Third World Country Poverty

I've traveled to Guatemala and lived there for seven years. Every time I come back to the USA, I feel shocked at so much that the American people have. I mean in Guatemala people struggle to get the bare necessities and here I see people throw away huge amounts of food, clothes, and all kinds of stuff that would really help some people out. It just makes me sick. What do you feel about third world poverty? Shouldn't we try to help? Have you ever been to a third world country?

hello loves2read,
i don't know about other Third World countries. but as for mine, i could say, most either got pretty lazy or the people in power got corrupted, or both. i really doubt the American people are wasting here and there because they also had been giving out helped towards other countries like my own even though our situation isn't that bad from the others

I sort of agree on this one because instead of learning how to fend for themselves or being independent you teach them dependence (hand to mouth existence).

I am from a third world country. We struggle with our daily lives. In a way, many countries like the US, EU, Japan and other developed countries help alleviate poverty, by not just providing money (which personally does not help them in any way) but by funnelling support through agencies such as USAID, World Vision etc., providing not just seed money to help them have small businesses but also livelihood trainings. There are stories here that some women from Payatas produced custom jewelry that is sold in posh shops in the UK through a kind British lady who have set up a livelihood center.
Some donate food (like what happened here with Typhoon Ondoy and Peping), clothes, etc and provide used computers or books normally thrown out and donating them to schools.
It would depend on donors like yourslef what would benefit the community in poverty alleviation.

these are all true and i don't think first develop countries are deaf in the situation of the third world. despite of the financial cris going there, some are still nice enough to donate of what they have

I really love traveling to different countries. I see traveling to and spending money in poor countries a way of bringing money into those places. I like to stay in locally owned accommodation, catch local transport and buy from local shops. Doing that helps the local people to get money. I have been to many poor countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Guatemala and the Maldives. Whilst the rich live it up on posh islands some of the local people in the Maldives live on less than one dollar a day.

America does help, thank you very much. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not being done. We're the most generous nation in the world when it comes to helping out the third-world countries, and it's a bit ridiculous to put us on a guilt trip when there's no reason to.
