Going back to a diet that you've cheated on?
Saturday night was hubby's company Christmas party. They served a free dinner, and I did fairly well keeping it healthy. I avoided the scalloped potatoes, doubled up on the veggies, and had a small slice of the roast beef along with some caesar salad. It was dessert that did me in. They served cheesecake! I can never resist a cheesecake! I wasn't too dissappointed in myself after that though.
Sunday was the real problem. Hubby's been sick, hasn't been sleeping well, and he was very cranky on Sunday, which just made the whole day very stressful. On top of that the kids were acting up. So Sunday night I decided I wanted to eat out. We went to this burger place, and I got a Philly Cheese Steak burger. On top of the burger was shaved steak, onions, peppers, and cheddar cheese. OMG the grease!! I also had cheddar fries.
Since Sunday I've been having a very hard time resisting temptations. Every afternoon I start craving some junk food. I do everything I can to avoid it. Today I had a yogurt instead of junk food. But after dinner I could no longer fight it... I indulged in a cookie. Now I'm finding it very hard to avoid eating the rest of the cookies!
Do you find it hard to stay on course after you've cheated on your diet? What do you do when temptations become a little overwhelming?

I find it very hard to get on diets in the first place. I work in a kitchen and there is food every where. Literally EVERYWHERE! It is hard to stay out of it day in and day out. I have resorted to keep myself written reminders of my weight goal...150lbs, down from about 180..last I checked I made it to 176.
I have some very healthy snacks that I like. It is stopping myself from "quality checking" the food at work that is very hard. The notes do help a little though.
Cheers.

Personally I never believed in any of that BMI stuff. Honestly according to that BMI thing, Arnold S (I'm not even going to attempt to spell his last name) would be considered obese. I have a very muscular physique, so I do not believe I can get any lower than around 150, at least not if I want to look healthy!
Either way, good luck to you in achieving your goals.

You are a guy, right? To me 180 already sounds a bit light for a guy... and 150??? Honestly that's around the weight I'm aiming for... so you'd have to be a stinkin toothpick! Ah well, that's your choice.
I know what you mean about your quality checking. I used to love to bake cookies, but I haven't lately due to the diet. Hubby's co-worker keeps asking me for some peanut butter cookies, but I just can't. I know I'd have to taste test them!

Yes dear I am a guy, but I am a short guy. About 5 5, I am just looking to get a BMI of a healthy weight. And that happens to be about 135-150 or so.
It is okay to enjoy in moderation though(testing is one of my biggest challenges as well, but then, I am also a professional chef. Just have to do a few more laps at the pool to make up for it.
Cheers.

The one time I had a successful diet, I walked every day and I counted calories and I only allowed myself a dessert once a week. It worked pretty well.
But other than that one time, yep, every time I cheat on a diet, pretty much, I fall right off the wagon and totally blow it.

Did you maintain the weight after that successful diet?

Until I had children, yes....
After that I was doomed, but keep in mind that I was in my 40's then.

See, the problem is sometimes it's just a big disappointment. Dinner Sunday night was really a disappointment to me. I tasted more grease than anything else. I only ate half the burger, and that was just because I was too hungry not to eat it. I gave the other half to my son. So that burger was extremely disappointing. The cheesecake wasn't so great either, I've definitly had better. And there was this strawberry syrup drizzled on the top that was just nasty! Must have been strawberry pie filling.

Hey kats! OMG! I give you so much credit for being able to resist
temptation for as long as you have! You have already lost so
much weight and I don't think that you should deprive yourself
a little cheating! I give you credit for not cheating at the
Holiday Dinner! That took alot of willpower right there! But,
once you start I know it is really hard to stop! And no one is
MAKING you stop except YOU! So, since it is the holiday season,
and the hardest time of all to stick to ones diet I think that
if you want to indulge you can! The only advice I can give you
is if you don't want to have to start all over again on the
diet, just try to watch the portions when cheating and you will
be fine!

The problem is I still have a very long way to go. If I was within 20 lbs of my goal weight I would not be as concerned, but I still have another 45 or more to go. (I'm not sure exactly what weight I want to get down to... I'm going for a look not a weight). Losing another 45 lbs is going to be really hard, especially if I'm having trouble resisting temptations all the time! Once in awhile is fine, but not everyday like it's been this week.

Oh Kat, I'm useless - I just give in to temptation.

Aww, sorry... but ya know, some days I think I'd rather be happy and overweight than skinny and miserable not being able to eat all the yummy food I want. At the moment though I'm still going strong. Almost 50 lbs down! Another 40-60 to go.

You are amazing and I have so much respect for you doing this. Once you reach your ideal weight then if you gave 5 pounds you will be able to keep it off. I read somewhere that it takes about 18 months for the metabolism of the body to adjust. So you try to have to keep the weight down for this length of time before the body really accepts your weight loss. This was the thinking some years ago but it might have changed - most things do change! what is right one year for you is bad for you the next year.

Sometimes it's best to read the entire discussion so you can fully understand what's being asked... you might have more to say on the subject if you did that.

Yep, that has been my downfall many times..lol thinking I could handle a little bit and eat it then start craving more and more and end up indulging..then falling off the wagon and finding it so very hard to get back on sometimes it takes days..even a week to get back on..and I learn that I gotta say no to the get yummy stuff or find a lower fat/calorie alternative..and no matter what they otherwise tell you..the cheesecake yogurt is nothing like the actual thing and a disappointment to the taste buds...lol

Oh I have. My husband and I went on the slim fast diet, that didn't work so we kept the slim fast and got some yogurt and that helped, but then we got off of it, and now we're eating after dinner AGAIN, we did that before the yogurt thing...
I think it's hard to not think of food when your bored and not busy, lol, but once you start making yourself busy it's better.

Ohmygosh! Yes! Getting back on track is the hardest thing in the world, if you ask me. EVen if you've been going strong for weeks upon weeks, once you screw up that first time.. For some reason getting back into the swing of things is SO incredibly difficult! It'S like your body gets used to eating that junk food or something. *shrugs*. It takes motivation, all right! Good luck to ya!

It is easier to crave the junk food when you've recently tasted some, that's what I think.

It is hearing about peoples struggles like your own that really make me question some of the diets that you hear people talking about. I hear people talk about watching their diets every day of the week except that they take Sundays off. The thing that it makes me wonder if it is really making a difference if you allow yourself to succome to the temptations once a week, how can you get through the other six days of the week. For me, I have never had a hard time getting back to the diet after a small indiscretion, but I also know that I do have to be very careful about the indiscretions that I make and try to eliminate as much temptation as possible. I don't buy a lot of junk food for our house, even for the children. I skipped the playgroup cookie exchange this year because they wanted us to try each of the cookies while there. What business does any woman have eating seven cookies in one night.
