Anyone still talkin' to me?

First, if I may, let me say hello to all of my friends here and ask you all to forgive my long absense. Not that I have any really good excuses, 'cause I don't, but life happens and sometimes we lose interest in stuff. No, that's not right. I didn't lose interest in the Lot, I just got distracted by.....by.....well, life! So anyway, if you have forgiven me, please help me with a dilemma I have. I need to buy a gift for a 12 year old girl. I've never met this girl, never will. I don't know the first thing about her. Except maybe this: she's a girl who doesn't have much. Her family is one that a group of my friends is conspiring to assist this Christmas, to make their Christmas better, to give them the things they need, the same things everyone needs - a warm and secure home, clothes to wear, heat, food, and presents....presents for everyone in the family, and I mean everyone.
See, I've joined this group. It's a wonderfully diverse group, both gay and straight, men and women, of all backgrounds, with wildly differing incomes and lives. I'm not a joiner. Never have been. But this group is one that everyone should be a part of, certainly myself. I've been practically over-blessed and I think I should share those blessings. Oh, and we meet in a bar, a definite plus and a most attractive lure. And I know most of them anyway. Some are friends, some are quite old friends. (I may have gotten just a bit distracted here, again forgive me, I'll get back to the issue at hand) But every year, they use all the resources they have to make several families a heck of a lot happier this Christmas than they were last Christmas. I volunteered to buy a gift for someone. So they chose a 12 year old girl and I couldn't be more excited. I wanted a girl to buy for. I can relate to a 12 year old girl. Yeah, watch it buster, I'm still young enough, at least in my head, to be able to relate to a 12 year old girl. Anyway, my dilemma must be clear by now. If not, this is it, in a nutshell: Wah! What do I get a 12 year old girl, guys????? Makeup? An Ipod? Can I afford an Ipod? Clothes? Prolly not clothes. A new coat? A great big stuffed animal? My head is swimming, I gotta have some help here! Can you help me? Couldja? Please?

No I don't forgive you. I am so pissed at you that I could spit nails! Damn woman, where have you been?............oh right. Distracted by life. Hmmmmmmmmmm....seems I've been suffering from that too.............so ok, not pissed anymore. Just SO DAMN GLAD TO SEE YOU! (you can slap me now, lol)
A twelve year old girl huh? Well is the family is cash poor, then getting her some kind of electronic thingy is going to be heartbreaking down the road when she can't afford to properly utilize it.....cd, dvd's, downloading songs etc., so I'd steer away from those.
If it were me, I'd get the Twilight Books. They come in a boxed set right now.
And I'd also add a lovely lockable diary. She's just at that age where a diary becomes very important. Wrap the diary separately, but include it in the wrapping of the books. Then tie the whole package up in a lovely red woolen scarf with matching mitts. She'll be thrilled to unwrap and unwrap......

Pola, how wonderful to see you again! I know you work hard and I know that you do try to get to the Lot, but it can get really hard to do. This I know from experience. And you're right, 12 year olds ARE picky! I think maybe I'll get a little something, a little gift, and a gift certificate or Visa gift card to go with it. It seems like a good idea to me. That wey, she gets something to open, and also gets something to SPEND! What's better than being able to have your own money to spend? Yeah, I'm beginning to think that's the way to go.
Thanks so much, Pola! And it really IS good to see you.

I would like to suggest jewelry. A nice simple necklace and bracelet set could be worn with anything. There are some places that you could get several jewelry sets for a nominal price.

a lot of girls at this age are starting to get into boys, but makeup is tricky - because what is right for one is totally wrong for another.
Now, I was also into horses, but I realize that many girls are getting out of horses for boys at 12 - I wasn't, but I kind of missed a lot of that "boys" stuff because I didn't want kids.
Too bad they haven't given you a clue as to what kind of stuff she's into - music, tv, whatever....
You might get something Hannah Montana - I think that's kind of the age that is aiming at - but I'm sure there are plenty of people that can relate better since I haven't had a 12 girl, and then it was the roommate's niece, around for almost a decade now!

Yup, makeup IS tricky, isn't it? But honestly, so is everything else! I haven't been around any 12 year old girls for I don't know how long. And they're at an age where it's realllll dicey to buy them presents, because they're right there at the point where they're starting to think more grown-up thoughts, but are still children. Aaarrrgh!!! But I've given it a lot of thought, and you've helped. Yes, really you have!!!! Thank you. And Merry, Merry Christmas Elic!!!!!!

