What do you do when you get a twisted ankle? Do you immediately go to the doctors? Or do you try to stay off your foot and hope it gets better?
I just twisted my ankle..About a week ago at work. I tripped over this big statue-thing at work, and ever since, my ankle has been killing me! I feel like I walk with a limp because of it. And it's embarrassing!
The unfortunate part is that no, I'm not able to get off work or anything like that due to this. Especially since I have NO doctor's note claiming my condition is real.
What do you do about your twisted ankles? And how do you know if it's twisted or fractured?

I twist my ankle so often that if I went to a doctor every time I'd never get out of there! Apparently though I broke my foot once and never knew it. How bad is the pain, if it is really bad go see a doctor just to make sure it isn't broke, even with a bad sprain she should stay off of it for a few days.
I've had a few bad sprains, which can hurt really really bad. But then my one achiles tendon is an inch to short which is why I am always twisting my ankle.

Ouch I feel your pain. I twisted my ankles a few years back at a works party, it did not hurt too much at the time but the next morning it was nearly the size of a football lol. I could not walk on it and the company Doctor gave me two weeks off which was sweet and when I went back to work they gave me a desk job for another week.
I have to say it did hurt a lot and I had to get x rays but at least it was not fractured. Someone told me that a twisted ankle hurts more than a fractured one,but how true that is, I do not know

maezee well I go to my doctor to be sure its just a sprain and not a broken ankle. then he will tell me RICE which stands for rest, ice, compress it with bandage, and elevate the injured ankle
so the magic word is RICE rest, ice, compress, and elevate.
I found that wrapping it with stretchy tape, then putting some frozen peas package on it wrapped in a wash cloth, and sit down with the ankle elevated helps it to heal much faster.Use that stretchy stuff like women used for varicous veins and dont make it too tight.if you have an ice bag with cap you can use that of course, but a plain old package of frozen veggies wrapped in a towel or wash cloth works beautifully too.

I have never has an twisted ankle before. I have never had any broken bones before that I know of. If I found out that I twisted my ankle I would go to the doctor and get it treated. If you would just go to the doctor and if you indeed have an twisted ankle, your doctor's office should be able to give your job a doctor's note stating that you have an twisted ankle. That way you could miss a few days off from work if need be. I hope that you feel better soon. I could not imagine how broken bones must feel. I am very sorry about your ankle being twisted.

I never had a twisted ankle before. But if I did hurt my ankle, then I would have to go see a doctor and maybe get some x-rays to check if I really did sprain it or something is broken there. I think its better to have it checked to make sure its not serious damage.

First 24-48 hours stay OFF OF IT.
The recipe is this RICE
rest
ice
elevation
compression.
Wrap it with an ace wrap from the bottom up to promote circulation. Ice every few hours, 20 minutes each. Elevate above level of heart. Rest it.
If it doesn't improve within 24-48 hours have it looked at, it could be fractured and he only way to know is have an x ray.

hi maezee! i myself experienced twisted ankle for so many times. luckily here in our country, we dont go to doctors immediately to have it check. there is this ancient Filipino art of healing we called "hilot". the one doing this are called "manghihilot". the procedure in doing this is they carefully massage the aching part using any efficascent oil to keep it smooth while they massage and have your muscles relax and warm. those experienced manghihilot can even feel by their bare hands if there were dislocated arteries.. you just have to bear with the pain coz its really painful while they press the aching part and try to massage it. but after a day or two, everything is back to normal!

Well, if it is fractured, then it will be swelling and feel hurt when you touch it. If it is twisted, it also swelling, but it doesn't really hurt when you only touch it. It will feel hurt when you give pressure to your ankle.
Oh, and it will felt really really hurt when you just got your first ankle injury. For immediate treatment, compress it with ice, tighten your shoes (or use a bandage - this meant to prevent the swollen thing), and try to give some exercise to your ankle (by squatting, or move/pivoting your foot).
Go to the doctor over an ankle injury is not common in Indonesia. We often go to muscle masseuse. They usually know where our muscle injury is and give a massage to fix the muscle. And my masseuse give me an advice over an ankle injury. Always use a bandage on your ankle, avoid giving pressure to your ankle (kicking, jumping, leaning with your sprained ankle as pivot, etc), and give extra time for your muscle to recover. Usually around 1-2 weeks. But to make sure, just wait until one month until the swollen is gone and you feel no more pain upon giving pressure to your ankle.

I have twisted my ankle a couple of times but lucky me they weren't that serious that I have to cut class or not be able to go to work. I just let my foot rest. SOmetimes when I think it isn't too painful, I twist it back hoping it would return to normal lol.

Hi maezee. Sorry to hear about your twisted ankle. I think you should still see a doctor even if it is already more than a week ago. If for nothing, at least you could get a note and maybe get off work for a few days.
Then maybe you could get some sleep after you've dried your hair and without your cats disturbing you (reference to one of your earlier discussion ). Hey, maybe you can even use your free time to do a lot more myLotting.

oh i am sorry to hear that.Last month i droved my uncle to seek treatment for swollen ankles and could not walk very well.Dokter said that this healing process takes a long time about 1 or 2 months.Because my uncle wanted to quickly recover then we decided to go to alternative treatment because in Indonesia many chiropractors are able to heal quickly without surgery.Hey guess what happened after 3 hours later??Directly his ankles healed only by the message on the affected part!!yes he had screamed in pain at the treated at the time of the cure but it was only once and now he can walk properly again =).

I have had my ankle twisted. If it's not something serious you know, as in a few hours it stops hurting. However, if it keeps hurting for days you must go to a doctor, as you might have a muscle damaged, or even a fracture. One way to know is the level of pain, a fracture is more painful than a twist, but the best way to know is going to a doctor.

I have broken my ankle over 9 years ago and to this day, I still have a limp and cannot stand for too long because I still get lots of problems and pains from it. When it broke the outside part of my ankle swelled like a softball and of course I could not walk on it at all. My suggestion to you is if you have not seen a Doctor yet for this, I think you should go. It has been a week now you say and if your still feeling the same pains, then yes go to your doctor. Have you elevated it and put an ice pack on a towel on the sore spot yet? You could always try that first if you do not want to see a doctor for it. But it all comes down to seeing your doctor, especially if this has been going on for a week now. Best of luck.

I think if you've got twisted or even fractured ankle, you need to put ice on it. Putting ice on it prevents swelling. And dont put too much presuure on it because it'll just hurt a lot. Then after sometime if it still hurts, it may indicate that it is fractured. Go to the nearest medical practitioner if it happens. They know what to do with your ankle.

A twisted ankle is very painful. I experienced it too.
An incorrect ankle formation will lead your walk devastating and barely you can move freely.
IF your ankle is swollen, the best remedy is to secure the said injured part and put a cloth bandage then roll it to avoid possible dislocations of your ankle.
You can put an ice compress to remove the dark area.
If after the said procedures did not work, then you feel a possible fracture, then have it taken an x-ray to know the severeness of the said injured ankle and be given proper remedy and medications.

when you twisted your ankle initially, you would have wanted to perform RICE - rest, ice, compression, and elevation of your ankle. but since it's been a week since your accident, apply some warm compress so it hastens the healing. what you have may be just a sprain and not a fracture. if you had a fracture, then you wouldn't be here mylotting due to the pain.
