Does windows 7 use more ram than vista?

Hi friends, I have seen one of my friend installing both windows 7 and vista. He is having 1 GB of ram. When vista ultimate was installed, it used about 55% of ram and when windows 7 was installed, it used 70% of ram. Why is this so?

There maybe two reasons.First,maybe on windows 7 some applications occupied some ram use while on vista the applications used less. Second, i assume that your 1 GB ram is not enough for running windows 7. 2 GB ram is recommended.
