I have been told that it is a fruit. Tomato is a fruit. It grows on a vine, thus making it a fruit.

If I am not mistaken, the tomato is widely viewed as a vegetable. However, I think that if you look at the scientific facts, the tomato is actually a fruit...not really sure how the scientists came to that conclusion though...

The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking. Hi Taurisa, Well for me tomato is a vegetable because of the reason of it's taste. If the taste of it was sweet, I think that is the right time to be called a fruit. Well, that's only my opinion. Hope you get my point... As we notice there is no fruit which is not sweet on taste.

Technically tomatoes are fruits, because they contain seeds. But everyone regards it as a vegetable because its flavor goes better with savory dishes.

I think of tomato as being a vegetable because of its taste and the fact that is is used in salads. In a salad I have vegetables like cucumber, lettuce and carrots. They are all vegetables. I think fruits are strawberries, raspberries, oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruits. I know some people believe tomato is a fruit but for me I don't feel that it is.

A fruit is the ovary part of the plant that surrounds the seeds. Vegetables are are edible parts of the plant that aren't the ovary part of the seed. So a tomato is actually a fruit. Many people considered plants that taste sweet to be considered fruits while plants that don't taste sweet are considered vegetables.

Hello taurisca this is checkmail and Tomato is both kind of vegetable as well as fruit. Its an vegetable when its raw, used to make some dishes out of it, and when ripe its eaten directly, so can call it as fruit.Well the most interesting properties of an ripe tomato is that it is an blood purifier, and good for health. And in other side an raw tomato is an good vegetable to eat as food, it includes some vitamins in it.So mostly we use red tomatos that are fruits, me to use it very often, its good for our health.Enjoy mylotting.

nice, but the problem is : scientifically: Plant should be classified into it's own group. Can we classify tomato into two groups (vegetables & fruit)?

Tomato comes under the category of vegetable and not a fruit. I have never heard of it being called a fruit. It is also used in making a vegetable salad and not a fruit salad.

tomato is a fruit. that im certain of. and eventhough it is a fruit it is often treated by people as vegetables. it was categorized as fruits because it certainly contains seeds and as far as i know, the vegetables do not contain seeds. anything that contains seeds is regarded as a fruit. thus, tomato is really a fruit that uses as a vegetable especially by chefs.

tomato plant - this is the tomato plant. its fruits are being used for cooking or eaten raw. it is a fruit vegetable.
Hi, taurisca. I have learned from my young school years, that there are different types of vegetables. This may be so according to which part of the plant is being cooked, eaten or used. Tomatoes belong to the fruit vegetable category. This is because it is the fruit of the vegetable plant that we use in cooking or eat raw. The other kinds of vegetables are the leafy (leaves are used for cooking or eaten raw), stem (stems are cooked), root (such as potatoes, purple yam, etc.) Tomato is one kind of a fruit vegetable.
