Do you find learning driving difficult?

I have just got my learner's permit a week ago, I tried couple times driving around the block under my spouse's instruction. I found it scary... it probably sounds silly to most of the people because a lot of people is holding the driving license and it is an easy job...
What my problems are I found I have a fear of stepping on the gas, I was driving 5-10 mph around the block the whole time... one time a car came behind me, that really scared me... second, I feel like I'm gonna hit the stuff on the side if I drive too close that makes me cannot keep driving on the right side but the middle of the road...
I always dream about driving - nobody on the road, I could drive where I want...Do you have anything about learning driving to share? I didn't think I was gonna be scared of driving and thought I could have good control of the car but it seems like it is controling me... that's not good...So do you know anything that would help????

Hi mermaidivy, I have a driving license, and I got it a year ago when I was in university. I learnt it from driving classes with another two friends. My coach was always been terrible. When we made a mistake he would shouted at us. It's really mean. But the shout worked, it really helped us remind lots of stuff, on the other side it kind of made us a little nervous. If u can, u should never be nervous, control yourself before u get into the car. Maybe u should learnt with some friends who can make u relax. An easy mood will help a lot. I'm a guy, but don't consider that only guys can drive well. There was a girl in the driving class and she was the best one in class. So believe yourself and relax. Have a safe drive, good luck!

hah, Your story sounds just like mine. I was excited about driving since i was 15-years-old and |I never thought that I would suck at it. But, guess what? I really sucked at it. I was always afraid of driving fast and when I drove slowly, I was afraid someone will hit me from behind, I hated small, narrow streets where you hardly pass between the walls or the parked cars. I even had an accident (or two). However, I never gave up and after two years of fears and constant attempts now I am a really good shaufoir and I am not scared of anything connected to driving. But I have a new problem now - I am afraid of being in a car, without driving. When we go somewhere and take turns on the wheel, I am really scared when I am not the one to drive
I wish you good luck with your driving practice and safe trips :)

It sounds to me like maybe you need you eyeglasses checked. I learned to drive while still a teenager and my first "boyfriend" was a racing car driver and we lived WAY out in the country so we could drive as you say with the road all to ourselves. I learned by driving aggressively around a cinder pile, where if I made a mistake nobody would get hurt. My dad wanted a wussy girl, but when he found out I was going to be a competitive tomboy kind of daughter then he went with the flow and tried to teach me to test my limits. Before he let me go boating on the river by myself, for example, he made me go out in a storm with him, but he just sat there waiting to see if I could handle the boat on my own. The wind was blowing so hard that it swept us way off course. I thought for sure we were going over the dam, but he still didn't lift a finger.
Another time I came home from school and my car was gone! He sold it without telling me and in its place was a stick shift which I did not know how to drive. I had to drive it to school the next morning. No problem. It took me about 1/2 hour to learn. As the other person said, you might want to take lessons (unless you know a cute guy who races cars and wants to teach you, lol) -- congrats on getting your permit...and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE!

O Wow that is good, congratulations, at least now you have a learner's permit. Anyway, i do not find driving lessons difficult. Actually when i first enroll for a driving lesson, my first day was to drive on a traffic with full of buses, big tracks and i drive in the evening. And it is really fun. The second day, the instructor told me to go to a place where the cars needs to be drive fast and then we go there and wew, it is really fun, imagine i take the wheels and the car is running for about 100kph and then, i learn how to drive and not fear driving at all. I hope this helps. Have a great day!

It was hard for me to get the license and at first I was scared to drive too. At first I would rarely drive. Then I found out that I felt better if I went alone in the car. Other person will make you feel more nervous and point at any single mistake.
After getting used to drive by myself everydays I got more confident. Maybe doing a few drives by yourself can help you too.

it's normal for a beginner to experience what you are experiencing right now. Why don't you try practicing in a place where there are less cars. Just keep practicing and you'll get the hang of controlling the accelerator pedal. Another thing you can do to increase your hand and eye coordination is by practicing driving simulator games. It may not be as real in a car but you can practice your response time and eye quickness in a game. Just have confidence in yourself because confidence is always needed when learning how to drive.

