what's going on with the subway fares in nyc?

The MTA is proposing to eliminate the student metrocards!!! Which means not only do I have to pay for my fare, but my child's fare as well. Is it me, or is this totally unfare? Children have to pay for metrocards? What if I don't have the money to pay? Does that means my child cannot go to school? Doesn't it seem like the MTA always "over spends"? Why can't they do the math? The MTA boards has plenty of well paid people to make a functional budget. Why are they not doing that? Love to know what you guys think about this!
