getting Spiritual

I have an aquatance who is in prison. I have known him since he was born and a few years back he did some stuff and it finally caught up with him and he is now serving time. We recieved a letter from him recently that said he was "becoming spiritual in prison." He did not expand on exactly what that meant so I wanted some feedback from the folks here, those with and without faith as to what you think he means. Any ideas?
