My computer used to be really fast when it loaded pages. Slowly, it has been slowing down. It is taking longer and longer to load a page. I have DSL. I want to go faster. Does anyone have any ideas what I can to to increase the speed of my computer?

Defragmenting will speed up your computer. You should do it at least once per month. (start-programs-accessories- system tools-disk defragmenter) As for the internet speed, it's very likely that you have hidden spyware programs that are stealing your connection speed. Download and install Spybot or any similar program and scan for spywares and other crap. You should also delete cookies and temporary internet files and start again fresh.

Defragmentation has been done on a regular basis. I have Spybot and I have run it. Maybe I need to run it more often. I already cleared the cookies and temp files and the history files. Any more ideas??

Actually a lot of things can build up and start slowing your computer down until you finally notice it is super slow. The first two things to do is to clear out your browsing history and temporary files as well as your cookies. If you don't know how to do that then don't worry I am going to tell you where to fine step by step instructions and software that will help you. There are many programs out there that will help you with the maintenance that is needed to keep your computer running smoothly but I use "Tune Up Utilities" and I have found them to be the best so I am not going to endorse any other programs but you can look at the others and decide for yourself. You are going to need to optimize the performance of your computer check the hard drive for available space and also see what kind of RAM memory you have working for you. These programs such as Tune Up Utilities do all the work for you then at the end you will want to defragment your hard drive and you will notice your speed come back amazingly. Here is a website that will help you get started with understanding some of the terms of what you will be doing and will tell you step by step how to accomplish whatever you need to do to speed your computer back up again. The website address is : http://www.techspot.com/vb/

Tune Up Utilities is really a helpful tool when it comes to optimizing your PC's performance. It gives you the option to control which programs to run during start-up, "shred" files so they can never be recovered again and free up disk space, and a whole lot more.

Oh - yeah - I seem to have this problem somewhat, especially when I have been on it for an extended period of time. After a few hours, rebooting helps me get back up to speed. Is this the same problem that you're having?

Its either an internet connection problem or you have to free up some memory in your PC. I suggest you visit speedtest.net to check your download speed. Just choose singapore; it is the standard, as what my developer cousin told me. That way, you'll know the upload and download speed of your internet connection. DSL is one of the fastest connection available, as compared to broadband, which is reliant on the signal. If you wanna go faster with your downloads, as you've mentioned in your replies in the posts, download an accelerator. Test drive it to make sure it really works for you. Other people may endorse this and that program, but it may not work well for you. So I suggest you just try them. Just have a restore point so you can restore your computer to an earlier state should anything go wrong (i.e; infected with a virus).

I have to take a moment and thank all of you for your tips and suggestions. Thank You all!!! My connection is something I have been looking at. I might need to move my laptop in order to get a better signal as I am using the Wi-Fi. I have DSL. I need to also check my main computer and see if I can boost the signal it is sending to my laptop. Thank you Grace for sharing your ideas with me.

wireless connections are heavily dependent on the signal. Perhaps, the shared internet connection is the cause of your deteriorating download speed.

so if your internet surfing is really low and this is a problem that affect just internet sufing and not the general speed of your computer so you can clean your files and temp folder first..if there is no changing you can try to change your browser..normally the mozilla firefox for example is faster than ie for example...you can also try to fit your browser such as not adding too much add-on,bars.etc...if the problem persist you must check your connection speed may be upgrade,if possible in some zone,if you want a surfing faster than now!Lastly a solution that can be medium...you can install a software called internet accelerator..these kind of softwares normally improves the download of the pages during your surfing such as it will exclude images or graphics too much weight or script that affect too much your surfing...in some cases the result is a surfing faster but you will see a real few graphic controls or images in the webpages!!I cheked one in the past and it worked ok from this point of view!!

I have one of the best DSL connections in my area. I will have to look into my connection speed. Hmmmm. I know there are accelerators out there. Do you have any that you would recommend I look at? Isn't there a way to increase the amount of information that can be taken into the buffer?

You should try the following steps: Delete Temporary Files using %temp%, temp, and prefetch in Run and delete Delete Browser details and cookies. Remove unwanted start up programs using msconfig in run command.

That is a term I am not familiar with. Could you please explain the procedure for over-clocking a CPU? I have a baseball bat that I could use to clock the computer. hehehehe

Try cleaning out the browser history, internet cashe, passwords etc at least once a week or month. Also delete any cookies or other things that will clog up your system. This will speed up your system performance. Perform maintance such as disc clean up defragmatation and chose selective start up to reduce the number of start-up progrms you have on your system. This will help with any problems you may be having. It'll greatly speed up your system and incress the speed in which windows appear. Check your connection, reset it by unplugging it from the power source for at least one minute. Then plug it back in. At the same time restart your computer this will do veiriturally the same thing for your DSL. It will help with performance. It will speed things up too. Also, try getting on different times. Depending on your area, there may be more net traffic then others and those with dsl usually experance slower speeds as a result. If you have filters check those are plugged in properly to ensure that there is no cross connection between you and the phone line. This causes slowing and sometimes dropped connections.

Done, done, done, done, done. I have done all of those things. After all, they are the most basic things. But thanks for reminding all of us that these things need to be done on a regular basis.

There is no doubt that your computer has been infected by spyware. Get SuperAntiSpyware. It's free, and will definitely help you.

I have been very good about scanning for and destroying spyware, worms, trojans, etc. So I don't think that is the problem but I will scan some more and deeper into the files to see if I have missed something. Thank you for your idea.
