Yes it was a thrilling encoounter, and as far as reaching 411 by Srilanka is concerned, India's poor fielding and bowling contributed the most. But lets not forget that even India could get into a score like 414 is not easy and Definitely Srilanka is not such a country that can easily let India to Go for the Runs.
So there are so many factors responsible for the huge scores by both the team.
First It was Rajkot Ground which is quite famous for it's flat track. Also the previous highest total in Rajkot was 379 again by India. So It's not just the bowlers were done wrong or the fielders did not contribute up to the mark, but mostly the flat track & fast out field played the major role.
Also appriciation should be given to the Srilankan side that do not loose hope even after they were targeted such a huge total. They played with determination and got to a fighting total. If India could not bowled with a discipline in the depth overs, it could have resulted againest India.

Let me correct you first. The final Sri Lankan total was not 409, but 411. And yes, I think it was a poor fielding display where plyaers like Raina, Kohli too dropped catches which should have been taken at this level.
India posted their best total in ODIs still found it difficult to win the encounter against Sri Lanka in the first ODI at Rajkot. India, batting first, scored exactly a run more than what they had scored against Bermuda during the 2007 World Cup. India, with the help of a blistering 102-ball 146 by Virendar Sehwag scored a mammoth 414/7 in the stipulated 50 overs. Sehwag was helped by seniors like M S Dhoni who scored 70+ and Sachin Tendulkar 69. Ravindra Jadeja too played a cameo of an innings to push the score past the 400 run mark.
Sri Lanka replied with style and gave enough run for his money for Dhoni who conceded that he had no ideas to contain the Sri Lankan run flow for as far as the 35th over. Dilshan played an innings of his life. He scored a career best 160 but still had to be on the losing side.
Earlier, Sehwag and Sachin gave a more than solid start for India posting 153 for the first wicket. It was difficult to say who more of a dominating partner was. The Rajkot wicket was predicted to be a belter and it so happened. For the second time in the history of ODIs, more than 800 runs were scored. The second wicket partnership proved to be even better when Sehwag and Dhoni put on 156 runs. It was raining only fours and sixes in Rajkot.
As long as Dilshan was in the middle, India was regularly running out of ideas. Sangakkara too was not to be left behind. He too contributed with a 40 ball 90. It was this innings that brought the climbing required run rate under control. But it was also Sangakkara’s wicket that started the downward slide and eventually cost Sri Lanka the match. Praveen Kumar was the bowler who got the prize scalp of the Lankan captain. Jayasuriya, who was dropped in the batting order, could not do much with the bat, and so was Jayawardane. Two run outs, the wicket of Mathews, whose catch was brilliantly taken by Sachin, eventually ensured that the match was not out of India’s grasp. Ashish Nehra bowled a beautiful final over to fix a final nail in Sri Lanka’s coffin.
