Just another weather thing, no big deal but it is changing my plans.

No big deal, BUT this one is really cool! We have a foot or more of snow heading our way. This weekend should be very interesting. We're under a Winter Weather Warning right now, with snow beginning tonight and ending sometime Sunday. Almost three whole days of snow! YIPPEE!!!
If you know me, you know that I'm basically a kid at heart. I may not have the energy I used to but I still love seeing the white stuff falling.
But, my weekend plans are ruined. I was planning, for the second year in a row, to decorate our pavilion as Santa's Home, with Santa and Mrs. Claus. This isn't going to happen this weekend and, because Christmas is a week away, I'm not going to bother trying to get it decorated.
Has the weather ruined any of your plans recently? We have had some unusual weather the past few years and that will take some getting used to. I am planning on getting my pavilion decorated next year at LEAST a month early to avoid having the weather interrupt my plans again. Have you already started readjusting your thinking so you're not caught unguarded with our unusual weather?
P.S. I'll post photos once the snow starts.

Truthfully, weather has never really been a factor when it comes to me making plans.
I don't make any.
The only thing that would come between me and my so called "plans", would depend on whether or not it were too cold outside. As you are aware, I can't stand the cold.
Brrrr! Place me and my girlfriend in front of a Yule logged fireplace with a snifter of brandy, or a glass of Baily's Irish Cream in hand; that's all I need. The warmth alone from those could certainly start my Yule log on fire without any need for fuel! Keep the cold and snowy weather at bay, outside where it belongs; then call me in mid June or July when it's all over.
As far as decorating the house goes, we haven't even started yet...not to mention...there's NO snow on the ground. To me it just doesn't "feel" Christmas-y.
Maybe that's part of my problem? I USED to like this season...but you are correct in the fact that the weather has been screwy, and I think that has a lot to do with the way I feel about the whole winter/Christmas scene.

I'm losing the deck! I just measured it; 15 inches and it's still coming down very heavily.

Just to set your mind at ease Marti...Toronto IS the warmest city in Canada. Contrary to most believers, it can get EXTREMELY hot here in the summer. What I don't care for, is just the coldness of the winter months, and having to get all trussed up with a billion layers of clothing, just to go outside. How can ANYONE expect to physically move like that? Sheesh! Other than that, the weather here is fantastic, perfect for gardening, and Canada would be proudly blessed to have you here. Saskatchewan and Alberta are the coldest provinces in winter. Ontario is not. We're much farther South. Actually, if really want an EXCELLENT comparison weather-wise, Toronto shares the same temperatures equal to that of New York City. Truthfully we're becoming, AND looking, more and more like her every day! (And I just love New York!)
Crowds never bother me, when it comes to shopping...just as long as they don't get in my way. I'm a fast walker when I shop; know what I'm after, go get it, then immediately head for the checkout. Oh sure, I may browse a little when I'm not in any hurry to get back home. I have a few favorite stores I like to check out from time to time...see what's new, sort 'o thingy. You know how we guys are? Gotta see the latest..."whatever". When I DO have a lot of time to spend shopping around, then you'll probably find me out there wandering around all day.
Crowds? Nah.
I figure I'm part of the crowd too, so.....(-shrugging shoulders-)

The Weather Channel says we have 16 inches of snow right now (4:00 p.m.) but I do beg to differ. I measured the snow on our deck where it had not blown: 31 inches and it's STILL coming down hard! They say another 10 inches or so. So, if they're saying we've only had 16 inches so far, we might actually get 20 more inches!
All you have to do is look at this photo to see that there's more than 16 inches. That's what is left of my SUV at the moment. Geez. Those weather people need to come HERE with their measuring stick! Hmmph!

I'm not putting lights up on my house this year. Not because of the weather but because I'm too tired to put them up and take them down. I miss them, I want to have the lights but it's so much trouble. Now I understand why old folks have those tiny little trees because this year I have one, too. I miss my special decorations on the big tree but it's just easier with the little one.
I hope to see your pictures soon!

