One day I will have to replace my desktop computer as it is getting on a bit (8 years old) so I know it is not going to last forever. I do know that desktop computers are a bit old-fashioned nowadays soo..my question is mentioned above. Which is best?
I know that laptops have been around the longest and that the other 2 are smaller, but apart from the size is there an advantage of netbooks and notebooks over a laptop? My current computer is used - mainly for browsing the internet. I have learned not to download all the time, such as videos and photos although I would need a computer for the latter, and one that can play games..not elaborate role-playing games but basic Match-3, puzzles, that kinda thing.
It really is confusing! Can anyone shed some light on the advantages and disadvantages of all 3, bearing in mind I won't be able to understand a technical answer. :-0 My current flat screen monitor is 15" so I would not like a screen any smaller than that.

The advantages of a PC is it's durability, PC are able to work nonstop for several days for example. because it had fans all over it. on the processor, vga, casing, and it got more room to release the heat. I will chose PC as my main workstation also because PC will easily done multitasking operational. I can play my favourite games in PC without lagging. Even if I want to watch High Definition Movie on my PC, it will running smoothly. Not to mention that PC is easily upgraded part by part. The storage of PC is usually bigger than any other type you mention.
The disadvantages is of course it's size. You can't just brought along your PC anywhere. :)
The difference between laptop, notebook and netbook is basically about their size. laptop using wider monitor than the others. But, the bigger monitor the more power consumed, so it will drain batteries faster. Laptop and notebook usually had dvd rom on it, so it will help you to install software needed. Among the three netbook is the smallest one. so it will stay longer with it's batteries. and usually netbook doesn't has dvd rom.
If you're looking for the most easily carried anywhere, then i will suggest a netbook. you can browsing anywhere, doing a little work on that. but, for me i don't think it's fun to look at little monitor on netbook for a long time.
If i have to choose between laptop, notebook and netbook. i will simply choose notebook for my secondary workstation, it's compact enough, has a dvd rom, not too little monitor to look at.

How fascinating! I am beginning to understand the differences between the three a little clearer now. Unfortunately, here in the UK ALL computers seem to be expensive unless you go for something really cheap and horrible that will probably break down really quickly. Thanks for your insight into a complicated subject, it is much appreciated.

well, if buy a built in PC from famous brand it will surely be expensive. Try to built one, it will perform better with cheaper cost. From my experience, all kind of PC can be assembled by ourself, but to build laptop, notebook and netbook is not easy at all. The space available is limited, so we have to be very careful if we want to adding parts or something.
In building your own PC, i suggest you to invest more money on motherboard/mainboard and processor. you won't regret on that decision. and usually the memory part (RAM) is guaranteed by the vendor for lifetime. :)

Laptop is a desktop on your lap. It can have the same performance as desktop. Hence, you can use it for big programs like cads, photoshops, video edit, acad and others. It got high specs but heavy.
Netbook, as the name states, is only best used for net browsing. It has poor specs but very light and easy to carry.
Notebook is made for taking down notes. It is usually made for students in exchange for a pen and a notebook. Specs are ok but not as good as a laptop and it is also easy to carry around.
Those are my own description for those :D

Thanks for your response and I am glad that you are all saying the same things, otherwise I'd be even more confused than before lol. To risk repeating myself I am definitely drawn to a laptop more than any other device so I'm hoping Sony will carry on making them!

Go for laptop. you can use laptop in this things that you've mention in your introductory messege especially you dont like screen that is smaller than 15". Also you can play games, browsing, and word processing. The only disadvantage for laptop is it is bulky or not so mobile compare to netbook and Notebook.
Netbook is not so powerful like of laptop.
Notebook I dont know much about it but I know it is more like a netbook.
Base on your needs as you said earlier. Buy Laptop.
The technology in Desktop computers is too fast. Your 8 years old desktop computer is absolite already and you will have a hard time to find parts for replacements.

At least with my desktop computer I was able to upgrade which is why I would not buy a cheaper model, whatever I choose next. You make a good point about the laptop as regards screen size and - to be honest - the way I would transport it around would be in my husband's car, from our house here to Mum's 100 miles away. Therefore, I would not need a smaller computer. After reading all the responses so far it is reinforced my desire to buy a laptop in future. Gotta get a job first though, lol. :-)

