What do you think are the basic needs of a person in his life? I mean the most important things a person needs in life to survive are -
1. Food
2. Clothing
3. Shelter
What are the other things that people need in order to survive in this place called Earth?

Those three would definitely be the basis of it all. I think love and consideration is important. Good health, and brains. I think the less materials items the better but some people are really into those and it makes them very happy. And the ability to make good choices.

I cant deny this one. Food, clothing, Shelter, Medicine, and alll that. I think we do need to consider medicines. People so often forget that one and restrict themselves to just the shelter levels. :) Air, water, sunlight, wow. Yes. Wonder why Adam Smith didnt think of them. He was only thinking of money. :) May be he thought even friends and love involve expense! Cant say he was wrong. :(

Hi Denver,
Since you are talking about brain, why leave our things like heart, blood, etc. Come on guys I was not talking about things which we are born with. I was talking about things we are not born with.
Medicine is indeed a great thing that everybody needs. It does not necessarily have to be pills and syrups but still even a tree leaf can be medicine and we should bring all such things under the same category.
Thank you for responding.

Hey sagnik! You have picked some of the basic needs for people
to survive in this life, but there are still many more! We
must have companionship, friends, family. We must have things
that we can do so that we are kept busty and not get bored. We
must have money so that we can buy things. It is no longer as
simple as the 3 basic things that you have listed! The world
is so much more complicated than that! We must also have the
proper medical care that is needed so that we can live healty
lives! And there is so much more!

This is the best response I have got as of now and I do not think there will anything better than this. You have a best response coming your way soon, I guess, unless you are very unfortunate and someone responds even better. Thank you for such an informative and interesting response.

The next need that I would list beyond food, clothing and shelter is LOVE. The reason that I choose love is that it emcompasses so many of the things that we need in our lives to be happy. It can be romantic love as in the love between yourself and your partner. Or it can be the love of your family and the support that comes with that type of love. Finally, love also gives you the ability to have friends as well.

Hello, Doran, you are right. That is next need we have apart from food, shelter and clothing. Love is so important for our survival. It gives a meaning to life and makes us do things not just for ourselves but for those whom we love. That is a great driving force.

hi sagnik^^;;
if you are talking to physical survival then i would just add air, water and good medication when we get sick. In this world today, there are many diseases coming out even though we have those needs you've mentioned and they are unavoidable and sometimes incurable.
when it comes to emotional survival, then we need family, friends and a partner that provides love, support and understanding. we all know the saying "no man is an island" and we cannot live and enjoy living without these around us. happiness and contentment will never be achieved unless we have someone to share all these things with

A good companion…a soulmate really, for the sake of who you can forgo your food, shelter and clothes LOL that’s a bit far fetched but believe me, a good partner is worth every trouble in life.

Aside from those things that you have mentioned, Im gonna have to say that people need other people or at least pets. I mean "no man is an island" as the saying goes. People need the interaction that they get from other people. If that's not possible then the company of a pet. A living thing to talk to and respond. Like the situation in "I Am Legend" movie. He thought he was the last person on Earth, but he still has the hope that there might be others out there. What kept him sane somehow in dealing with the thought that he was all alone, was his pet the German Shepherd. They both kept each other company, looked out for each other, and that helped Will Smith's character in being focused in finding a cure and keeping his thoughts sane.
Well, thats just what I think anyways.^_^

Yeah, I have an idea on how that is being alone most of the time at home. Good thing that there's the tv, books, and internet to keep me company. I also have pets. Its quite a bummer if there isnt any electricity and the pets are free to roam around the neighborhood. There wouldnt be anything else to do but sleep. However, being in solitary confinement like you have mentioned is probably 100x more frustrating that what I feel during power outs.

There is a big difference in being able to survive in this world and being happy. In theory we can be put in a cage alone and with food we'd be able to survive...but we wouldn't be happy. The real question is if we can survive if we are not happy. If some one lived in solitude but was feed, would their life expectancy be less? I would think it would be, but I can't back that up with proof. I think you would live longer if you had food, clothing and shelter if you were also happy. Companionship is also important and could be considered part of happiness. So, I guess that's my answer: Happiness and companionship.
Oh, and maybe a little chocolate thrown in there too?

Hi sagnik, the first essentials to survival are of course water, fire and food. If you're talking actual survival here a good survival manual would be handy. Shelter and clothing would be next. I haven't seen the programme for ages but used to enjoy 'Survivor' where they drop a lot of people on an island somewhere and let them fend for themselves, apart from the huge production team of course, and the stand by medics.

Hi S2mmy,
Your English is not that bad. Anyway, who am I to comment on that? My English is no where near good.
I never apologized for my bad English and I do not think you should.
Friendship is really important. We need people with whom we can share things and be with when we want to. I love my friends. Without them my life would not even be half as good as it is now. Thank you for the response.