I know exactly what you're saying, dragon. I can't do anything by myself anymore. I always put the lights up and have decorated the tree many years by myself but those days are gone. I was going to have my son help me with the decorating but it looks like it won't happen this weekend because of the snow and, since Christmas is so near, it wouldn't make sense to do it after this weekend.
I have a small, fiber-optic tree that I inherited from my mother and that is up in our front bay window. We're SUPPOSED to go get a real tree today but I've had so many broken promises that I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen.
I'm going to try to get our deck (off the back of the house) decorated instead of the pavilion. It won't be as detailed as I was planning for the pavilion, though. Probably just some lights around the railing and an artificial tree decorated with lights and ornaments. I did that the first year we lived here and it was very pretty. Our neighbors commented on how nice it was to see when they came down the private road we all share.
Actually, I'd better get off here now and get busy if I'm going to do it before the snow flies! My son is coming over today for a few hours so I'll put him to good use. If you and I lived closer (we're not really THAT far apart), I'd send my son over to help you with your lights.

It's here! I don't have any great pictures of a pine tree covered in snow (Christmas tree) but I will before this is all over. You can consider that to be your Christmas tree. In the meantime, here's another tree on our property that is covered in snow for you.
I'll have more pictures of me out there playing in it but I want to wait until the bulk of the snow has fallen. They're now saying we could get 2 feet of snow with this storm!

Last week we actually had snow. The children got two days off of school and were very happy. I ended up having to work from home. Other than that, there was the twins' birthday party, a pool party in September. It was cooler than we expected and rainy in the morning, but everybody ended up swimming anywa.

Snow when there are kids around is the best kind. That is, if we don't have to go in to work. I'm glad to hear that you were able to work from home. I did that for about 20 years.
I love seeing children playing in the snow. It takes me back to the time when there were no worries and we weren't expected to do any shoveling! LOL
My husband shoveled our front sidewalk out to the driveway and came in huffing and puffing, moaning and groaning. But, he's not in shape anyway. I used to love shoveling the snow. I don't know why. Maybe it was because it was one job you could say was "finished". Things like laundry, dishes, cooking, they're never over.
I'm glad to hear that everyone was able to get in the pool. I used to have a pool and hated getting in it when the weather was cool since the water was always cold. But, I had a friend whose son refused to get out of it, even when his teeth were chattering and he was shivering head to toe. I guess that's the difference between being a kid and being an adult.
I hope you have the best Holiday season ever!

Nah, the weather hasn't ruined any of my plans. We live in Houston, Texas and although it did snow a couple of weeks ago that has passed and now its warming up quite nicely for the holidays. I don't like snow, driving in it causes wrecks and people act like they can go 500 miles an hour and still stop without a problem.

You are so right about people thinking they can drive like maniacs in the snow. I can drive quite well in snow. I know how to do it safely. It's the other drivers on the road that scare the heck out of me! As long as they keep their distance, I don't worry. The problem is, the morons on the road DON'T keep their distance.
We are supposed to go out to a Christmas party given by my husband's company tomorrow night. I doubt we'll be going now. I could drive but I'd worry about other people slamming into us. It's just too risky.
I think I'll just stay home and build snowmen and make snow angels instead.

Hey MW! Same here! We here in NY have gotten the "weather word"
that some sort of storm is heading our way too! And that we also
should be prepared for up to 6-10 or more inches! Well, seeings
believings! I have heard so many "weather alerts" before and they
turn out to be nowhere near what they are forcast to be so I no
longer get excited until they show me when it hits the ground and
I can take my ruler outside! Here in NY we have been "teased"
about these types of snowstorms over and over and we end up with
maybe 3-4 inches! I know we all want a white Christmas and all
and quite frankly this is really bad timing since I still need
to do my grocery shopping for my "Chrismas Dinner" and some other
Christmas Gifts so I will be really pissed off if this time they
turn out to be right! So, I will just pray that they are wrong,
as always so I can do what I need to do!

Hi Opal. I went out yesterday to buy everything I need for Christmas dinner. I wasn't going to trust the weather. The stores were PACKED!
We now have about 16 inches of snow and it's supposed to continue coming down hard until around 8 p.m. They're saying we could get up to two feet! I would trust the weather predictions where you are this time, since it is the same system we're getting.
It IS very bad timing! We're supposed to get more snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. THAT should be the only snow we get, in my opinion. By that time, most of us have our shopping done. Of course, that may make it difficult to people to travel on those days. We're supposed to have 8 people coming for Christmas and I hope everyone can make it.
Try not to get too pissed off! I'm sure that everyone in this storm system is having their own problems and will understand if things just can't get done.
THIS is weird! I was just looking at the Weather Channel and there's a town called "Opal" near us and it has already gotten 16 inches of snow. I hope that doesn't happen where you are! LOL
Just be careful, no matter what your weather is like. Stay safe!

