when you receive a gift, do you really receive a "gift" or an obligation?

i just saw an episode of The Big Bang Theory and this girl gives this guy a present to which the guy responds, "you didn't give me a gift, you gave me an obligation!" and the guy felt that he needed to give the girl something, but the girl said there was no need to give her something in return. i'm with him in this. i feel that when i receive a gift from someone, i have an obligation to return that favor even though i had no intentions of giving that person anything in the first place. what do you guys think about this?

Hi choorp,Welcome to mylot,I have a feelings that when i recieved gifts ,i think that i may also give a gift to her/him.It's much better that i am the one who give because i will not think for an obligation. While when first to recieve i will really find a way to give in return. May be it's the natural feeling as to give and take. Good Luck!
