I am fairly new to myLot and I still have yet to get my footing, so I thought I'd put this out there to the writing community here. Do you discriminate against discussions that are started using high quantities of spelling and grammar problems? Do most of the grammar problems come from laziness, lack of education, or people who are still learning English? How do you cope with the grammar and spelling issues here at myLot.com?

Hi! I notice a lot of spelling and grammatical errors here, too, and perhaps I, myself, have even made some. However, I don't make corrections since most of them are not from English-speaking countries. I'm also new here and I'm not really sure how to comment on those errors and how they'd take it especially if they've been active here for a long time. I usually ignore those questions.

I always try to write excellent English - it's my job. But I don't discriminate against those who write meaningful discussions with poor SPAG - they've made more of an effort than I have, with my sub-grade 3 level French and nowt else!
I do get annoyed with those who write tons of 1 sentence posts to get bucks (or so they believe) and write poor English. Generally, it's not their English skills, but laziness - they just want to rattle posts off as quickly as possible. I pass on those, and generally give them a negative rating, too. But I've + rated people who have been difficult to understand, but made a valid effort to get their point across.

I usually just look over typo's and grammatical errors because I've been on this site long enough that most of the people who do this kind of stuff regularly are the ones I respond to the most... I don't even notice it, or if I do I just chock it up to another error, I've done plenty myself so why fret I say!
Unless it's really bad then I cringe and correct, of course with being polite.

Thanks for your response. I don't mind a few errors and I'm sure I make them myself. I was wondering more about those that are "really bad". You say that you correct them, does this go over well? What advice do you have for how to correct people? Do you think it is because they either haven't been taught enough English, or that their English education was insufficient?

I'm careful in that I don't correct the person unless they have really bad english or I know they won't mind... and even so I go about it easy like so that I don't offend.
The best thing to do is to say, "I noticed your making a lot of errors" or ask "Did you mean this and not that?" etc.

Thanks for the advice. You mentioned that you make sure they want the advice first. Is this because you make friends with them, so you know? Or do you ask them first? I like the tactic of asking, "Did you mean this?" as a form of clarification. Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to MyLot!
I've been writing on MyLot for a little while now and one thing that I have learned is that the people who write on here are from everywhere in the world. Many of these people do not utilize English as their main language and MyLot requires us all to use English.
Therefore, there are many brave people out there that try the best they can to communicate on MyLot and I'm sure sometimes it is aggravating as I know it can be for us American writers who are used to correct spelling and grammar. You just have to remember that MyLot is not Associated Content, Helium or a school. They do not require proper spelling and grammar. We just need to be patient with those people whom are brave enough to struggle with our English language.
I hope you come to love MyLot as much as I have!
Happy MyLotting!
Char

Just keep responding to their discussions - it's what I do, and I've made some great friends here because of it.

Thank you very much for your response. Are there any recommendations you have for me as a new myLotter for how to support these brave individuals?

I usually just overlook the grammar and spelling errors on discussion. I make mistakes myself because I get in a hurry and even after reading my respond a few times I will still miss my mistakes.

Hi. I don't mind reading discussions with several spelling or grammatical errors. I myself is not perfect so why should I pick on other people's mistakes? I believe that most people here on myLot are not native English speakers. And we have different levels of written English proficiency. Like me, I believe that most people here are still learning and trying to improve their English proficiency skills on a continuous basis. So it's just a matter of respect and understanding for others.

If I would be the recipient of your constructive feedback, I would appreciate it dearly. I really want to improve my English proficiency level and I'll gladly welcome any help from others. I'm particularly confused with the proper usage of prepositions and participles.
I'm not sure if such is also OK for other myLotters. If the feedback for improvements is delivered in a respectful manner, I believe others would understand and even appreciate your efforts. To be safe, I would suggest that you do the correcting by sending a private message to the person/s involved so as not to hurt their ego.

Thank you for your response. It is good to know that most users are not native English speakers. I really welcome your advice. Do you think I should help users to correct their English or should I just let them to passively learn as they go?

I try not to worry about it much. I can usually make out what people are asking about. I feel that it makes them a part of the community. We must help out the less able speakers and writers among ourselves.

