Beauty contest, must or a waste?

What do you have to say about beauty contests conducted every year all around the world?Is there really, a die -hard need to have such contests, spending so much of money.I personally feel that a crown on your head,or a certificate, isn't what needed for you to believe how wonderful and special you are,infact the word beautiful doesn't mean your physical appearence alone, it's far more broader than what's portrayed on the stage.And you don't need a tag to work for charities.That's my opinion, what do you have to say?