When there's snow around, it doesn't matter what your age! It turns me back into a kid, although I'm not as active as I was way back then.
You're probably getting snow by now. I hope that what has happened here won't happen to you, unless you want more snow than they're predicting. They've been telling us we could get up to 2 feet of snow and we now have over 33 inches! It might just hit the 3 foot mark before this is all over.
I was beginning to think that we'd never have the snows we had as a kid. I can remember a 4 foot snow when I was a kid and 5 feet of snow in a 2-week period in 1979. We got 31 inches in 1983 when my oldest son was 18 months old and 18 inches in 2006. This is the most we've had since 1979!
So, don't be surprised if you get more than what the weather "experts" have predicted. You just never know. You might get less than predicted, but I kinda doubt it based on what we have here.
Stay safe!

Thanks MW! I do have to say that the sky sure does look like
a "snow sky" and the "weather alerts" just keep coming! They
are threatening us with 6-12 inches! So, I'm starting to believe
that we are going to get at least some of what they're predicting!
I see the what's happened where you are and the states surrounding
so maybe this time they might have it right? And I have to
hold off on my Christmas Dinner shopping until Tuesday since I
really want to get another turkey and don't have room in the
freezer! Hope I'll be able to get to the store by then! Since
I have to walk or take the bus and then a cab home it might be
iffy! Will let you know what happens! Be careful too! Stay
inside where it's safe! My girlfriend/neighbor called me at
7:30am to make sure that I'll be ready to go out to "play"
as soon as the snow starts sticking! And, you bet I will! We
both are still kids at heart!

Yup! This is really a strange things in our environment now. Climate is changing and no one can predict what is the climate next month or year because there are some changes...

I like having the four very different seasons but this weather we're having is ridiculous. We normally do not see this much snow, not even anywhere near this much snow, until the month of February. It is not even technically Winter yet and we've had five snows and one day of freezing rain already. I think we are in for a very bad winter.

I think that is now the effect of what they called "climate change". This world will be facing more dangerous time as it is goes to it's end. Even in our country floods and rains is very strange because rainy season is almost everyday now...It should be on the start of march up to October but it seems that path is not followed...

I like to have the decorations up for at least two weeks, one week before and one week after Christmas. Actually, two weeks before Christmas, one week after. That makes it worth it.
I just bundled up and went out on our deck. I measured the snow: 15 inches and counting now. It came up over my boots! LOL
I love this snow as long as I don't have to go out in it and as long as I don't hear of traffic accidents or people getting hurt because of it. Too many people take stupid risks in snow and usually get what they're asking for. That makes me sad.
But, just to look out the window and see how lovely everything is, that is so nice. It's so peaceful outside right now. Snow apparently does not allow sound to carry because I don't hear a thing out there except the snowflakes landing ever so softly. It really is beautiful.
Now, if it would all melt by Monday! (Fat chance but I can still hope, right? LOL)

I'm glad that you got some snow. Isn't it pretty? I hope for your sake that at least the roads are clear for you on Wednesday.
Our roads here are treacherous. I've heard all kinds of reports of tractor trailers jack knifing and getting stuck, of course causing major backups. Hundreds of cars are stuck, some have been since last night. I went out yesterday to get the few remaining things I need for Christmas and the stores were packed! Luckily, I was able to get into the "20 items or less" lane and didn't have to stand there too long.
I think we'll be able to drive by Monday. I'm sure the plows will be very busy all day tomorrow. My son is not going into work tonight, thank goodness. He has a car, no 4-wheel drive and, with the roads so bad, he's not going to chance it. There probably won't be a need for him to go in, anyway, since he works in a retail store and there most likely will not be many shoppers, if any.
I'd love to see a photo of your snow, if you can get one. I LOVE seeing snow, especially in photographs! LOL I don't mind snow at all but we're getting way too much of it. We have probably over 33 inches already and it's still snowing very heavily. Tomorrow should be, uh, interesting. LOL
Take care of yourself and stay safe! I wish you the Merriest of Christmas'.

Hi enola. It's times like this that I would love to have kids to throw snowballs at! My sons live 12 miles away and they weren't about to come for a visit today! Maybe they can make it tomorrow. That would be such fun!
It's still snowing outside. We have 33 inches at last measure and it's still coming down very heavily. It SHOULD end sometime late tonight. Then, I'll be out there playing in it. I hope I can get my husband outside, too, at least so I can blast him with a snowball or two. LOL
Isn't it amazing how snow can turn us right back into being kids again? Well, some of us, anyway. I'm afraid my "snow fort" days are over but, as long as there's someone around to pull me back up, I'll still attempt to make a snow angel or two. That's out of the question for now because there's just too much snow. We haven't had this much snow in, geez, it must be 30 years now! We got 18 inches of snow in 2006 but not even nearly that much until today.
Enjoy the snow and have a very Merry Christmas!