I don't get bothered by it unless the person in guestion has started using all capitals. Or capitalizing ever word or something else blatantly trying to grab attention. I don't usually pay much attention to my own grammar, this is the internets after all. But I try to spell things right and since firefox has built in spell-check I really have no excuse. Although I'll point out I spelled internets like that intentionally. For those people who can't stand poor spelling... I think they need to go find some Chaucer. Most people here manage to spell better than him. ;p

Hi, Rose_Allen. I will not really pay it any attention. I don't discriminate against any discussion that has bad grammar or misspelled words. I think that many grammar errors come from people that actually have a very hard time of spelling words. I would think that if they misspelled a word that they would go back and correct it. If I see something misspelled I will just ignore it and continue to read it. It really does not bother me at all.

sometimes it is a little bothersome considering grammar and spelling are pretty much the only two things I'm good at, but you tend to get used to it unfortunately...does make me worry about the kind of education our kids are getting, not that I have any kids, and I do realize that there are a number of people out there with dyslexia, which makes it even harder for them to read and spell, like my Dad for instance.

I think your English is excellent! And well done you, for making the effort to learn one of the hardest languages in th world! Wish I was half as clever ...

I first consider the source. If it seems to me it is someone whose native tongue is not English then I take that into consideration. Intent of content is also what I look for. If they're just posting sloppy to earn some quick change, I move on to something else unless otherwise directed by God.
In some cases it does come from laziness or lack of education. Nonetheless, I have heard it said the English language is one of the most difficult to learn.
Sad to say, I have seen errors in news copy, including Associated Press.
I think all should try to do their best.

Literacy is a basic skill. If someone rites like dis then, unless they have dyslexia or are still learning English as a second language, I'm gonna have a damn go at them.I see a lot of adults who have English as their main language yet can't even write it properly. It's pathetic. Every time I get a letter from my school, for example, I can read it and pick out at least one glaringly obvious error in each paragraph. These are people who are employed to write letters, it's part of their job, and they can't even use the English language properly.
I'm not saying I don't make mistakes or anything - everyone does - but if I made an error in my writing, I'd appreciate someone correcting it. I wouldn't get angry about it; I'd accept I made a mistake, thank the person who noticed it, move on, and hopefully not make the same mistake in the future.

Everybody make a mistake, it is generally acceptable here in Mylot. But as a responder in order for your respond to be understand by everyone you have to spell check the words and check on the grammars too. I am not good in english, I use words that for me can clearly understand by my reader. I haven't seen any discussion that a person attacking a person because of her/his spelling or wrong grammar. People her can understand english , they do not criticize everyones english because they know we came from different country. But of course you have to check and edit your post before submitting it. Sometimes due to eagerness of some of us to respond to a discussion we do not do it, but I guess it is still necessary.

We all come from different backgrounds, education levels and all over the world. I almost always can understand what a person is trying to say and if I can't...I ask. I would never judge anyone on here for spelling or grammar. I can tell when someone is delibartly misspelling such as when they use the word "dat" instead of "that" and "dem" instead of "them". Now that irritates me but I still ignore it and just respond to what the discussion is about.

Actually thats one of the things i like about My Lot,regardless of grammar or punctuation,if you have a topic to post as long as you are understood whether its in simplified or even at times broken english ,its no big deal, members being of international composition, some countries usage of english is not as pure as some others,so in a way My Lot may be a good stage to practice and improve written communication skills in English.since postings are brief and members whose 1st language is english will post in flawless written sentences which in turn can be picked up by those less well versed and help them improve so its a good thing,as long as what is posted is understood ,and not taken out of context, then its fine

Hi Rose_Ellen, I am one of those few who makes plenty of grammar and spelling mistakes. Most of these errors have crept in because they are used by someone we respect out here, and we dont ever think they are wrong. So we do need a bit of guidance from native English speaking folks. :) And most movies have slangs, which have also become part and parcel of our language. Of course, we do need to read a lot. :) We are just trying. :( Please be patient with us. :) At times when we type, even when we read the response again, we dont notice the mistake until it has left. Initially I used to be mortified, but the way mylotters have put up with it, and encouraged me as well, I must say, I have become quite shameless. I am one person who is open to corrections and all help that you can give me. But I am told that is against mylot rules. Therefore, I have a small suggestion. If and ever you come across my responses, and find that I've made a grammar mistake, please use the correct format in your response, highligting it with bold feature of mylot code. I will read it, and correct myself. Hope you will help me. :)

I'd like to say that I don't discriminate. But I suppose I do... If a discussion has such poor spelling or grammar that I can't understand it, I don't bother to respond. And perhaps I should?
I know it's difficult, because for many MyLotters, English is not their first language. I also know that my own foreign language skills are terrible! But I don't have the patience to struggle through poorly constructed writing.

Hi
I am just 3 days old on Mylot and I don't actually check the spelling and grammar part.Mainly, because it is more to do with the typo errors which people tend to make.As I do that quite often
I ahven't come acroos anyone with terrible English yet so its all good