You back in the computer chair yet or swivelling at Mom's? I like the idea of a goat. That would be handy. Something to snuggle up to when it's cold. Milk when she's thirsty and shave to make a sweater. Three presents in one! Oh, you said "COAT", LOL. It's too early for me. I misread you. Make up. That's what I'd buy a 12 year old girl. A proper set. If not that, some other beauty related kit - vanity stuff. Nail polishers etc. Am I helping?

Of course you're helping, you always do! And I really like the idea of a goat. She could butcher it for Christmas dinner, and make a warm coat from the fur! Surely that's something that every 12 year old wants to do, isn't it? Well, isn't it????
A goat coat.
Better than coal.
Better than a bear coat,
or a bare coat.
Hmmm, what to do.
Goats, boats, coats.
Chain of thoughts.
Can't wear them though.
Ok, I give up.......

Did they give you her size? If so 12 year old girls are really in to their clothing. Of course I am sure she would like an Ipod too but those are really expensive. Specifically a lot of 12 and 13 year olds are in to hoodies. Not normal solid colored ones but ones with cool designs. If you have a Discovery clothing store any where around you I recommend going there, they have lots of really cute clothes for really good prices. My daughter who is 13 is also really in to skinny jeans.

Nope, no sizes, no nothin'. So I kinda had to go shopping blind. But I decided on a couple of things I think she'll really like, and not have to worry about them fitting. If you look at the above response, you'll see what I ended up getting.
I want to thank you for taking your time and trying to help me with my dilemma. It's really very kind of you and I appreciate it very much. Here's wishing you and yours a very very Merry, Happy, and Healthy Christmas!!!!!!!

Hi Nova darlin'. You've been sorely missed my friend. Hope your Christmas was grand and I wish you all the best for 2010.
I'm way behind to be able to help you with the gift idea but I'm sure you found something wonderful. It's a lovely idea that you and your friends are doing.

I can see I'm not gonna be a HUGE help here, because I just give my girls MONEY and they really like it, because then they can buy whatever they want with it. I know I loved money in a card the best when I was that age, because nobody ever gets you the right clothes that you like, and giving the wrong gift is worse than no gift at all, it seems.
But, YOU wrote a discussion, and you hardly EVER do that, so I'm bloody well responding. lol

Hey, welcome back!
A 12 year old girl....
I asked my 13 year old daughter. She's still thinking about it. :-)
Thinking...

At this rate, Christmas will be over lol.
She likes this game, Apples to Apples....
Hope that helps....

Why, thank you so much, Letran!!! It's been a while since I've put out a discussion, but this was something I needed some help with. And I'm glad I came back here too. I love this place, Letran, and so very many of it's people. But me, legendary? Gasp, could it be??? Thanks for the smile, darlin. And a very very Merry and happy and healthy Christmas to you and yours.

I think that you should get her a pack of paper and some colors. This might keep her happy. But also get her an electronic thing. Or a Christmas ornament. I think that with colors and a pack of paper she will be able to go far and explore her imagination. This will help her feel good about herself. But also the other stuff. You probably don't want to buy her this though because who knows what she likes? I however like colors and stuff. Also I think that the ornament idea is a good idea because it reflects Christmas and is a good addition to showing everything. Well it is soon to Christmas, I still have to go shopping. I think I'm going to get... well I don't know yet.

Thank you, Apple! You've given me some good suggestions to think about. I love giving Christmas ornaments, especially reindeer ones. I just saw one yesterday that was so beautiful, very delicate, and covered with silver glittery stuff.
I so much appreciate your taking the time to come here and help me out. Take care of yourself, and a very, very Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I understand that you are making new encounters in your life. The affection from other people and views. Their charitable works as deed. It is good actually. I think the gift you can give for a 12- yer old girl is something she can use for herself. Like good books materials, dress she can wear, stuffed animals are good but she about to enter her teen life. A diary book is good also for her. I hope you gonna find the best gift for her.

hi sweetie. bless that great big heart of yours as there are so few who will really do something for someone they do not know. only trying to do my utmost best to help you on this one, i think that this little girl will really appreciate a beatifull dress with shoes to match and maybe a addorable little hat, which can be worn to church or any other day that she feels like. remember our girls always like to dress and feel pretty, no matter what our age.