HI,
I learned how to drive since I was 14... well, that was when I was back in my country... so when I really driving when I was 16. My whole time of driving, I got only 1 ticket... hahhaha... I have been driving for over 10 years now.
It is a feeling for a first time driver... you will get use to it when you practice more and more... and more... you said you afraid to hit something on a side of the road right? well,.... it won't hit if you don't go straight toward it. just keep the distant between your car and other car in front of you. you dont need to scare when a car comes behind you... cuz they are watching you more than you are watching them. just keep your eyes on the road as much as you can... and side to side too.
Dont worry, you will a good driver once you careful on your driving... keep driving and always pay attention to the road in front of you. keep the speed of the car normal... and the MOST IMPORTANT THING... when you scare about to hit something then... what should u do? BREAK not Gas ok?
you will be ok... good luck and hope you pass your driving test pretty soon

It's not difficult. IT'S SCARYYYYYY!!!!! I have never seriously gone behind the wheel so far. One time my BF tried to teach me, all I did was scream for a good two meters and I swore I just closed my eyes, and let go of everything. My BF had no choice but to step on the brakes himself. :D

well, if u want to learn how to drive, you must have a sense! you have to feel the car, feel the road, feel other drivers and the environment! driving with somebody elses (friend or family member) car on a village-road or elsewhere with less traffic, this sense become stronger, and a few times after, it makes the driving easier!!!
drive always carefully!
have a nice day!

I learned to drive by hiring a driving teacher from a driving company and it work for me. I also was afraid and was not sure if I could stay in my lane and stop before I would hit the car in front of me. There were 3 of us taking the driving lesson and the other two were not any better then me so it put me at ease. I had to take at least 3 lessons and that is all I needed then I used the driving company car and took my driving test I pass the first time. I did have a little trouble parallel parking but I still passed.

If I were you, I also fear driving while facing the situations you mentioned. To learn driving isn't a short time progress, to control the car skillfully would make you confident. It needs time, also to me.
The trainer told me, throw your eyesight to long distance, to make decisions before it happening, if not you haven't time to react. To get this ability needs time, or more practice, so be slow in the beginning, then you will find your feeling and enjoying the happiness in the journey.

NO. Lucky me :) When i enrolled in the driving school its gives me more confidence to be on the driver´s seat. I like the feeling of in control. I guess it´s all in the mind. Have focus and dont entertain your fears otherwise it will makes u scared even before you step on the gas. Feel the car and the movement... connect your hands with the movement of ur feet. one most important tip..keep ur eyes on the road! have a nice driving.

Learning to drive is a skill to be learned..it's like riding a bike..once you have the balance part sorted,it's second nature..In a car,the main thing is learning to co-ordinate the clutch, gears, and your speed while watching what's going on around You..(I'm assuming You're learning on a car with manual Gears,as in a car with an automatic Gearbox, you put it in drive or reverse, and you only need the gas pedal to go faster,or brakes!) Like balancing a bike, clutch control becomes second nature..listen to the engine..if it's running too fast,it's time to go up a gear..too slow,go down..one tip I remember on clutch control was how slowly you could make the car go on a quiet road or parking area with no cars around..the point where the engine starts to move the car as you operate the clutch pedal is called the "Biting point"..hold this point to see how little you can move the car in the space of say 15 seconds..it's good practise! Good Luck with Your learning..and Never forget You're still learning each time You drive once You pass Your driving test!

Driving is a matter of practice and of course the guts to do it. I too have the fear of driving when I started but with constant practice and exposure, I manage to drive and have been good at it. More so that I have worked in a rescue service. So obviously I have to drive an ambulance as well as a firetruck. Well, it was scary at first but later on I get to have the hang of it and gained confidence. So my suggestion is that you just try your best and have more exposure to gain confidence. Just drive slow and be careful always. I remember this one instructor of mine who told me to remember three things in driving... Concentration, Consideration and Anticipation. Doing this things will surely keep you safe and secure.

I don't find it difficult to learn how to drive its because I learned it myself without anybody seated at the passenger side & I am the one who taught my husband to drive 4wheel vehicle. Its more convenient if you know how to drive motorized vehicle because you need not depend on anbody else if you have some important trip to make & plus in case of emergency you can drive. Its only willingness & guts that make driving easier for you to be learned.

Hi. I believe that nothing is difficult to learn when you the right mental attitude and determination to succeed. And I don't have these two when it comes to learning how to drive - that's why I also find it difficult to learn. My husband has tried several times to teach me. He would allow me to drive but I start to rattle every time I see other vehicles coming our way. Until now, I don't have the confidence to drive alone. In due time, maybe. LOL!

I used to believe driving was easy till I hit a tree trunk with my car.I had started learning driving from my friend a couple of days back and was doing a decent job till then. But on the accident day,I was taking a turn when a guy on a bicycle came in front of me.I swerved towards left and in a state of panic hit the gas instead of the brakes. The car zoomed forward and hit the tree.Fortunately, nobody was hurt except the car.Since then,I haven't really tried driving much.I have lost confidence somewhat.I am not saying this to scare you or anything, its just sharing an experience.I feel learning to drive is all about confidence. You have got to overcome that fear and believe in yourself.I am hopeful I'll overcome it too one day...:)