I'm sorry to hear that the weather is going to prevent you from decorating as you had planned. Sometimes life gives you lemons, you know?
I did not decorate as much as I had wanted to originally this year either. It seems like Christmas was so far away and then all of a sudden BOOM! Christmas was here! I know exactly what you're saying, schulzie. This entire year has zoomed by. I'm still putting my pots away from the growing season and should start planning next year's garden in only a couple of months!
I went out yesterday, yeah, I braved the crowds and man, oh, man! Were there ever crowds! Everyone was panic shopping! Luckily, I only had a few things to pick up because I always try to have the majority of my Christmas shopping done at least right after Thanksgiving. I didn't quite make it this year but was lucky enough to get into the "20 items or less" line. Most people were REALLY panic shopping and had full carts.
I hope you get it all done by Christmas. I still have baking to do, too. I was going to start today but I pulled a muscle in my shoulder yesterday and can barely even move my neck without a lot of pain. Hopefully, I'll get it all done before Christmas.
I don't make fudge but I do make chocolate-covered peanut butter balls. Wanna trade?

Hey Girl,
It's too bad you didn't have a chance to decorate the Pavillion. I can imagine how beautiful it would have been. We didn't decorate anything this year. It was too depressing to know there wouldn't be a Christmas again. So maybe next year when you are decorating your Pavillion, we'll be decorating our little tree in our new apt. somewhere.
The day after Thanksgiving might be a good time to start. Hugsss

Hi, Leenie. You sound like I did last year. It was so depressing when my husband lost his job two weeks before Christmas. I didn't decorate. Well, I did put up a small fiber-optic tree I inherited from my mother but that was about it. I thought it would be even more depressing to NOT have any decorations up at all. It did help some!
Right now, we have over a foot of snow on the ground and they're saying that we could quite possibly get two feet of snow before this is all over. However, yesterday, I pulled a muscle in my shoulder. It's the same shoulder I had surgery on years ago so maybe it's weaker than the other one which is why I hurt this one. (It's my right shoulder. I would have thought my left shoulder would go out before my right one because I'm left-handed and use that arm much more often. Oh, well.)
I'll be going outside to "play" once the bulk of this storm is over. I may not make it outside until tomorrow because it's supposed to snow at least through tonight, although the winter weather warning is in effect through 6 a.m. Sunday.
I couldn't get to decorate the pavilion but you know what? This snow is so much better and prettier than anything I could have done! I'll just think of it as God decorating my pavilion. Well, my pavilion and my house and my land and my deck and my car and....
Here's a bit of it for you. My Christmas present to you. I hope you like it!

Hi Marti.. Happy to hear you are in the Christmas celebrating, and decorating mood. Even though you can't do much decorating the way you want.
The weather here is constantly changing too. We are getting more rain than anything else. As I write this it is raining. I don't do much decorating outside, and very little on the inside. Since my kids are grown and moved out I am here alone so it really doesn't take much for me. However the last couple of days my neighbor has slipped in much of her decorating, and thank goodness because if she hadn't she would not have gotten it up because we have heavy rain in the forecast for today.
If I don't hear from you before Christmas. I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Thank you so much, Chevee! I wish you the same!
I'm sorry to hear that you're getting so much rain! I saw that parts of Florida were flooding with all the rain. That is the same weather system we have here right now but it's too cold to rain. It's only 22F outside at the moment! I've heard that, because it's been so cold and the ground is frozen, also the temperature should not get much above freezing before Christmas, this snow should hang around for Christmas. But, I also heard that we are supposed to get more snow starting Christmas Eve and going into Christmas Day! I can only remember ONE year like that before now and that was almost 40 years ago.
I guess it's actually a good thing that we're getting so much snow right now. (Over 12 inches already with another foot expected before it's over.) I pulled a muscle in my shoulder yesterday. I would not have been able to decorate like I wanted to, anyway. I'm just seeing this snow as God decorating my pavilion for me. It's so much better than anything I could have done.

