Blu-ray player question would a blu-ray player play well on a standard TV?

I have a question regarding blu-ray players, would a blu-ray player work well with a standard color TV set also can I play my regular DVDs with it too?
I ask because I'm considering getting one but I have a standard 25 inch TV so I'm not sure if it well work good with my TV.
