, “this is impossible.” Let me remind you, Congress has the lowest approval of any entity in Government, now is the time when Americans will join together to reform Congress – the entity that represents us.
We need to get a Senator to introduce this bill in the US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill in the US House. These people will become American heroes.. Please add any ideas on how to get this done.
Thanks,
A Fellow American*

*_Congressional Reform Act of 2009_**

1. Term Limits: 12 years only, one of the possible options below.
A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms*
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
*2. No Tenure / No Pension:
A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.*
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
*3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security:
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people.*
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, server your term(s), then go home and back to work.
*4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all Americans*..
[i]Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

*5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.*
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
*6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
* Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
*7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people..

*
8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/10.
The American people did not make this contract with congressmen, congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.*

Sent to me by a friend. Stand up “We the People” need to clean The House and Senate. I might add One six year term for the President so that four years are not wasted on getting re elected.

Obviously, the American people would vote these proposals into law if given the chance. Too bad we don't have even one Congressman or Senator willing to at least propose this as law.

I think that's THE single-most important point that can be made here: The American people would vote for it, but Senators and Congresspeople wouldn't.
That tells you everything you need to know about the divide going on with politicians and the public. And it also speaks volumes about exactly why these types of laws would be put in place for politicians in the first place.

I saw Pat Cadell, advisor to Carter, on TV last week and he said "the gov't better listen because the people are furious and they're coming after-guess who? YOU!!" He's right. We as a nation are getting angrier by the day, sick of being taxed without representation, forced to obey laws we would never have voted in and angry about watching our country go down the drain so that a few men and women can get power and money. And we're sick of watching our Constitution being trampled on and laughed at.
They'd better watch it. America is reaching the boiling point!

I agree with this. The problem is, as Americans we have given up our rights to the people we elect. Absolute power creates absolute corruption. In order for this to happen, the American People have to wake up and stop voting for the name they know, and vote in new names and faces in to these offices. Time is ripe for a new political party for Americans, not for themselves.

Also I want to add that I also believe that all political offices should be limited to two terms. Every seat just like the president should be limited to two terms. The way congress seats for life, creates absolute corruption. 12 years is too long.

I have attended a few TEA Parties and one topic that always comes up is term limits. When you look at the number of elected officials who retire in the Boston to Washington DC belt and never go back to the people they represented it is disturbing. It is also disturbing to see the number of elected officials who have never held a real job, all their career has been in public "Service". Look at the US Attorneys who are more concerned with a conviction rate than curbing real crime, because their goal is to get elected to public office.
We should demand that those running support term limits.

I agree wholeheartedly with that! Also that if they pass a health care bill, Congress MUST participate! That will ensure they don't screw us over once again--maybe.
We have gotten SO far away from what the founders intended that they wouldn't recognize this country. One of them said "we've given you a republic--if you can keep it" and we've let it go in favor of tyranny with no representation.
I've gotten that email and passed it on with a copy to my representatives. Not that they read it. But I wrote to them all, a real letter since they have people that press the delete button all day, and told them I was firing them next term because they were stealing the heritage I meant to leave my children.
I don't agree with a 6 year prez term, though. Can you imagine 6 years of the present administration?! After 4, we might be able to dig out in a few decades but if he had 6 we'd be well and truly ruined.

Whatever, I want all politicians including Mr President really working for the people and concentrate on economy building; short, mid, and long term planning. Politicians in this new era of 2010 must work in creative ways and highly innovative.
