It's a new thing basically tried out by bigots following the Matthew Shepard case. The two young men claimed that they were frightened because Shepard hit on them. If the fact that you hit on me and I don't want you to is an excuse to murder someone, I predict that by year's end in 13 days, there will not be one single straight man remaining on the planet. Why is that women are supposed to politely say 'no thank you' to a guy's advances, but if a gay man hits on a straight man, the straight man is allowed to shoot the gay man?
In Australia, it's even worse. You can kill someone just because they say 'do you want to have dinner with me?' I guess Australia is off my places to see before I die list. With my luck, I'll ask a girl to dinner and she'll freak out and kill me in a bathroom in the airport.
What kind of world do we live in when phrases like 'hey, you're cute' and 'do you want to go to dinner?' are reason enough to murder someone? There are plenty of reasons to murder people, for example, if someone tries to rape me all bets are off even though I'm a pacifist. However, I'm not threatened by someone asking me out to dinner. There is no need to shoot them or hit them. All I'm going to say is no. If they persist, I might ask them what part of no they don't understand. I thought this ridiculous defense ended with Matthew Shepard, but two more people--one who mudered a 15-year-old and the other who murdered a 19-year-old in Baltimore and Puerto Rico respectively are trying it. Sometimes it seems like we will never get out of the dark ages.

I think homophobics are scared of the homosexuals because they are afraid that a homosexual will try to rape them so they figure its best to kill them before they rape you. I could be wrong though. It still doesn't make it right. It is a shame that he got killed.

Thankfully there are more people like me ,straight but not narrow. We don't think it is okay to murder a gay person Just because he/she is gay. The bigots are the ones with the problem. They must really are afraid of their own gay feelings. A real straight man may feel awkward if a gay man hits on him but he doesn't turn him into a murderer! These days some straight men may even be flattered. But the best response is "No thank you ,I'm straight" not Violence. We are working our way to true equality.Soon ,real soon this post will sound as dated as the discussion about a black man to dating a white woman.

The difference is it Their problem. Most of us don't give it a second thought. That's progress. Besides,if it weren't for an interracial couple we wouldn't have President Obama.

Hi, cripfemme. This is outrageous! Remind me to never visit or live in Australia. I would never go here. Where I am from, no one murders anyone for saying these type of things. If anything, it will please a person just to know that they are being liked upon.

Wellall bet are off the moment a guy tries to hit on me ,I may be so aggravated I wouldnt know what I will do.I seriuoslt dont think I would muder him though unless I really felt threatened .I think though that if a guy asks a girl out to dinner that is not reason enough to kill him nor does saying someone is cute

Why would you not treat the gay man who asked you out the way you expect a disinterested girl to refuse you. Why is he so different for you?

i haven't heard about it either... it took me time to understand the case... certainly, nothing whatsoever can ever be a good reason to kill someone... and, the case you have mentioned is simply unbelievable... especially when you have mouth to speak... i don't think the two young men really killed Matthew Shepard out of fright, rather it was there killer instinct...