We had a major snowstorm about a week ago. School was cancelled, roads weren't ploughed all day. I live out in the country with some pretty steep hills and my car isn't the greatest in snow. I had a webcast I needed to do at work, so I left home hoping the plough would come along. It didn't. It was treacherous all the way to the biggest hill. Icy, slushy and starting to rain freezing rain. I almost made it to the top of the hill, but got stopped. I backed down the hill and tried it again. No luck. Did that several times and then realized - horrors - I was out of gas and the hill was a really dangerous place to leave my car. Pulled out my cell phone and it was almost out of power. Tried to call directory assistance to get the number for the township office to ask them to come and plough the road. Instead got an operator who couln't find the number and was more interested in her time limits, than in doing her job properly. And it was now raining heavily.
Some days you really shouldn't get out of bed...I trudged up the hill and just as I got to the top, a young couple came along. They were out joyriding in the storm.
lucky for me they came along. They actually got stuck for a while too, but were very helpful. Took me to the gas station, got my car turned around and stayed behind me until I made it to our driveway. Sometimes the kindness of strangers blows me away. I did have to cancel my webcast, but there was nothing I could do. Did I say yet...sometimes I really HATE SNOW!!!!

Hi winterose. I'm glad to hear you had Christmas dinner with friends. That's the best way to spend it, in my opinion. You don't have all those leftovers to clean up, plus you don't have a pile of dirty dishes to wash!
My friends came from Maryland, about 120 miles away, even though we had freezing rain. I tried to talk her out of it but she's more stubborn than any mule I've ever met! (And, yes, she did slip and fall on the ice, not hurting anything but her pride, thank goodness!)
I would love to see one entire week go by without any weather event but, every time I turn on the Weather Channel, there's snow or freezing rain somewhere in the week ahead. Hopefully, this means we're having an early Winter so we'll have an early Spring. That would be the only redeeming feature to all this frozen precipitation.

Thank you so much, ramesh. May you also have a very Merry Christmas.
I wish you could experience snow, at least one time in your life. It is so beautiful but it can also be treacherous. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles on major highways near us who are stranded in this snow. The big tractor trailers are jackknifing all over the place and causing the other traffic to come to a standstill.
I will NOT be going out in this! At least, not until I hear that the roads are passable again. We have about 31 inches of snow at the moment and still have hours of more snow to go before it ends. I do love snow but not THIS much!
Here's a photo of my SUV, completely covered in snow:

Yes, the weather has changed my plans for the last 3 weeks....HIgh winds and Ferries don't run...and I need a Ferry to get to Vancouver or Victoria, for Christmas shopping and supplies.
I am surprised, Marti...that you think Canada is all that cold. We had snow on Tuesday..and was gone by Wednesday night. Yesterday it was 10C..or about 50F...and that is the prediction for the rest of the week. Yes, we are experiencing some weird weather but, so is the rest of the world. We see very few days below freezing in the winter, and I am sure our summers are comparable to yours, as I never have trouble gardening.
Enuff of that, hope all your other holiday plans are falling into place...and Season's best to you and family. Cheers!

That’s a shame that the weather has spoiled your plans. Here we don’t have snow problems but heat hassles because it is summer over here and it is particularly hot right now so any change of plans for us are due to the heat; we have already changed our Christmas Day plans from lunch to dinner because of the hot weather and we are staying indoors in the air conditioning as much as possible instead of dealing with the sun...

When I saw the post about the snow, I immediately thought that you must be on the East coast of the USA. I have been following the progress of the storm on my home page on Yahoo. I live in KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, and we have been having unusual weather here too. It is normally hot and humid this time of the year, with sunny days. But, we've had weeks of rain and cooler weather. Everything is damp and even the ants are moving their eggs and babies out of water-logged nests (and we're on sandy soil).

Yes, I'm on the east coast of the USA. We've had very bad weather so far this winter.
I wouldn't mind seeing the ants moving to higher grounds, though. LOL We have thousands of ants around here and they most assuredly do NOT like it when I walk around their homes. They bite!
This season has been extreme this year for us. We've had over 4 feet of snow so far and our snowiest month is still another month away! February is the month we normally get the most snow. However, January, so far, is holding true to it's nature. January is typically our coldest month and it most definitely is cold. At the moment, it is almost noon and, even though the sun is shining, the temperature is only 17 degrees fahrenheit. The snow we got a week before Christmas is STILL on the ground, although it is much lower.
I think we're simply going to have to get used to unusual weather patterns. I love gardening and it is hard to predict what the weather will be, even from day to day. Last Spring, my garden was washed out from massive rains. This year, who knows?