Hm, from what I know, Laptop and notebook actually are the same. Notebook is just newer term that become more popular than laptop nowadays. But maybe on old days, Laptop still not use a mobile processor (Celeron M, Core Duo, Core Solo, Centrino, etc), hence they have to adapt it with big size and heavy size. The performance? Well, notebook seems to be better now with newer technology. Netbook? it certainly have different purpose. Netbook is meant to be a lightweight and more flexible. To accomodate this they use different kind of processor (Intel Atom) which is smaller in size so they can fit smaller machine. The performance also different, since the processor is smaller (with current technology) then it is not as capable as mobile processor like Celeron M, Core duo, etc.
Well, if I sum up it can be like this.
1. Laptop is a term for a computer that can be carried everywhere (versus of Desktop computer which should be put on top of the desk).
2. Notebook and netbook are type of laptop, they vary in size. Notebook from 10.8" to 15" wide while netbook from 7" to 10"
3. Main difference of notebook and netbook is it processor. Netbook use atom processor (smaller) while notebook use mobile processor. processor like Intel Pentium are rare and unlikely will be available in future laptop.
4. Netbook and notebook also differ in usage. As in it name, netbook mainly use to surf the net so they are not equipped with high spec hardware (HD, RAM, VGA Chipset, etc)
If you really want to play game, pick laptop with better equipped VGA Chipset. Usually from ATi, don't use Intel GMA Chipset because it sucks :p

I have a desktop computer with an Intel Pentium 4 processor in it which gives you an idea how old it is. Still going strong though! Unfortunately, I cannot take it to Mum's as it is too big and I would have to re-activate broadband there, which is why I want something I can take to and fro lol. I would need a machine where I could plug in one of those sticks which gives mobile access to broadband. This is something I forgot to mention in my first post so forgive me for that. I would like a screen big enough for my Mum to look at whilst sat next to me because the internet fascinates her, and the bigger the screen, the more the pair of us will be able to see. I do know that screens do vary. Some are anti-glare, some are not. This Sony monitor I am looking at now has never decreased in brightness for 8 years and has never, ever given me a headache. Perhaps I should stick to Sonys as they make great televisions too.

Hi! I was reading some of the responses here and was a bit shocked to know that some are really confused, not to mention the misleading discussion title.
A Netbook and a Notebook are both called laptops - basically because you put them on your lap.
A notebook is..well..correctly defined by others here..while a netbook is a slimmed down version of a notebook specifically designed for lighter tasks like surfing or encoding. Thus, a netbook has less processing power and capability as compared to a laptop.

Very true...
I have a netbook, and I find that it is great for web browsing but when it comes to games or even running a few programs at once (chat, internet, media player) thn it starts to slow down..
But it was great to use while travelling as it is so small it would fit into any sized backpack or even half the ladies handbags nowadays..
Choose what you want after considering what you will use it for..

The difference between Laptops, Netbooks and Notebooks are:
1. A Laptop is designed to sit on you lap (hence the name) so it is loaded with many extra features and a lot of power. Laptops can actually match the speed of some desktops. Laptops are used as portable desktops (depending on the one you buy. some of them are great but others are... not so good). Laptops are used for intense gaming with 3D graphics and such.
2. A Netbook is similar to a laptop except you sacrifice power for portability. Netbooks are extremely light and small so they are easy to take around. Netbooks are used for basic internet browsing and word processing.
3. A Notebook is a mix between a Laptop and a Netbook. Notebooks are portable but they also have power. It is not as powerful as a Laptop and also not as portable as a Netbook.
The main difference between the three are: Laptops - Lots of power, used for intense gaming, Notebooks - Average power, used as a media player, Netbooks - Little power, used for word processing and basic internet browsing.
Companies often use these terms interchangeably so you should look at the system specs.
Laptop= Huge display, lots of memory and fast cpu.
Notebook= Average size display, average memory, average cpu (everything is normal)
Netbook= Really small display, little memory, micro cpu

I think a laptop would be the best for my needs. My father-in-law has a laptop but, more often than not, he has it on the dining-room table plugged in so it's not using up its battery. I have heard that all these smaller machines, no matter which one you go for, is not the same as having it in front of you on a desk, as there are neck problems for many users from leaning over the machine. Is it getting to the stage whereby laptops will be more or less obsolete like the desktop computers? That is the only thing that frightens me as I am not attracted to the smaller netbooks and notebooks at all. The reason my desktop computer has lasted this long is that I was able to upgrade its memory.

Hi there,
My opinion is as below.
Laptop VS Netbook:
Advantage of Laptop: the funtion provided by laptop is the same as PC. Actually it's a tiny PC. But Netbook will only provide you the basic function such as browsing Internet and editing your doc.
Disadvantage of Laptop: Laptop is bigger than Netbook, and Laptop is much more expensive than Netbook;

Laptop - is a personal computer designed for mobile use and small and light enough to sit on person's lap while in use.
Netbook - also called mini notebooks or ultra portable. Are a branch of subnotebooks, a rapidly evolving category of small, light, inexpensive laptop computers suited for general computing and accessing web based application.
Notebook - also known as a laptop designed for mobile use small enough to sit on one's lap.
