I was reading this question online and thought it would be nice to ask here on myLot.
Would you have one of your fingers surgically removed if it guaranteed immunity from all major diseases?
If so, which one and why?
If not, why?
What diseases are you most scared of.
I think these answers are going to be very interesting.:)

Oh my, I just think that all my fingers are important - especially when I was typing on myLot. LOL! I'm not sure if I would allow it to happen. But if I have some serious medical condition, why not? I would definitely do everything just to heal me because my family still needs me and I certainly want to see my grandchildren and die of old age.

No, I would not. I simply do not like to loose any of the organs which god has given to me, for a immunity which is going to be given by the humans.
There are two diseases which I am scared of, one is having a stroke, and becoming paralysed, and the second is Blood Cancer.

If you were born with six fingers, would you have one removed to be normal?
Most people who are born with 6 do so--or their parents choose to do it for them. Would you be upset at your parents if you found out they removed your sixth finger when you were young?

I might just leave it. If I was born with it, there is a reason God gave it to me and it would make me special. :)

Yes, I most definitely would. I don't use all of my fingers much, and the trade off would be great. Immune to cancer, obesity, the flu, etc. I would live a long, healthy life, for the cost of a relatively low-used finger. What a good deal that would be!

maybe some of the things that go along with obesity, such as high blood pressure, heart disease?

You sure can. If you were planning on cutting your finger off, I would hope that it would also help what you currently have.. ;)

This is in response to your response, even if I was born with six fingers, I would have hesitated to take it off, the reason being in India, it is considered an auspicious sign to be born with either six fingers or toes.

Okay I will sacrifice my left small finger.I can replace some artificial stuff after. Well any killer diseases are to be feared of. Heart attacks, cancer, kidney failure most importantly. I don't fear AIDS( I don't get chances to become bad,)

chelsgrrl69 on no I like my fingers as they make my hands able to
'type and if I could not type I could not mylot. ugh I am addicted but its a good one.The disease I am most afraid is the one i have diabetes, because if I do not take really really tight control of my blood sugar I may have a stroke or get cancer or have heart attacks. those are not very attractIve choices to think about. so I must be thoughtful each day and make the correct choices so I stay as healthy as possible. this is a good fear as it keeps me from having side effects which is really good.

Hey Hatley,
You are right in that fear is good because it keeps you healthy. If we were not scared of diseases, we would not take care of our body right, eventually get the diseases, and we would all be sick =X
And I would surely love to keep my finders so I could type. I barely use my pinky. [maybe I could barter for a toe :P ]

I think this would be a sacrifice that would be well worth it. If I had to chose which finger I would have amputated, I think that I would chose the pinky finger on my right hand. The reason that I chose this finger is because it seems like it is the one finger out of the ten digits that I have that I use the least often. I know that the majority of people would chose one of the fingers on their left hand, but I am left-handed so it would cause a major difficulty to me to lose one of the fingers on that hand.

Yes, I would! I would gladly donate my pinky, maybe the left hand side if it guaranteed immunity to certain diseases. Cancer and heart attacks come into mind as the major ones that I would want to be immune from. That would mean I wouldn't have any restrictions in anything I eat, and that'll be great. Then, I'll just have to watch my weight, and then I'm all set!

This is difficult! Since I'm not really predisposed to any diseases that I'm aware of, I'm going to say no. I love my fingers, and I play the piano, so I would find playing with less than ten a little too annoying. I am afraid of cancer.

I don't think so because I depend on my fingers to do everything from driving my wheelchair to typing to writing to feeding myself. I know it's only one finger but it would be a very big deal to me. Perhaps more than most people. If I had to do it, I would lose the pinky finger on my left hand because it never behaves the way I want it to anyway.

hi chelsqrrl^^;
sure, why not? what is a finger compared to a kidney and other organs being removed and replaced and those hardcore operation being done not include those chemotherapy for cancer that will eradicate a person's cancer cells but also the good cells so it's like dying and a 50/50 chance of survival. i think it's very wise to sacrifice a bit for a much more benefit.
maybe i would choose to sacrifice my pinkie finger on my right hand removed because it wouldn't be that much obvious rather than somewhere in the middle. i choose the right pinkie because i use more the left pinkie in typing and playing the guitar..

Hi chelsgrrl69! Nice discussion!
Well it is really hard to give up any one of my fingers, whether its the baby finger or the thumb... They are all important and have their own functions... But if it would mean gaurranteed good health or immunity from all major diseases, especially if I am suffering from it already---then I guess it is worth sacrificing...
I will not be selfish and think of the ones I love... I know they would want me too to give up one finger if it would do good for me.... but they cannot decide for me and I would not give them hard time of convincing me anymore.
I will choose the baby finger. We have history of high blood and heart attacts--- it runs in our blood. Cancer and diabetis too.
